An excellent video that sums up the playstyle of these ships in the meta perfectly. I'd like to add, that one more reason to stay close to allies is that smart CV players, when they go hunting DDs, will use the surface detected indicator to narrow down your location to just few square kilometers. It has also been my observation while watching people, and playing CV, that the two most common mistakes are, in order, bad/stingy smokes, and not smoking early enough. Ideally, you dont want to ever even be spotted, or better CV players can and will land attacks on you, especially with dive bombers. Also, sometimes it's right to be just inside of radar range in shorter ranged torpboats and gunboats, where you can easily escape, to positively bait out radar and give you a window for smoke play or torping, or even capping. I know you probably know this but, many players dont seem to. Assashio and Somers are tied with Benson as my favorite dds, and I have never understood all the complaint over thier AA. I love their asymmetric style of play. The only time AA matters is for shooting down the fighter squad they dropped on you, and most CV players struggle to land hits on you if you sail into the planes on each attack run if your Aa is off because they dont start the run early enough, or cut it too short in the turn. Love the content, and especially love seeing you play more DDs.

Thanks for this, radar is usually avoidable. I think many players need to dip into clan battles even just casually where you quickly understand that you can bait radar use and maximize ranges.

That point where you said you had the gunfight with shima because you feel like you're better might sound cocky/overconfident but I find it's a great mentality in dds providing you can aim that dds guns well. The dd who lands first hits often wins unless there is some significant reason like hp diffence/majorly outgunned etc. I'm still grinding the shima line (think it's my forth dd line now) but in my kagero I gunned down many dds including a few akizukis and even a kitakaze because I was willing to fire first and had better aim/dodging - of course I lost those trades at times, but I won them far more often than I would have expected, yugamo has been the same. Not that shima line /torp boats in general should just be gunboating, but when they do they need the confidence to shoot first and take the lead early (and have a disengage method like an island) to stand a chance.

Great tutorial for *ALL* torp boats. Main torp boats like pretty much the entire japanese classic line (not alt-line as in akizuki, kitakaze, harugomo) or something like a Kleber "stealth build" That's how it's done. Much respecto senpaio

Played the Kidd in ranked for the captain. Full AA build. I usually stick with BBs to help keeping them alive and then planes start to pile up on the sea floor (even against Enterprise). You can't do that with a Shima, ofc and you can't do it against a T10 CV but I'm pretty successful with that. DDs are fun to play and as you always tell us: decisions matter. Great video 👍🏻

Good stuff, man. I complained a little about the DD vids, but it's great as long as you don't over generalize.

"You only did well because such and such didn't focus you." The point of the video is to play in such a manner that mitigates, if not neutralizes, these threats. It's just good DD mindset in general. Also I highly recommend getting the engine boost module if you can spare the coal. Being faster for longer is better, and there's not much competition for the 2nd slot.

This is excellent. It took me some time to pick these things up myself... and my game improved tremendously. I do however feel my heart break every time I have to use my smoke to avoid CV planes. :( Especially in the Gearing coz then the smoke is not available for a long time.

I love to play with the concealement of her, use the smoke often for teammates. You can play with the CV, as your airdetection is only 2.5km. Turn AA on as he attacks, than turn it back off at the 2.5 mark. Do some maneuvering. Frustrated many CVs with that :D (Became a purple Shimaplayer after CV rework^^)

Great video, btw can you make a video "how to play cruiser in a uptier bb" ? I would like there is 2 match, a openwater and a camping island, i want to grind up my hipper but nowadays i just always meet tier10 bb and get slap easily..

Let's be fair though. 1.) Shima players shouldn't ever complain about being outgunned, its not a gun boat. 2.) Like 95% of all successful you-tube-vids in a DD has NO CV. 3.) Some CV players are new or bad.. 4.) Everyone can have a good game, I too have had a very good game in a shima in a war with radar and a CV, what people complain about is that there are soooooooooooooooooo many odds against a shima in that scenario that luck is 95% of your success, 5% is skill. We want wars where focus and skill can give you a much better chance.

I've had good games like that: spotting for your team, dealing a lot of damage and caring not to rush to cap because of radar cruisers, ending first place of the team, but getting reported by guys that think you HAVE to cap because you are a DD, regardless of radars. Those games make me mad.

I don't think PQ has to prove anything to anyone, he's clearly an excellent player (far above my level, just to be clear). Having said that, I don't find this game very impressive. PQ had very little to show for this cautious approach until about 9 minutes in. He did very well in the second half, but I've been in plenty of games where if I waited this long to have an impact (especially if I travelled from one flank to the other as he did) the enemy would surround us and squeeze us into the spawn, turning it into a rolfstomp. It's a lot of damage to retreating BBs, which is nice, but I get the impression that the game was decided elsewhere. Cheers :)

Just how I play my Shima. Love my DDs Kleber the best by far in my personal opinion. But also in my Shima I always have one torp set on my ship and only use two sets, one I always hold back just in case I need it ASAP. Just keep myself safer.

Great strategic advice. This still wont help in a very common scenario where your teammates are absolute garbage and get killed within minutes of the match starting. In matches where I have faced radar cruisers like Des Moine and Petro, they have 100% used their radar on me when I was within 10.5 - 12km away from them. You got lucky, good luck against an ultra pro bro cruiser player. They will delete a destroyer in seconds. You had very competent teammates in this match which doesn’t happen often when playing randoms anymore unless you are on the team doing the steam rolling. A lot of the big WOWs streamers will post their best matches on RU-vid but when you actually watch their streams it is steam roll match after steam roll match where one side is almost always overpowered. The lack of skill based matchmaking is what is killing this game and why they only have 600 - 1000 people watching their big final tournaments.

tell me, how would you play smoke Mino in ocean map? I got it twice so far and I am triggered because the DDs outspot me, and whenever I smoke to disengage I get flanked. I can also just sit in the back line but because of the meta all the bbs are in the back and to get anything in range I have to broach the dd line.... cvs are also a problem because when I try to disengage on any openwater map area they always screw me over.... especially when I am on low health waiting for my heal

Your videos really make me want to play again but I missed the 10.0 free respecs, so my builds are a disaster. I'm stuck with Outnumbered Zao and all kinds of bullshit that won't really work. Is there any more respecs I should know to be around for? I need out of this mess

If you are one flank as a only dd and the enemy CV keeps coming to my flank to hunt me, do I just abandon that flank and assist the otherside? I really can't make up my mine in those situations. If I go the other flank my side would definitely crumble, if I stay the enemy Cv keeps spotting me.

If you play without preventive maintenance on EU, you will end up without torps on second he shell rocket that hits you. Also on EU there is muuuuch more CVs that are willing to throw planes to kill torp boats

This is why I don't have much sympathy for DD players who INSIST to move only towards the enemy, without playing smart. Yeah CVs need work, but DDs need to play smarter when there's CVs. Sorry you can't drive around the enemy.

In that game, the carrier was never on you. I am a carrier player and I always focus on the dds. Dds always win games at the end, so hunting dds is always a priority.

Meh, you didn't convince me at all ;) You've seen for instance, that CV attacked Wooster without any hesitation, so you're overestimating the "fear of AA". Midway just didn't want to look for you. You could be blapped by any BB (or a cruiser ofcoz) with this low HP you had. Sure, being smart helps, but it is nowhere near of equalizing unbalance WeeGee created in this game. And quite before the end the T10 CV managed to die (rare thing, most often they are the last to be found), so instead of being permaspotted for Halland/Monty or just killed by rocket planes, you could actually play the game... So naah. I will still whine about unfair life :]

The ships make the game sure PQ but the players using them do as well, and you show here that the other players just weren't as advanced as you are. Just like how you judge the game and it's balance based on your skill and others at said skill level. Most people saying "oh do that in a shima vs etc" are obviously just lacking in skill and experience. But it can't be denied that these enemy ships weren't high skill. It's pretty undeniable that this won't work on players of skill equal to you or players equal to the skill of the complainers. You tend to post unicorn matches where you get these dangerous enemy ships but somehow forget that there are players controlling those ships. Kinda like how the thunderer is a broken ship that can and will get an easy 200k a game but most players probably get 100k. Not saying you didn't make your point to people that complain but they won't accept it for the reasons I just gave. They see the game from their skill perspective and not yours, there's really no point in trying to respond to it because for the most part they won't accept it.

I don't see any significant skill in this video man, if you're gonna start baiting us with false titles and extreme exaggerations then i guess i don't belong here. Any 50-55 percent win-rate dd here would have done the same play here, and I know you should be better than that, so save the outplayed and heavy words like that for a video that actually hold some weight. You had the same behavior in the vermont video where FDR kept dropping you bow in and you put FDR vs Vermont. You gave some good advice for beginners sure but thats not what u advertise in the title, thankfully some other youtubers don't exaggerate. Well I'll just leave if this keeps happening.
