Attempting to run sub 2:20 this Sunday at the Big Beach Marathon in Gulf Shores, AL! First sea level race coming from 6000 feet up here in CO! We met after the Pikes Peak Marathon last year 2020. Hope you're doing well Sage!

Love your videos. It's been great help with my running. I am 53 years old and I increased my speed last October 2020. I started to race 10K's but been having so many injuries, shin, calf etc since October. I love running but getting tired of these injuries. I fixed my form to land underneath my chin. My stamina is good averaging 7.30 Minute Mile on a 10K runs. These injuries are crazy though. Keep posting great videos.

Dude, I've been out of running for 2 years due to a herniated disc. I'm out of shape, and have lost my ability to watch anything running related really. But I just got surgery about 5 weeks ago, and I know it's about time. Really great to hear your voice and hear you talk positively about running and racing again. Congrats on the sub 2:20!

you can jog a marathon with little preparation. To RUN a marathon is a whole other beast. Most coaches advice atleast 2 years of consistent training before attempting to run a marathon... Just saying :)

@Vo2maxProductions

hey great to hear! It's all about trying to stay as healthy as possible and just slowly build consistency (whether that means getting in a few more runs each week or slightly higher weekly mileage). But generally keep the pace very "Easy"....conversational pace. This will help with avoiding running too fast too soon. Good luck and enjoy the process (also see some of my other marathon training videos for ideas)

I'm 2 years into my marathoning career (I'm in my 40s), and my advice to my previous self would be to build the aerobic base first. Get a watch that tracks heart rate, focus on ~75% max HR for 90% of your running (for me, ~140 beats per minute), and watch the magic of aerobic fitness happen over a period of several months. You will never look fast during this phase, but it will potentiate your marathon game in amazing ways, and at that pace you're way less likely to get injured!

Good points for us all, though we are not aiming for 2:20 in a marathon, its applicable to a sub-3, sub-4 and so on, by apply some scaling. Great video.

That's so cool that clifton worked well for that marathon back in the day. I was wondering what shoe i would use for a marathon if i did one. Im going to get the mach 4, and it's looking like that might be my first marathon time trial shoe.

Hey, great talk and loved the vintage Hanson's footage. Is it possible to get the book about that era directly from you and not go through any retailer? Perhaps mail a money order? The half marathon one was really good too. I can see how these go together in a series. So those cycles were in the same year?

Great video and good point on the carbon fiber plate. It is a completely different ball game, if one looks at the distribution of marathon times among elite runners after this technology has been available. I wonder what your under 2h17m would have been, had this technology been available back then. I hope you can attempt to qualify for the olympic trials again and we get to follow your journey on this youtube channel, so we can learn from all your insights.

My build-ups to 16th at Boston 2015 (2:19:12) as well as a few other sub 2:20s in the last 5 years (2:19:50 at Houston etc) are all on Strava. However, when I ran my PR (2:16:52)...that was 10 years ago and Strava did not exist (hence the paper/Worddoc training log).

I'll do an update on that in a "saving my left glute" video series soon. In short, I'm not at 100% yet and there are some strength/muscle imbalances that I'm still trying to work out before ramping up to super high mileage again (hence why I didn't do the HOKA ONE ONE CARBON X2 event).

How many simulators do you recommend on a half marathon or marathon cycle?
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 3 года назад
you don't have to do any in that exact "simulator" distance/pace. However there should be at least a good 8-10 specific workouts were you are hitting your goal pace (or even slightly faster) for long repeats like 2km-5km and doing some Long Runs with fast finishes. Depends on experience level, goal pace, weekly mileage, and the exact time frame of the cycle (i.e. 16 or 20 weeks etc).

I am running 50 miles a week for training for track, i am feeling a bit burnt out from it and not sure if i am seeing progress should i take a few days off or stay consistent?
@sebjessup123
@sebjessup123 3 года назад
A lot of coaches use a three week cycle of two weeks hard, one week easy, to give the body a chance to recover. If you're feeling burnt out, you'll probably gain more from taking a few days easy than from trying to push through...
@adamede9316
@adamede9316 3 года назад
I had the same thing recently and honestly its best to take like 5 days off and start rebuilding. This way u can hit something like 60 a week with the same intensity
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 3 года назад
sorry to hear. That can be from a lot of things - however usually it is good practice to change your weekly mileage totals (so take a lower week at 35 miles etc), but then also you could increase eventually to 55 if you feel better. Take your easy days easy and also note things like sleep/lifestyle factors and diet/shoe type and how that can change your energy levels. Good luck!
@macdab55
@macdab55 3 года назад
That’s fast, in 2018 I ran around 20 mile race (I think total distance was around 32.3km), in 2:10, which is equivalent to 4:02/km. I thank now I am better and faster runner, but I think that if I would want to compete in marathon, I would get time somewhere around 2:40-2:50. Which for amateur is not too bad, but compering to times like this (not to mention people running sub 2:05) it seems like slow time. Also it’s nice to see how training is structured for pro runners.

Sage have you ever thought of getting a editor / camera guy? You got some of the best content on RU-vid , but got to market it more. 💪
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 3 года назад
thanks! I've thought about it, yes. Would have to pay them quite a bit I think! I also think it would be best for actual outside workout videos (i.e. they follow me on a bike and get some good moving shots as well as provide Long Run/workout support!). I also could use someone who knows something about graphics and editing (I'm still an amateur obviously and shoot with a pretty old camera with a dirty lens/sensor etc!). In terms of marketing, I've basically just seen the RU-vid space get a lot more running content in the last 5-10 years. Back when I started making running videos on RU-vid 12 years ago there wasn't much "competition" and the space had less going on with "click bait titles" and other people using my same video titles on newer videos or throwing around a lot of money to promote their brand /push videos etc. It's been super rewarding though and I like connecting with people around the world and hopefully providing informative (while also entertaining) content. I agree the quality and editing can improve a lot more! (in our defense though, the studio apartment is not a great place to film indoors because of the limited space!).
@masterassassin2222
@masterassassin2222 3 года назад
You might have to pay some pretty $ in the USA as far as a camera guy etc perhaps. ( finding a cheap skilled HS student with free time?) But for a good video editor you could out source also. (To a Online sourcing website looking for labor from Indian etc many entrepreneur do this ) Cheaper price and just many different directions you can take this. I just think seeing the quality of your channel now for like 1-2 years now i clearly can see that it’s way better compared to others. But lacks some of things that would help scale this 10x. Just like a business person , who might want to scale should be more focused on the ceo operations/ like the runner should focus on running. Instead of X and Y. Just like the real business person would focus on scaling and not stuck on some of the overhead that he can direct to a cheap $15 employee but would receive 2x-10x return. I hope I’m making sense 🙏. I think your ROI would be 10x the cost of a expensive or cheap extra hand around. Think of it as a investment return ... if it 10x or more does it matter if it costs $5 or 15 etc. Of course spend according to what fits best. But I just see massive potential and see the quality over many others. I think many would agree Remember sometimes the best content doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves and instead it’s the product or person that get the most attention. (Trump etc jk ) But why not do both. Just trying to help a brother out , since you helped me massively run my first marathon 🔥🤜🤛 love & respect thank you for the great work and content
