Hey, Matt. I suffer from anxiety and depression. I tend to “forget” about hygiene and keeping my place clean, and clutter-free. Watching your movie Minimalism on Netflix honestly changed my life...for the better. I’ve begun to start decluttering and getting rid of clothes/things/etc. that I don’t need and man has it made my life easier. I watch your videos quite often, and the one with Gary Vee completely opened my eyes. Just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, bro because even tho we don’t know each other, you’ve helped changed and improve my life. Thank you.

My main strategy is to pack ahead of time. I've found packing last minute leads to pressured I-might-need-it thinking which makes me bring too much, so I strive to pack at least the day before. Another strategy is to place all the clothes I think I need to bring on the bed, review and review, switch out things so I can opt to create a few outfits from a minimum number of pieces, and bring only the results. Great video, Matt, and very helpful.

I have travelled quite a bit for work the past 2 years, what it taught me is how little stuff is need in general. I'm able to travel for a week with carry on after much experimentation. What I love is that I've slowly been able to get rid of unnecessary clothes taking up space at home. Makes packing simple when you have a smaller amount of clothes to choose from overall. Keep up the great vids Matt, you're smashing it.

Something I started traveling with that I’ve loved has been switching out my liquid toiletries with solid ones- such as a small bar of shampoo, bar conditioner, and one body/face soap bar. I find it lasts longer than the liquid I can take with me and I typically always have plenty left over for the next trip. I also don’t have to take it out of the bag for security check because they aren’t liquids. Saves some time during security check through.

While I'm not a minimalist, I try to get as close as I can. Packing for travel has become a very enjoyable experience for me :) I remember when I was a kid, my parents would always tell me to get stuff "just in case"... and we ended up carrying around huge, heavy luggages for a 10 days trip. And I MAYBE used 40% of what I brought. 30 years later, I'm happy to bring ONLY what I use, and a carry-on luggage + a backpack is all I need too! It feels SO good :D Light on the shoulders, light in the mind. Cheers!

I'm not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination but I did learn a lot (from youtube) about minimizing when I traveled halfway around the world last year. I traveled for 3 months with only a carry-on bag (an Osprey backpack) and a big purse. I had about a week's worth of clothes that were mix-and-match items to make it look like I had more clothes. After a couple of weeks I was getting tired of my clothes but after the first month I was like, yeah, I kinda like not having to worry about if my clothes look good - I already know they do whichever one I happen to pull out of the backpack that day. I love what you said here about - "I don't care what you think, this is what works for me". I had to remind myself of that for 2 different things - when I packed something that the youtubers were saying not to pack, and when my family insisted I'm going to regret getting a backpack instead of a roller, and not availing of checked-in suitcases. Anyway, there are a few things I would change - I'm still a bit wishy-washy on the backpack vs roller thing because it was really awesome being able to carry my bag everywhere even in non-roller-friendly terrain and not have to worry about the bag getting snatched when I'm not looking. But yeah, after a while it does get to be a hassle to strap in and out of the bag and there are days when I just didn't want to carry the thing. I can also relate to your "extra undies" thing. Especially being a woman who does sometimes get caught with "the flow" unprepared. It's just better to just throw the thing out instead of carrying the thing around until I get a chance to do laundry. Eeek.

Actually, learning to pack carry on only is what got me interested in minimalism! I used to be a chronic just-in-case overpacker but now I encourage everyone to only carry on. I try to do this on road trips as well. My wardrobe is pretty simple and is comprised if mostly black and white, so that makes it easy to make decisions about what to wear, though I am intrigued by the idea of a uniform, like you wear. (PS I love it that you mentioned your six siblings - I’ve got 7 kids myself and with 2 - almost 3 - grown up, and the best times are when we are all home together!) Also, two bags are hardly excessive, especially given the amount of camera gear you are able to fit in such a small, orderly space. Like you said, minimalism has to work for you and I’m learning to apply it to my life incrementally, though not every aspect of my life has been affected by it. I’m not sure if it ever will.

I moved to Spain about a year and a half ago and since then, I've been using the eBags Weekender to get around. It's big enough to carry my crap and I can sometimes get around checking it on airlines like Ryanair where they're super stingy with space. An extra pair of shoes, a couple pants and a few shirts will usually do it for me. I have the same philosophy on underwear in that I'll always pack one extra. If it's a bike trip, I have an Orucase, which is amazing for if you're a cyclist. Check your bike like a normal bag and generally all of my cycling clothing fits in there as well. Excellent video, Matt. Keep it up!

I can fit everything in it easily no matter how long the trip is, if it is shorter, I can always throw in an extra pair of shoes or a sleeping bag if that is the case. Also, it is waterproof and extremely durable.

I am about to head home from a week long trip and just wanted to say that I found your channel while packing before I left. You inspired me to try to minimize the amount of belongings I travel with, and as I repack my bag I have discovered that I can definitely get away with bringing less on my next adventure.

Packing is definitely a mini exercise in minimalism, I’ve moved and lived in a different city/country four times already, and with each time I had to pack all my belongings into two suitcases and one carry on + backpack. I’m moving again by the end of this year so I’m going to get to challenge my hoarding tendencies again 😅

I went on a backpacking trip with my older brother in Nicaragua. I didn't know how to pack for a trip like that so I brought a small suit case. When my brother handed me a camping backpack that was when I learned to pack minimally. I had to last for 10 days in a foreign country with nothing but what I could fit on my back. It was a great learning experience and now I never travel with anything but carry-on. This saved me when I went to a wedding and the flight company lost my family's luggage I was the only person who showed up to the wedding in a formal outfit!😂

Two bags: one roller with all my clothes and toiletries and shoes and whatnot (I very very rarely travel for less than a week at a time) and then the Tenba 15 DNA Camera bag as my walk around bag. Fantastic camera bag, incredible quality, really really love it.

Marie Kondo is highly overrated. The way she packs and organizes stuff is how my mom told me how to pack and fold clothes when I was just a little shit, almost 50 years ago. In Germany we'd call the Kondo way of organizing just "logical" or "rational" or "generally good housekeeping". Nothing to it.

After much trial and error I've finally reached the stage (since the past 4 years) where I can travel with just a carry on and my small handbag for 2 weeks. Toiletries, clothes, shoes etc! Sometimes I even walk with items I don't use (trying to work on that haha). Thanks for your awesome content. I'm a new sub (since January) and I think you're inspirational. Keep it up!

Most important question when packing :do you have access to Landry where you are traveling to? 2nd is :enough underwear. You bring 1 extra pair, I will bring at least 3 pairs more than I need. Never want to run out of favorites. Also I bring a tiny bottle of liquid laundry soap made for handwashi g silk. This stuff is mild and works with every fabric and I can was clothes anywhere: in a sink and a bucket. It makes me worry a lot less about packing very small when I know I can was clothes

Hi Matt- please don't stop the creation of this content - absolutely incredible and thought provoking stuff. Really enjoying going through your videos lately and getting inspired. One video I would like to see: Could you do a video on your digital accessories i.e phone, Ipad, Macbook, computer etc Intrigued to understand how each of all of these accessories helps towards productivity for you and why have all of those instead of just one or two digital accessories? I noticed in your "how to pack minimalist" video you had an Ipad & macbook - seems to be a lot of devices when the MacBook can do everything the Ipad can...Thanks

Speaking of packing things up, I think the most efficient way of reducing the weight of the luggage is by simply choosing a smaller bag/package so that you can start limiting the stuff you are carrying around. That works for me lately. I used to carry a very big one (70cm x 40cm x 25cm/35cm) and now I carry a way smaller one (50cm x 30cm x 20cm) and still end up with a few things unused in a 2-3 days trip.

I just got my Peak Design 20L a couple days ago and really love it so far, also have a Peak 10L Sling. I used the Aeropress when I traveled for awhile but once I got into Nespresso capsules I stopped using my Aeropress anymore. My Peak 20L gets its first test next week on a road trip to Chicago. I also have the Capture Clip, I would recommend you get one, great product.
