Congrats Chichago. I still remember after that Brad comeback, just thinking "this is example #1 to anyone on why you dont just quit because you had an unlucky game/round".
i'm glad you kept going and didn't concede early to brad. putting yourself out there is hard, especially after a rough start, but the comeback must have felt great
I was so happy for you when I saw you qualified for the World Cup. I remember you saying in a practice stream that there was no way you would win the qualis, but I always believed!
Great stuff! Congrats, and enjoy your trip to Stockholm. Just enjoy the tournament, and don't think about any pressure - just play the game in front of you.
LETS GO GAVIN!! (btw Gavin is Chicago Geographer, i can use his first name because we are tight like that. yeah i know top players but its not a big deal to me lol)
I was rooting for you, the tournament being so much more interesting with you in it. A shame Geoguessr did not upload more unseen content from the qualifiers, as the footage must exist. I hope they will change that for the final and not just post one selected match in each stage and Pete's [sic] highlights.
Chicago Geographer • Road to the Geoguessr World Cup If you've seen those type of videos, it would fit perfect. Just music, commentary, and gameplay. Still love the vid!
World cup makes you think grand... the prize pool was 50,000$ not much of a grand event if that was all they can muster. Depending on how many people enter first place is walking away with what like 5k tops? Not exactly something to work that hard to be worlds best for...
So players were INVITED to the qualifiers? That sounds highly corrupt. I am a decent player myself, but since I'm not good at speaking English orally, hence don't have a RU-vid or Twitch channel, I don't get invited?
You’ve got to be more than decent at the game to play in the World Cup. No shade to you but I also consider myself “decent” at the game and know I have zero chance. The World Cup is for the greats only…for a reason.
You need to understand a few things. First off, the tournament will be streamed to 10s of thousands of people, some who have never seen the game before this tourney happens. Sponsors will be watching. It would be catastrophic for their brand if someone, came in and said something offensive, or politically controversial, or did something inappropriate on stream. They needed players that were properly vetted, and the only way to do that, is to stick with players already well known from the plethora of tourneys that have gone on, and with no controversies on them. Second, there is a vast difference from "decent player", and "top 100 player", which everyone in this tourney clearly is. I am also a decent player, even beaten 2 (or more, just two I recall) of the WC players in Duels myself, but am fully aware that if this was an open tourney, I'm not making the final 24..... I'm not even making the final 100... probably. Third, this is Geoguessr. Not the Olympics here. They dont have the budget to run 100s of qualifier tourneys for months straight to get the best players.... yet. They need to work around the reality they live in. Even if the game grows 5Xs what it is now, they are never going to be having large & complex qualifier events. There will ALMOST certainly be more detailed ones than this event had for future iterations. But this was their 1st one, and needed to make decisions on how to streamline the roster options. They also had to make assurances that there would be a wide scope of countries. What if they had run open quallies, and the 24 spots ended up being 21 of them split between 3 countries? Not much of a World Cup. So they worked long & hard to try & have as wide of a field of representation as they could. An open quallie doesnt offer them that. Fourth - What if they ran quallies, and some kid lied to get in..... and showed up to Sweden & wasnt eligible to play? Fifth - You type English well enough to understand it, so your speaking is probably just fine. I mean Shiina is in, and afaik, no ones even heard if that player knows how to speak English.
@@DoiInthanon1897 exactly. Unless they plan to do country team events in the future, I have no shot. The field of "decent" players is notable. But "decent" wont get you into any major championship 99.5% of the time for a solo event. So many people think because they beat someone thats in the field on a live challie, or a duel, or a battle royale once, they are suddenly elite stars. The difference between being an "elite star" & "decent" is the consistency. You can beat one of the elite stars once. But if it was a bo7, you are out 4-1, or if they are having an off day 4-2 at best.
