Being able to change your own motorcycle tires gives you a lot of freedom and will save you a lot of cash. This is how I've been mounting and balancing my own motorcycle tires since 2007 or so.

Small suggestion: Don't remove the wheel weights on the static balancer until you are sure you need to... Sometimes the tires are pretty close in balance especially if you use the same brand and model tire. The Dunlop race tire vendor taught me that. He put the wheel on the balancer after a set of new slicks and it didn't need any new weights. When I asked him about that he said "We're balancing your wheel, not the tire. These tires are pretty much identical." He was right.

@@andyruhl7739 The amount of customers who pay for a balance on their car and get angry when every tire doesn't have new weights visible.... "Sir, you paid us to balance your tires, 2 were perfectly fine, one only needed a clip on weight on the inside edge so you can't see it and the last one balanced out perfectly after removing the weights"

@@CanyonChasers I always balance my wheels, the tires are so close now, the wheel is a little off, paint, powder coat all we are dealing with are a few grams of weight most of the time. Just mount the tire correctly.

That was common practice where I worked. Saves times and the customer money. Leave weights on and after tyre change put on a balancer and look if balance changed. I have maybe re balanced ever 10th set of tyre max. On some bikes I stopped balancing completely because it was unnecessary. I had a customer with carbon wheels for his Multistrada which I didn't even balance at all. He said he couldn't feel a difference...

Great video. I learned by changing car tires in the yard with two tire tools! Ran the front tire of the car up on the sidewall to break the bead, pryed the bead off and then hammered off the rear bead! Your explanation of the "bead well" was worth watching again! Well done!

I need to comment again - I have the no mar - and this video is by far the best video on using their tool. I wish I has seen this video 2 years ago.... I've figure out a lot of this but this video would have saved me hours of frustration. I'm saving it to my favorites and will watch this again before my next tire change.

Another great video. I have a No-Mar cycle hill model it’s been great .I like to take a bit of extra time and put the rim without the tire on the balancer I have been surprised at the fact that the stem is not always the heaviest part. Thanks again

My No-Mar has more than paid for itself. Having 3 motorcycles and a constant need to change tires on one or more bike at a time and at an average cost of $25 (Off bike) per wheel, I think I got my ROI in less than 3 years. To add to that, now all my riding buddies come to me for tire changes, they often will pay me cash and in some instances, a case of beer! Win-Win for everyone. Some have even buy replacement parts or wheel weights for me.

My No-Mar is a little older, the bead breaker is at the base, and the wheel clamps are different. Oh, and it's orange-- a basic model. The No-Mar people are great to deal with, too ( no question goes unanswered, and they have great videos on their site. All of the wear parts are available and cheap enough to keep spares. There are updates to modernize my machine, and I might get them this winter. Before I got old and slow I took my tire machine to the track using N0-Mar's special portable mount, it's long enough and strong enough to park a car tire (with car still attached) on and provide a very sturdy and secure tire changer. (Also, ka-ching!!! $$$) In a way I never planned on my No-Mar has paid for itself. AND mounting and balancing your own tires is the best way to spot a less than ideal tire that the shop might let go out the door. And I do everything myself, I run a small retirement project restoration shop. As usual, great job!

FYI of all the tires I’ve mounted I have only found one that the heavy part of the rim was the valve stem. I put my wheels on the balancer and with a punch mark the heavy spot always put you’re dot to that spot and you will use les weight. Great video!,

Whoa! Dude. You so nailed this video. Well done. I've got a No-Mar and because the intervals of changing tires on the bikes is long enough apart I always jump on YourTube and check a few technique vids to refresh the procedures. Well, yours is new since the last change, and I've enjoyed a lot of your other content, so I fired it up. So helpful. The company could use yours instead of theirs for demos.

Great video, I have been changing car and motorcycle tires for at least 50 years ! With a new tire, I also replace rim strips on spoke wheels, along with new wheel weights, and also replace valve stems, customers are not stupid they can see what has or have not been replaced. Always replace all of these items, nothing worse than doing the job twice because a weight fly's off, or an old valve stem starts to leak later. again great video, you were taught the correct way, or you learned on your own, no short cuts !

Good Job on the video. I have the No-Mar classic model, but a few years newer than yours. While soapy water does work, recommend actual tire lube is used. No-Mar, and others, have a paste type that works great. Your demo tire appears pretty soft and easy to do. With stiffer tires the yellow thing wants to slip back while levering the top bead - a 3/4" block of wood jammed in behind keeps the yellow thing in place. Also the rim wants to turn while levering. I use a tie down strap around a spoke, tied back to the changer, to keep the rim from rotating. For single sided swing arm tires with a large hub ID, you need a spacer between the drop center bar and the hub ID, so the drop bar doesn't get bent. I made a wooden one on my wood lathe.

The lightest point is mostly less than 5 gramms lighter. Thats why some of the manufactors (like Michelin) stopped with this dot. Its back from a time when tyres aren't made that precisely as nowadays. Anyway, again a nice video.... :-)

Yeah. I've noticed the weight almost always goes on the wheel in nearly the exact same spot. I'm pretty sure I'm balancing the wheel, not necessarily the tire.

Great video. Thanks. If you can weld and do simple fabrication anyone with a DIY attitude can make this machine. My dad and I did exactly that 2 years ago and we already saved $200 in tire mounting fees. Total cost of the build was about $125.

Excellent video. I still do the floor method, but my knees don't care for it anymore. That machine looks much easier than busting my knuckles with spoons. I will have to give it a look and either fab it or buy one.

Great video and after what happened today will start doing my own tire changes. My local shop who I’ve supported for years basically yelled at me for bringing my own tires in to have changed. I wasn’t aware the margins on tire sales were higher than labour. Anyway I won’t stop supporting my local shop cause everyone can have a bad day but it was super unprofessional.

Ugh. That sucks. Margins on tires are super thin. It's basically a loss-leader. They make their money on mount/balance/etc. But a busy shop should appreciate bringing in the wheels. It free's them up to change more tires. But I like to be self sufficient, clean everything, be picky, take my time. Nobody cares becaus it's just doing my thing.

i Have 4 motorcycles so i bought a pneumatic tire changer. for about $850 worth every penny it has paid for itself. in our area if you bring a wheel into the shop and if you buy the new tire from them its $50. more if you you bring both tire & wheel in. If on the bike around a $100 per wheel. they rob you in our area. Because they can

Great video...I have a similar older No-Mar but only use it about 1x/yr so your video is a great refresher. My only problem is mine is bolted to a small sheet of plywood so i can move and store it more easily but it doesn't work well if i'm mounting tires alone.

I do my own as well. This also gives you a chance to clean and maintain that part of the bike while the tire is off. Shops don't do that.

Btw, mounting tires with tubes is allmost the same. Just give the tube some little air (wouldnt call it pressure), place it, fix the valve stem loosly with the nut and double check the tube not to be between when pushing the bead into the rim. Before giving pressure make shure the valve stem is aligned straight. If not, pull gently on the tire to slip it over the rim. Thus align the tube plus its valve stem. Mounting offroad tires with a rim lock is a bit harder, but there are many howtos out there.

I've always changed my own tires since I've owned motorcycles (1967) until recently, I'm getting old (almost 70) and a little lazy. I've never owned a tire changer, I place mine wheel on two large blocks of wood so I don't mar the wheels. I use a plastic bead breaker, and plastic rim protectors when I spoon the tire of and on to protect my wheels. I once had a 2002 Suzuki 1500cc Intruder that we put 87,300 miles on. Sometimes I changed tires three time in one Summer. I got so good at it I could jack the bike up remove both wheels change both tires, pump then up and remount both wheels all within one hour. The tires were tubeless and the bike was shaft drive which makes things a lot easier. Like I said before, I'm getting old and lazy. The last few times (3) I needed tires I paid some else to do it for me.

Yeah, I did that too for a while, but on those hot summer days, with sweat just pouring into my eyes... I just couldn't take it any longer. Ha ha. I guess I got a little lazy too! BTW, I also had an Intruder 1400 for a while. Put a lot of miles on it, actually.

My K1200S needs ties almost every oil change. Since 2005 my Nomar has paid for itself as well. I am getting old too. Last month I replaced one tire and had a shop do the rear. My other bike needs rubber soon, maybe I'll do it.

I just did get a new rabaconda street tire changer and love it. Gp racing does static balancing just like this. If it is good enough for them then good enough for us. They have a pretty big budget and would have fancier balancers.

I changed my own tires this past summer. Saving a "few dollars" is always a good thing but, I enjoy working on my bike if I have the ability to do it. I only have the one motorcycle so I might change tires every year or two. Investing in the tire changer like you have may not "make sense" for someone like me. I used zip ties, soapy water and some elbow grease and found it to be easier than I expected, but still a lot of work. I will admit, having equipment like that sure would make tire changes a whole lot easier. I also static balanced my own tires with a good quality balancer. Working in a machine shop the past 36 years I static balance some of the grinding wheels/hubs I use and find that to be very straightforward. I am very curious what your thoughts/experiences are on checking the balance on your rims before putting a tire on??? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for the great content and keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤️🏍 Randy

NoMar used to have a model one step above the Classic. I bought one of them while they had a sale where some extras were included at no added charge. Soon after the Classic was upgraded to replace my Jr. Pro. Anyway, same story, it works great, but the NoMar tire bar can not handle my Gold Wing rear tire, so I use a MoJo Lever for that.

I also change my own tires, i use a Max2H tire changer. It's much more portable than the nomar, and was actually cheaper for me (not in the US). Huge advantage is that it doesn't take any storage space, and that i can take it to the track and change tires on site if i want to. It also doesn't have any metal touching the rims.

I have this one and wasn't happy with the extra pieces you need for bikes that aren't big bikes. It also wasn't very easy to use on street tires, to the point where I bent the center rod...I got my money's worth changing track tires often, but for a couple hundred more, I can buy an actual tire changing machine now.

I started using glass beads for balancing my tires instead of external weights. I was always getting a shake in my bars a few thousand miles after changing tires. When the tires were new it was fine. They have worked great for me! Someday I may brake down and buy that Numar set up. That looks sweet! Great video. Do one with tubes, on narrow rims though. They’re not quite as easy as those wide rims.

Glass beads/balancing beads don't work all that well at all if you change speed and direction frequently. And yeah, narrow stiff tires are tubes are miserable. Same thing with little 10" scooter wheels. Ugh.

Great video! Something I started doing years ago, was use windex instead, even cheap walmart brand, because most dish soaps have petroleum fighting agents that will slowly eat the rubber. You might not have enough dish soap in the mix to cause issues, but I found out years ago some of my tires that sat on the bike for much longer were being broke down or deteriorating at the bead much faster. I imagine if you change your tires out frequent enough it might not be an issue. Also how about changing out those Supercorsa's? With the SC1 and SC2, in the summer if I let them sit out in the sun a while to get nice and warm, I hold my tongue just right, I can sometimes put them all the way back on the rim without any spoons. And taking them off warm is so much easier :)

This is a great point. It's rare a tire lasts me six months, so I never considered that. But if you had a vintage bike or something that doesn't see a lot of miles, that would be concerning. And yeah, those SC1/2's are kinda like cheating. They are so gooey, especially when warm, while a Bridgestone touring tire will have me cursing like sailer.

I have a spare rim with a new rear tire mounted. This way, if I want to go on a tour, I have a new tire to start out and a spare to come back to. I have lost track of the tires I have changed and haven't balanced one of them. Haven't had a balance problem yet.

I just installed new Michelin tires on my bike (done by others-pro motor shop).Tires are balanced very well, but soon I will have to change the brakes.(both rear and front-rotors + pads). Question is: after brake works is done, do I have to re-balanced my tires? Thank you in advance.Des

One thing I found thru time - placing the tire dot at the stem is a 'no no' IF you're not running a tube in the tire. Always best to ck the wheel itself - put it on the balancer - mark the heavy spot - put the tire dot where that is. Normally less weights would b now used once final balanced with tire mounted. I bought a Coats 220 tire machine from a guy closing down his shop. Best investment ever, as I buy, fix, and sell bikes on a regular basis. When he showed me how to use it, very similar to your video, he gave me a word of caution to never inflate a tire (set the bead) with the tire laying on the changing stand or flat on the ground. He said to rest it up on an angle against the machine or to inflate it standing upright on the ground. He said this holds true whenever inflating a tire, nothing particular to changing machines, as he said the wheel could jump up and hit you if the bead sets in a violent way. Ever heard of this guidance?

I hadn't heard of that. But it makes a certain amount of sense, and it seems like a small concession to make in order to prevent damage. I'll probably do it this way from now on, honestly.

i have the NoMar cycle hill tire changer. after losing access to my bike shop which did it for nothing, and a bit of research i decided to go with NoMar. i also talked 10 buddys into buying into a service agreement so the tire changer was 1/10th the price for me. in my opinion, it does not work like any of the videos. it is certainly not a one person job. i am not sure what kind of tire that you had, but a stock Harley tire does not flex enough to push down and hold in the drop zone while pulling the lever by yourself. we have found this is always a 2 man job. having said that, when a tire needs changed, the text goes out for a garage get together and beers happen, so it has never been a problem. i would say that in the 7 years or so, we have done about 50 tires. we have the process down now, but most of the time, we find it a lot easier to use the NoMAr tire irons to pull the tire on. the way you did it has worked on occasion, but as a rule, it just frustrates us. still glad we bought it, and have certainly gotten our monies worth. after that, we used counteract balancing beads. good video, easy to follow your process

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU GOT THE WHEEL CONE FOR BALANCING A DUC SINGLE SIDED SWING ARM WHEEL? Ducati SSA wheels have ~ a 43mm axle mount opening vs a double sided swing arm wheel. I’ve seen people use tape or jury rigged pvc but yours looks precise. Thanks.

Great video, as always! How is it mounted to the floor? I used to change my own tires back in my road racing days but the poorly designed harbor freight tire machine scratched up every wheel it contacted. I really like that machine.

This is a great video! Can you recommend a setup that doesn't require bolting it to the floor? Unfortunately, I'm a renter and that's not really an option.

I've seen guys bolt them to a plate of metal and they have one that slides into the trailer hitch that a lot of guys use at the track.

Sure beats what I do with spoons and my goldwing tires on the garage floor. Every time I end up cursing those super stiff tires and add some new scratches

I mount the new tire with zip ties and no lube because the tire basically falls on the rim. Then i can check balance and move the tire on the wheeI for the least balancing weight needed before removing the tie wraps. I would not use any type of corrosive soap for lube that may get inside or between bead/wheel causing corrosion. Windex if anything because it evaporates quick.

You can also use windex as your lube. It will evaporate quicker than soapy water.

Excellent video, but how many tyres should i have to change to pay off for the whole set up? I own just my personal bike and tyres last me at least 3 years. Personally it works out better for me to pay someone else to do it. However, as usual, I learned something new from you today. 👍
