I just finish my first one, am embury 160 my wife wanted it silver. A garbage pick. 5 coats of paint to remove green, silver, white, green, and finally brown. I took it apart for paint removal. I painted most of the parts seperatly. I did put the cap back on the chimny so paint the wouldn't flake off when I bent the tabs back down. I also painted the bottom first and let it dry. Then i set it on a flower pot and painted the rest.

You wanna make one really really shiny? Tractor Supply has a paint branded "Majic". It's a pain in the butt to get right, follow the directions to a tee or it will run or bubble on recoats but OMG it does shine when done right. It comes in spray or cans for mixing for spray gun use and a hardener is available. I just finished a 1952 Bolens Power Ho in Oliver Green and it shines like 3 stage automobile paint.

I have Winged Wheel 350 that I found. I started cleaning it and the paint was chipping. I wire wheeled it and took a lot of the paint off. I spray primed it and hit it with Rust-Oleum gloss and sprayed it quickly to give it a satin finish instead of gloss. I used high heat black and then Rust-Oleum gloss black and used that on the chimney, cap and metal loop along with the ring that hooks onto the globe plate and the burner. The whole thing is drying and in a couple days I will assemble everything. I don't plan on using it a lot but did it more of a show lantern.

If using rustoleum in any humidity let it tack up 10 minutes then shoot it wit a light coat of clear then with in 10 minutes clear it till Shiney. The clear shortens the drying time of the paint you can handle it with in an hour

Looks great Ken ! How does the Krylon do with the heat ? I use VHT engine block enamel on mine, high temp stuff. I clear coated my Kirkman's Champ No.2, and a Feuerhand 276 with it, and even though its high temp, the crowns discolored from the heat. It looks cool though. Reminds me of when guys would spray oil on the chrome sidepipes of an old vette, or cobra. ;)

That's a good looking lantern. I'm a newbie at oil lanterns and looking to buy an old U.S. made Dietz Air Pilot to restore. Do you have any tips for me before I buy one? Does the paint burn very bad when you light painted lanterns? Thanks for sharing your painting system.
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains 4 месяца назад
I use either Krylon or Rustoleum spray paint and they seem to hold up very well with heat and as far as for buying lanterns I usually just try to make sure that they have all their parts. Not that you can’t get replacement parts but they tend to be pretty expensive these days and make sure that the lantern is not rusty though.

@@lotsatrains Thanks. What do you think about the newer Chinese-made Dietz lanterns? Are they any good?

@@lotsatrains Is the metal and glass thinner? I'm on a strict budget and tossing between an old USA Air Pilot on eBay which might need some work (a few rust spots), and a new Chinese Air Pilot on Amazon. Same price. I want something which will be durable, not leak and be dependable for my family in the long run. I've read so many horror stories about the Chinese lanterns, I'm hesitant. I recently bought two new Feuerhand Baby Special 276 lanterns and love those, though they aren't the brightest. I wanted something with a wider wick and liked the Air Pilot... but then there's the apparent quality issues. What's your advice?
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains 4 месяца назад
@@darkhelmetsplane yes the glass globes on the new Chinese Dietz are really thin and I would probably look for something USA made.

Hi, Ken. General question. How do you clean up your lanterns using a scotchguard pad (green)? I have a couple lanterns with light surface rust. I gave them a bath in dish soap and water. Then wiped them down with lubricant. The I lightly sanded them using a dry scotchguard scrubbing pad (green). The results look a lot better but there is still some rust. And I don’t mind it, but should I go any further? Do you have any recommendations?
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains Год назад
I usually wet the pad with wd40 and scrub with it wet then a little wipe with a soft cloth leaving a little wd40 behind to dry on its own also probably will notice the soft cloth picking up the rust residue from the lantern. That’s what I do if the lantern just had minor surface rust but if it’s heavily rusted I use rustoleum gel rust remover.
@jasper60103
@jasper60103 Год назад
@@lotsatrains okay, I’ll probably go over it once more with lubricant on a new scrub pad. It couldn’t hurt. Thanks.

Question. How does these various paints hold up to exposure of Kerosene? Asking because Kerosene is sometimes used as a thinner or paint remover. Will it damage the finish?
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains Год назад
I haven’t had any problems with it so far and amazingly holds up to the heat when burning them too but I only use good name brands like Krylon and Rustoleum.
@jasper60103
@jasper60103 Год назад
Great tips and videos. I like tropical colors and I think that lantern looks great. I own a few older lanterns and now I have some guidance. Also, I was wondering if you painted the underside of the chimney, where it connects to the top of the globe? I didn’t notice, but I guess it wouldn’t matter much. Thanks again for sharing.
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains Год назад
Yes I actually raise it up and try to get some paint under there but it gets a lot of soot from burning it and it’s not going to look too good after a few burns and I think the natural layer of soot offers good protection on its own because I have a lot of older unpainted lanterns and they rarely rust out in that area. I’ve also seen some people completely disassemble that part of the lantern to clean and paint it but I don’t think it’s worth the hassle because you have to bend the chimney to pull it out and risk damaging it so I just clean it the best I can and go for it. 👍
@jasper60103
@jasper60103 Год назад
Thanks again. Also, what type of Krylon spray paint did you use, or recommend? I’ve noticed different formulas, I.e. Krylon Fusion, Krylon Premium, etc. Thanks.

@@jasper60103 I forgot what it’s called but it’s usually the ones with the paint and primer in one I don’t know if it’s a gimmick but it’s ok also use Rustoleum sometimes but be prepared for an extended drying time

I’m curious as to how well this holds up to the heat, I’m also curious as to how well it holds up if you get oil on it during filling and wipe it off once it’s all dried and cured.
@lotsatrains
@lotsatrains Год назад
Hi spray paint actually when done properly holds up very well and the lantern is still pretty much the same condition as it was painted with regular use. This was a common practice with many contractor and utility lanterns as well and also if you ever have decided to strip off a previous paint job on one of these you would realize what you are in for 😂
@operator1192
@operator1192 Год назад
@@lotsatrains thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I just started stripping one today haha. I wasn’t trying to remove paint though, it was all just surface rust but carefully taking the whole thing apart was tricky enough, I couldn’t imagine having to strip it of paint manually, thankfully I’ve got a sandblasting cabinet so I carefully stripped all of the rust off with that and now it has a good base to paint on. I’ve painted a lot of firearms, some with Krylon or Rustoleum, some with Duracoat, and I’ve had some Cerakoted and that by far is the most durable. For a lot of applications the normal off the shelf spray paint holds up just fine even against some heat and plenty of CLP so I guess that’s the route I’m going to go for this refinish. I’m refinishing an old Dietz D-Lite that I found in my great grandfather’s barn that’s definitely seen some use over the years. I want it to be a useable heirloom even though it really isn’t worth anything monetarily.
