The structure of the tree looks so beautiful! I am in Zone 7 and just pruned mine a few days ago but made a mistake. I pruned it a little late intentionally to push/extend the flowering period to late fall. Now, it is sweating water out from the pruned parts. Lesson learned, 'when there are already leaves on it, only prune when the ground is dry enough'. Next year, I will just prune it in March before new leaves sprouts.

Thank you for this video. I wanted to order one of these trees, and I saw that there was a vanilla strawberry hydrangea at a local store and now I think I’m going to buy it that and make it into a tree myself. Thank you very much. God bless you. Duane.

Great pruning tips Tracy, I’m in zone 4b and haven’t pruned mine yet, we are still having cold night temps so no swollen buds on them yet. I have a limelight and this is year 3, it’s not a standard and it’s in the middle of my largest flower bed. I haven’t pruned much on it yet so I think this year I should. I will remove all the small spindly branches and shape it. I’m expecting a lot of growth this year. I slo have been saving my coffee grounds to use around the base of all my hydrangeas! Love growing them, I’m hoping they will become as beautiful as yours❣️😊

Love watching how you trim the Panicle hydrangeas. I finally got all mine in the ground and some in pots this spring. It takes time to figure out where you want them. I actually ended up buying 2 Vanilla Strawberry standards about 2 months ago. They are already at least 4-5 years old. They are the only ones that don't have blooms starting to form, so I'm a bit weary. I'm going to let mine get a bit established this year and see how they look before I start pruning away.😅 I really want mine to be more of a tree form so I can plant underneath. Plus, I just like the look of it better. Thank you for sharing Tracy.🤗
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
I agree, let them grow out and prune next year. VS has better fall colors than LL thus a very popular choice for many gardeners. My VS standards also don’t have blooms formed yet but they should be forming soon. I too love tree forms for the same reason…💚 Happy gardening Mary!

This was an excellent video. Super helpful! I think these were regular hydrangea plants and you trimmed them to make a tree? Do you have any videos on how you did that? I have two limelight hydrangeas that will be too big for the area they are planted in. I’d like to try and make them into a tree.

I have a mature Limelight hydrangea that is really getting too big for it's location but I'd rather not try to move it. I pruned it back by about half in early spring but it grew back very quickly and now at blooming time it's already too big again. Do you think it would work to double prune it next year? For example, cut it back by half just after the first leaves appear and then prune again a second time when the new growth is around 12 to 16 inches removing about 8 inches of new growth. Do you think it would branch out again and eventually bloom, maybe a little late, but with more smaller blooms and an overall smaller size?
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
I would just prune the plant much later (i.e. in late spring) to delay the growth and bloom size. All the best. :-)

@TracysHomeGarden

Most of the hydrangeas we have are hardy to zone 3 (panicle and smooth hydrangeas) and zone 4/5 (mophead hydrangeas) so we are fortunate not having to winter protect them.

Quick question. Do you stake your trees? I just received my vanilla strawberry hydrangea tree (so excited). It came staked but the stake is rubbing against the trunk. Edit: I notice that your younger trees are staked. What is the tie you use?
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
Yes, stake young trees for the next few years is a must. Most young trees need a few seasons to get rooted-in in order to support the large canopy. I use a Soft Stretch Plant tie that can be found garden nurseries. I recently had to stake my mature trees as the canopy got too big and was leaning off to one side. Enjoy the beautiful VS tree! www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/planting/ties-and-clips/111020-soft-stretch-plant-tie
