How I Prevent & Break Through Creative Blocks

****I filmed this video a little while ago and just wanted to clarify something about the language I used: productivity does not measure your worth as a person. It is an ableist mindset to be measuring yourself or anyone else based on their ”productivity”. What I meant to talk about in this video was just how I personally manage my creative blocks - be it art or video. Just wanted to clarify that, as it bothered me a lot that I kept referring to it as productivity, when I’m really just talking about overcoming artist block.
Thank you all so much for watching, ilu ❤❤❤

Thanks to sharing this. I'm a writer of story's...not to publish...just what I like to read. I have ADHD and I'm dyslexic and sometimes my mind is going to fast for me to write. I took ritaline for 8 years and in that periode i wrote a lot...but my heart could't cope the drug animore so I had to stop. So know I don't write anymore... because it is never good enough. And that makes me sad. Hearing you talk about this...I don't know...I want to try again. Some how you always say things that make so much sense. So thank you❤️

I find I get stuck a lot in the “it’s not good enough yet so I won’t do it until it’s good or my idea is just right or I feel like I can do it properly” But I’ve realized that those in between baby steps - of just making something without pressure of whether or not it’s “good” - really does often lead to that place I want to be in of creating something I’m satisfied with Even if I don’t use what I just made - it leads to other things. And I always learn something every time I make something - it’s never wasted! And I promise you, all of your ideas are worth writing ❤️.

You deserve that space in the page It doesn’t need to be “saved” for something “better” Everything you’re doing is enough. This is something that’s helped me a lot with never wanting to “use the good paper” or “start a new sketchbook”. All of your creations are worthy of the time and space that they take up. I promise.

completely aside from the topic itself: yes, "don't break the chain" was seinfeld. & i love that you watch grumps - i remember they read out your name during a stream a while back, and i grinned so big at the realization that one of my favourite yters was watching one of my other favs at the *exact same time* as i was. it was super cool and unexpected

Hey Aaron, I hope this doesn’t offend you in any way. I just love to see you keeping up with your schedule and putting out such interesting and unique content. Like, I got to know you through the podcast and there were times when you were feeling really low and I feel like you’ve come so far, and you’re showing everyone how talented you are. Keep going because you’re doing amazing sweetie 🥰

Totally makes sense. Between ASD and ADHD it seems like a great plan to keep on track. I’m glad later you decided to upload this!

This was so helpful! I'm in an art program in post-secondary right now, and I think that trying to implement this will help me be more productive generally.

I LOVE how eloquent you are. It's a breath of fresh air honestly :) I get that whole productivity block as well, if I watch old videos of myself I usually post them as "funny" or "doped up on allergy meds" because I couldn't sleep and made a bizarre video, just to see what the comments come out like! Sometimes it's fun to see what people think. I've noticed most of my vid comments are "you look tired" and I was actually so TIRED from my allergy meds but couldn't sleep that I got up and made a video lol! It's fun, but also hard to see the real "us" at the same time, what to edit, what not to edit. I tend to leave the whole video intact, eventually I want to post the videos I've made of my cat over the years (he's at LEAST 15 years old by now) and it would be fun to edit it all together into maybe 4 or 5 segments of ongoing love and idiosyncrasies he's developed over the years of me having him =^..^=

I was in a period not long ago where I wasn't arting at all for a while, and earlier this year I had a period where I was doing a lot of creating, which was around october when I did inktober for the first time (didn't finish, got behind a few times, but still, I got to at least day 25). What I realized was that I seem to draw/etc. a lot more often when I have a set thing to draw. If I don't have an idea of what to draw then I usually just end up not drawing. So because I noticed I haven't been creating, a bit less than a month ago I went on pinterest and found a whole bunch of drawing prompt lists and picked out all the prompts I liked best, wrote them down on pieces of paper and made an art prompt jar. I pull a new one out whenever I finish with the last one. That way I don't feel overwhelmed because I won't ever get behind like I do with with daily challenges. And if I feel very inspired then I can do multiple drawings based on a prompt, or I can do one very detailed and time-consuming work. And I made another jar full of things to do art studies of (croquis, eyes, mouths, full portraits, animals, random objects, etc.) for when the prompt I'm working on isn't giving me inspiration. I don't just draw a new prompt, that way I don't get into the habit of not being able to draw something unless I'm inspired. Started on my first prompt about 10 days ago, I'm on my 5th now, and I've done 12 pieces (not big pieces, mind you, but still). I post everything on instagram, including videos of me pulling out each new prompt. (@itskilianmurphy if you want to follow the prompts along with me)

I really liked this video, it gave me a boost of confidence in the fact that even though I'm not "creating" now I am building a foothold for bigger and better things to inspire me.

Aaron you look like you have a Cig above your left ear. 😂 I loved watching you on the Podcast, but solo you are so relaxed & more animated. ❤ Having an established schedule for your uploads is like a the finish line at the end of the week. Having videos filmed ahead of time seems like a good idea to give you some wiggle room. 😊

This is so incredibly helpful to me. Anxiety is definitely my biggest issue with creating art because I feel as if it's just not good enough. I'm slowly working on shaking that feeling because it doesn't matter if it's not good enough! I'm still learning as an artist! As long as it makes me happy it's good enough.

I definitely get what your saying. I didn't create anything for nearly two weeks after my grandpa passed, and now I'm struggling to get back in the flow. Which is a problem, because this is my heckin thesis work and if I don't get it all done, I've failed myself and everyone who has helped me 🙃

Sometimes starting with something small - like just writing ideas - helps to take the baby steps toward creating (which can feel huge) Also! Weird drawing prompts! Taking random letters of the alphabet, assigning them words, then drawing whatever obscure thing they create - things like that REALLY help me get back into the flow of creating!

"We get it, you're Italian." I feel called out. I need tips on how to push through severe exhaustion to still be creative until I get my osa under control. I like the idea of writing ideas down. That could be useful.

Excellent topic 💖💖💖 I once went to a writer's block talk thing for my PhD and was stuck trying to gear it towards neurodiversity the whole time xD also with respect to the don't break the chain thing, with my executive functioning problems I have unrealistic ideas of how long things take and if I sit down to timetable work I will throw EVERYTHING in my plan for the day. So I find building an idea of how long things take eg timing things, and doing things without the pressure to do them at such and such time, is helpful. Example: I've never in my life kept a diary, but now I do in a notebook with no dates in it. The lack of pressure to write every day allows me to work towards a goal like that. Just some tips for you 😊

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I'm so glad you posted this video. I'd never heard of the chain concept, but it makes sense. I've struggled with productivity and creativity the last couple of years. I published 12 books from 2013 to 2016 and then I moved, struggled with anxiety and depression and for the last 2 years it's been so hard to get back into it regularly. I've somewhat managed it over the last several months, but I hit a rut and then it's so hard to figure out where I left off and I get anxious so I put it off longer. What you said is so dead on and inspiring!! Don't break the chain is going to be my new mantra, even if I only do a page or paragraph, so thank you!

i loved this video and i’d definitely love to hear more about being creatively productive while living with ADHD! i don’t know if you’ve ever struggled with this as well, but if you have i’d be pretty pumped to see a video on how to just...stick to a project and see it to completion. my hyperfixations are many and often temporary, and as such i have a thousand unfinished projects lying around :( there are one or two hobbies i’m able to stick with consistently, but that’s all 😞

Aaron thank you so much I have been struggling with my lack of creative productivity for a while now and feeling like I’m not gonna be enough. This helps me feel better. I would love for you to talk more about your struggles with productivity especially when it relates to ADHD and anxiety because I feel like a lot of people don’t talk about hoss things and they just seem super successful and great without any issues ever. It’s nice to see people be real about how they overcome barriers

Uhh I really have that breaking the chain problem... Either studying the polish language or writing stories... Just to sit yourself down to do it again... Uffff that's so difficult for me... But today I started writing again, maybe tomorrow I'll tackle polish :)

This is such a good video! Slightly off topic, as this is more for blocks with specific projects, but I have a habit of going long spans of time without working on my project, and then getting stuck or losing my passion for it so i just... Put it off. I've found that sort of "forcing" myself to just start working, in whatever form and in whatever way, even if it's just doing a couple sketches or a few storyboard panels, really brings back my energy and gets me hyped for it again. I'm sort of just rambling at this point haha, but i just wanna say i loved the video and would be really interested in more of your thoughts on the topic tbh!

Yes, more!! I'm suspecting that I have ADD or ADHD, (but I haven't been to a doctor) and I could really use some techniques for getting stuff done. Like, the biggest thing for me I've realised is not actually the thing itself, but getting started. How do you start things?

Do you hate the term creative process cause you have hard time calling yourself a creative/artist?❤️
@AaronAnsuini
@AaronAnsuini 5 лет назад
It’s just makes me feel like I’m self absorbed or something lol I don’t exactly know yet Something about it (for myself) feels obnoxious? But it might have to do with my experience in fine arts in college - it made me really salty toward artists in general and I internalized a lot of it (I was an angry 18 year old) but it’s getting better!
@nneizmen
@nneizmen 5 лет назад
Aaron Ansuini yh I have a similar pattern about money cause I have internalized hate for rich ppl. And also with arts it’s funny how I believe everyone is an artist but myself. I’m learning to include myself in “everyone” category 🙊❤️
