Rather than using a mess of different Shades, Layers and varnishes, what if you could paint Stormcast Eternals from the Hammers of Sigmar quickly and easily using just a handful of paints and a single Shade? Agrax Earthshade rides again! READ MORE:
Painting Stormcast can seem pretty daunting on occasion. They're large miniatures! Luckily, this can be an advantage as well as a challenge, and with some very simple techniques you can get a great-looking result on the table in no time at all. With a bit of practice you can get these guys painted up and ready in 30-40 minutes each, and remember that if you're batch painting 3-5 of them at a time that'll cut down total time considerably as well.
How I Paint Things is a series of simple instructional videos designed to help the newcomer through some of the basics and demonstrate how the very simplest techniques can still give you some great results that're easily replicated. Aimed at the beginner to painting miniatures, there might be one or two tips or tricks that help even you old hands!

There's a few other tutorials out there which cut different corners. I'm always super interested by seeing where people choose to make those deliberate 'mistakes' to save time, since it all speaks to someone's own style. What started as a joke about throwing Agrax Earthshade on everything actually turned into a pretty swank Liberator, so I'm not too upset. :D

Thanks bud! I'm trying to keep a pretty broad selection of miniatures on rotation since there's folks of all stripes who swing past this way, but I'll admit my first love is always going to be 40k, too. ;D That being said, I try and make sure there's at least -something- worth knowing in each of these things; I've picked up a lot of great painting tips from the historical gaming community and like to share back and forth across disciplines, in a manner of speaking.

Thanks for this. Super helpful. I slammed through a squad of 5 Liberators tonight. Just highlights and the basing left to do. One thing I tried and was pleased with was using Skavenblight Dinge for the leather bits. Provides just a bit of contrast when you put the Agrax on. Thanks again for the great tutorial. Hey mate, fantastic tutorial video. I absolutely LOVE how you've used agrax earthshade to shade it. I have painted about 20 of these and don't shade them as I don't like reikland fleshdhade, just gives it an ugly orange look to me and takes away from the amazing gold but I'll definitely go back and shade them with agrax. Thanks so much.

@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 5 лет назад
You can start from black without too much trouble. Retributor Armour covers pretty well, so even if you're having to do it by hand, you'll have a nice bright gold basecoat after two or three coats.

@philpants44
@philpants44 4 года назад
if you hadn't already done the rest of the model, and were going to drybrush the armour. what would you have used? would you still have used liberator gold? im a big fan of drybrushing and notice some people use sigmarite. Being on lock down and just getting back into the hobby since before AOS was about, im new to the current paints. how does sigmarite compare to tone with to Auric armour and liberator? Would Auric gold be a nice drybrush over retributor or would it be too subtle? hard to tell using the GW site.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 4 года назад
To drybrush, I'd probably stick with Sigmarite. It's a little brighter than Auric Armour, but you'll need that since you're only applying a very little amount of it. Liberator Gold is a bit more silver, but works better for an edge highlight rather than a straight drybrush.

Did you paint everything in one coat or were there more coats when the camera was off?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 4 года назад
I'm not sure I mentioned the other colours while I was painting them. The Macragge Blue will usually require two coats, but the others were all just a simple one coat over the primer. You may find if you're using Abaddon Black that you will need two coats in some areas, but that's part of why I use the Vallejo Black instead - the finish isn't quite as semi-satin as the GW stuff, but under a varnish you won't see the difference.

Do you know of a good alternative to Retributor Armor rattle cans? They’re about $30 a can here, which is really expensive. Maybe if I had an entire Stormcast army to paint I wouldn’t mind so much, but I’m really only doing the WH Underworlds stuff. And, I just don’t see myself doing a ton of gold armor otherwise.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 5 лет назад
To be honest, pretty much any gold spray will do the job, though I don't know of any specific alternatives. Availability will also depend on where you are! Otherwise you can just do a couple of coats of Retributor Gold from the pot over a black or grey primer and it'll do the job.

@@DaChaosify Tbh, they are quite easy to paint, you can paint the flesh as a pale flesh, or a normal flesh, or like a nurgle decaying flesh, the armor can be green or other colors, to be honest, there is a lot of youtube tutorials how to paint them, and you can use different options to paint them from tutorials :p

Honestly, with most paints you'll find they're pretty forgiving if you don't thin them out 'enough.' Better to err on just a little too thick, since the majority of manufacturers will turn out pretty smooth anyway.

@TeaIngyer
@TeaIngyer 5 лет назад
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I wanna try doing some Stonecast Eternals sometime, buy I was going to go more for an intentionally chalky drydrushed look, with texture paints to create bits of texture. Like Citadel's crackle paints used on the shoulder pads, and the shield, and armagedon dunes lightly used on some select areas, all to help the model really pick up that drybrush. Finish it up with PVA blue mixed with flock to make moss like Black Magic Craft does.
