I'm never going to do anything even close to fastpacking, but I find your video very interesting! Always nice to hear someone with hands on experience talk about how to travel light in the mountains, and why they pick the gear they do. And it's very satisfying to see worn and dirty hiking gear! Then you know it's been used and abused, and the owner knows her/his equipment in and out. Already looking forward to your next video! Greetings from Norway :-)
Damn, this is inspirational! Too many years ago I was an arctic ranger and did trips like this with friends a couple of years afterwards. Then came college, kids and work… And now I find that fastpacking is a thing! I have binged your videos since I found your channel a couple of days ago. This weekend I’ll get in touch with some former colleagues and see what their plans are. Thanks a lot! 🙏🏻 Am looking forward to more!
Hi Jenny, so glad to see you hitting the trails again! Thank you for sharing this video with the kit details, I've been looking forward to it. You keep on being a badass inspiration, keep on rocking! 💪🏻
@@JennyTough_ did you shoot more video for future posting on your recent rockies trip? I hope so. I had to smile couple of times on your camera shots like the waterfall filling your cup. all the best to you always
Hi Jenny. Thanks for this amazing vid. I got a selfish request. Would you be able to list down the gears individually and if’s not that much, links to where you got them? Thanks in advanced! Stay safe and healthy!
You absolutely know you're stuff, love the kit setup and really impressed that you can fastpack for 23 days with just a 30L in the mountains. I'm really knew to fastpacking but can't wait to get started, fortunately I'm in the UK and will only be facing lows of around 6'c. Done a 1 nighter with a 10L pack but waiting for my 25L pack to arrive so I can do a multiday trip
As always a great insight to what works. Maybe a sign of advancing years or advanced learning but my wee stove is going on more and more adventures ~ something very comforting about fresh summit brews.
Was thinking of commenting on your recent bike packing video to request this exact topic!! So glad you've posted this as I did my first wild camp over weekend and have the same montane backpack which was bursting full! Any idea how much your pack weighed? Love your content Jenny. Really inspires me! 🏕🏃♀️⛰
Thanks so much! Glad to hear you made your first trip :). I don't ever weigh my packs because I don't want to be depressed thinking about it 😂 . Thanks for your kind comment!
Great video! As a road marathoner for the past 5 years, I've only just begun doing trail runs on easy days - I recently posted a virtual run through the woods - so much fun! Your post is very inspirational. As a fellow RU-vidr, I love sharing my experiences and knowledge as well. I know how much goes into these videos! Keep posting - I just subscribed!
Jenny - thanks for sharing. It's always a treat seeing a kit that's been put through its paces. I really appreciated the comments about considering the stove a safety item, it's a perspective I hadn't considered before. You mentioned bear bag hangs - have you tried the PCT style? I fairly recently learned about it and was surprised to see that there could be innovations in hanging food from a tree.
Good editing. Bloody knee kinda stayed with me too long. It amazes me how folk find such amazing gear. Who knew you could get a cold weather sleeping bag that works when wet and folds down to the size of a wet wipe? We'll done on surviving the Rockys, I thought a bear was going to eat you...you're probably too fast for them.
What is the brand of your sleeping bag please? If I were to make a recommendation, I would include a 3 oz. Cuben fiber tarp to your kit. Very versatile piece that can be used to be less claustrophobic in your Bivy as well as a nice cover for your fastpack, poncho for you or ground cloth for a quick nap. In the Sierras, I also carry a small pencil sharpener to make shavings for campfires as well as to make stakes from sticks for my tarp. Hope this helps.
Jenny can you give a recommendation on the brands/models of sleeping bags and bivy that you used? As a relatively thin fastpacker/ultrarunner (male), I'm looking for something just like what you've packed for this trip. Thanks!!
Thanks Jenny, I came across this video researching the Montane Trailblazer 30. Looks like a great fastpack option and I love your adventures. Just wondering if you had any input into the design and when might a version 2 of the pack come out. I can see there is some wear and tear on some of the mesh pocket on the side and the top lid does not look too water resistant. I appreciate your advice. Cheers from California!
Hey Darren! Thanks so much :). I do testing on the pack and feedback to the designer at Montane. I believe the upcoming version will be women's specific, but not much is changing! I did indeed wear out my mesh pockets, but that was mostly due to an incident in NZ when I had to drop my pack when I got stuck on a scramble. I think my bag has nearly 2000km on it now so I'm pretty happy!
Thank you very much for your information. What was the food you dehydrated? What was your mileage per day in the Rockys? Your adventures inside me. Thank you😃
Thanks for a great video. I am really keen to go this way and get away from the heavy 15+kg pack walks. I am keen to do lots of Fastpacking trips here in NZ. Can I ask your view on the Montane trailblazer vs something like the Ultimate Direction Fastpack 30L? Thanks for the inspiration to make the move to lightweight hiking 🙂 Cheers Bryan Wellignton NZ
Did you do the Atlas mountains solo? My dream is to fast pack the Urals. Have you been there? Your pace is unbelievable. I was light Infantry, did a lot of marching in mountains, deserts etc but something like this would have destroyed most of the Grunts I served with.
Excellent break down! I have this pack coming and I'm excited to put it to use here in Newfoundland on the East Coast Trail! Does the be free filter and flask fit in the front strap pocket 🤔 All the best stay safe 🙏
Dear Jenny, thanks a lot for your video! Greatings from Germany 🙂 Could you please tell me the name/ brand of your sleeping mattress? I have never seen such a light version before. Thank you 😀
Great video. What is the make of your waterproof jacket? I am starting to build out a multi-day hiking/bikepacking kit and agree with you that waterproofs are the most important item.
What model pack is that. Do you find the treated down works?. I have some non treated down and was thinking of treating them with Nikwax down proof or something similar. Any recommendations.
Thanks! It's a Montane Trailblazer 30L. I looooove hydrophobic down. I retreated everything with Nikwax before starting this journey and was so glad I did!
Recently discovered your content having stumbled across "Fastpacking" - had no idea there was a name for it! I have a question for you, since you're the seasoned veteran here: I plan to fastpack across GR10 in the Pyrenees and also the Pennine Way. Both trails are roughly 250-260 miles long so I'm looking at 10-14ish days each. I'm happy to take minimal gear so would you say the 30L or the 44L Trailblazer would be more suitable? Of course there's plenty of factors that need to be considered but I'd love to hear your thoughts :) Loving the content!
23 days!? Any issues with your down kit getting wet? Great video topic by the way! There seems to be a lack of fastpacking how-to's and related content on RU-vid.
Thanks so much! No, I keep my down in a dry bag to keep it out. I also use hydrophobic down so it’s no issue if it does get wet! Thanks for your comment :)
Quick question Jenny. I'm considering buying the Montane Trailblazer. I usually take two waterbottles and have them in outer pockets for easy access. You had bladders and a bottle inside the bag. Isn't that a pain stopping to drink all the time? Also you don't use a camelbak set-up? Thanks for the video and advice!
I’ve seen you use that pack in a few of your videos. Is it the same individual bag that has lasted all that time or have you had multiple of the same bag?
You on strava? Would love to see the routes/stats. You don't really seem like you'd be bothered, but i'm sure i'm not the only one... What's the pack weight?
Hi, I have a few questions. How do you finance your trips? Where are you from, as I hear a slight Irish accent? How are the professional pics taken on your Instagram if you are travelling solo? Thanks in advance.
That looks harmful for your joints running with a backpack even a light packed one. Don´t you miss out on the scenery running ? Running downhill how does your feet cope with movement inside the shoe or is that all nothing to worry about ? Tough and brave you are.
Thanks! Well, no it isn't hard on my joints - I keep the weight down, I'm running on trails, and, most importantly, I'm trained for it! I actually started running in order to slow down and take in more (than cycling) and I don't feel like it goes too fast. Not the way I run anyway 😂
