Was surprised to run across this program. I love it and will be watching for more. Do you have any sessions on roses. Most of my roses are ones that have a few blooms at a time all summer and early fall. But, I have one bush that has 50 or so smaller blooms once a year or maybe twice with 15 or so blooms. Would I be more aggressive In trimming the old first blooming back to get a more plentiful second flowering? I love my roses and Cala Lillie’s. I am in southern Alberta Canada and my Lillie’s live through the winter when covered with leaves. I am well into my 70’s and love gardening and it gets my body moving again after winter. Thanks for the gardening lessons.

@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 5 месяцев назад
That's great to hear, obviously trimming them back stimulates plenty of fresh new growth and your beautiful BIG flowers. Keep it up👏👍😁 In time, as the plants get older, there may be a tendency for the plants to become a little "leggy", with all the growth appearing above the 2' level. This is why David is advocating taking some shoots back closer to the ground, so that new shoots are stimulated to break nearer the base to create well-balanced, bushy, full shaped plants. This is something you might like to bear in mind as you prune in subsequent years. Also, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. Many times strangers have asked to harvest some of the dried blooms in the fall to spray paint them. Plants are both 20+ years old now and are a great source of pleasure. As to the Annabelle variety, an old italian lady told me that you can prune during any month with an "R" in it. OctobeR, NovembeR, ApRil, etc. It has always worked well for me. Mine are huge, with 10-12-inch flower heads. These can be invasive, though, if you are not paying attention!
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 года назад
That's a fair and easy way to remember when to prune, however I would suggest that you go easy on pruning it in Septembe"R" because if we get a mild, moist Autumn, it might push up some fresh growth that then is going to suffer when the frosts arrive. Otherwise its not a bad rule of thumb.

We have the cone shaped one and it's right next to the driveway. We moved in during winter and the company renting the house had only been clearing snow out of one side of the driveway so I didn't know it was there until spring. Fast forward to the next winter and I kept hitting its thick branches and cutting off dead flower heads with my shovel every time I lifted it. It was incredibly annoying and frustrating. That following fall, I hacked it down from about 5 or so feet tall to 18 inches or so because I wanted to avoid hitting it while shovelling. The next spring and summer, it came back fuller and much taller. It wasn't my intention but 🤷‍♀️ Guess I did it a favor LOL

Yes, sounds like you (unknowingly) "found the groove". Now, if you revisit this video and take in the detail, you should be able to get even better results! And you might (by redirecting the growth) be able to encourage it leave a little more room along your pathway too. For instance, if you care to watch some of the other videos we have on this channel (on this subject) you will be able to give the stems close by the path, a second trim, so that they will be shorter and bushier and less spreading over the pathway during the summer. And, as you have found out, these plants are very hardy. So, if you wanted, to you could trim back it back annually in late autumn early winter, so that the branches and old flowers do not overhang the pathway! As you've probably heard in this video, David prefers to prune them in early spring, but if you wanted to, you could do it regularly each Fall too. Thanks for watching, if you haven't already, can we suggest that you think about subscribing to our channel, we are posting new videos all the time, and once you are subscribed they will automatically be included in your feed. Also it would be great, if you could kindly click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find the information as well.

When we moved into our new home, I started out shaping by PG hydrangea with a bit of hesitation the first year. It was gaunt looking and sticking out in two directions. From watching instructions on RU-vid, as time went on, I found that I could prune it back 2/3 each year, and shape in into a round bush without doing it any damage. Now, it's a show-stopper in my neighbourhood, with abundant blooms and a beautiful round shape, 8 feet tall. It does get fertilizer sticks in the Spring, but other than a bit of watering, it just gives more love than it gets!

Great information. As a side note...winter of 2021 I was sure I had lost my hydrangeas when I looked out and discovered the rabbits had chewed my branches almost to about 4 to 5 inches high. That's a wise decision. If you want to try to shorten it down a bit and reduce the size, you can begin to do this, just as the flowers are going over. And, if it was our plant, and we wanted to reduce the size, and try to get it to regenerate growth again from near the base, we would suggest you approach it like David did recently when he was pruning a Magnolia in his garden: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n3U4BoLZMn4.html In other words, prune when the flowering is finishing, shorten the top and sides and take out some branches from lower down inside the plant and space this out over a 3 year period.
