Following on from my last 'how I re-created' video, I asked if anyone would like me to go through any of my other covers. And I had a request for Gary Numan's 'Are Friends Electric?' So here it is...
This analysis is very extraordinarily, whoooow. I loved this song in the early 80ies as a youngster in Germany. Still one of my favourites. Wish you a calm an healthy Christmas. You analized it so fine-tuned, I am very impressed. Wish you and your familiy all the best in these difficult times of pandeminia...
This is a brilliant video, thanks David, I recently bought a JD XI and there are videos on RU-vid but most 3/4 years old and no one doing regular content, keep them coming 🙏
Many thanks Phil - I hope you enjoy using your JD-Xi as much as I do - have a look at the covers I've done and let me know if there are any you'd like me to break down - all the best :)
I've just bought jdxi couple of months ago and took me a bit of time to get to grips with it...slowly getting some ideas how to shape sounds. This will help me no end. Great video breakdown of a classic song. Any I've seen have been from few years back...so will look forward to more from you, as I've liked and subscribed. Thank you for posting. Excellent work.👍
@@DavidGordonJDXi thanks david keep up the good work im actually buying that jdxi due to your videos i own a roland fantom but your vids have me inspired to invest in one!! Merry xmas and happy new year to you 🎹👍
Absolutely Brilliant David! I love how it can emulate other Synths like the Moog, Arp Odyssey etc. Yes, we Synth lovers absolutely appreciate your JD-Xi how you did it vids very much! Quite interested in your Kraftwerk - The Model, Dr Who theme, Tears for Fears Mad World. Nick Rhodes of Duran approved of the JD-Xi and JD-XAs now that is good! Best regards, 80s chick Claire
Thank you so much for your great comments as always Claire. With the next lockdown looming, I should have plenty of time to make some more of these videos and I'd love to use some of your suggestions - all the best 🎹💖
@@davidgordon6136 aaaaw thanks! Definitely will cheer us up during lockdown thank you! Seeing as you did Kraftwerk, have you ever played Computer Love? I'm sure we have lots of requests if you want to keep busy during this very stressful year
Yes basically a music computer I have just bought a Roland 88 synth cannot play nowt but just love the sounds it generates -always loved Gary Numan to play is so hard.
@@DavidGordonJDXi I love ❤ all the synth pop of the 80s....that's why I wanted a jd xi.....equally I love to play beethoven or Bach on piano.....or drum 🥁 some nickle back or nirvana.....one question David I assume the 16 buttons are like 16th notes or semi quavers or 1e and a in drumming terms?
Yes, although the sequence pattern can be changed from 1/16 to 1/32 and 1/12. I love the simple ways it can be programmed. You can really build up some great patterns. I was especially pleased with the drum sequences I made for the cover I made of Boston's More than a feeling 👍
Many thanks for your great comments. I've only done one JMJ cover, here's a link to the tutorial ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x1dpYgqY2ZE.html
Hi Andy, glad you enjoyed this one. I'm thinking of making a new tutorial to go with the new version that I did a few weeks ago. No, I haven't made any covers of Erasure songs. All the best, David 🎸🎹🎶👍
Hi David I've had a go at friends electric wondered if your new version will be from scratch I like when you do them I'm sorry to keep asking you but it's nice to be able to play something people know and I've done three of your tutorials now and hope to do more so thanks David you are a great musician Andy
Great Sounds! You killed it David. Question, Would you buy the Roland JD-XI now if you were to do it again? I'm thinking of getting this synth. I think in combination with the ASR hydra explorer. I like what looks like easy programming and sequencing.
Many thanks for your great comments. My JD-Xi is now four years old and I still think it represents good value. It is packed with such a lot of features like the sequencer and vocoder which are very easy to use. I love the way that I can quickly make a drum track to practice with my guitar. The bass sounds are very good as confirmed by a friend who plays bass guitar. The downside is that it does feel very fragile and wouldn't stand much abuse. The small keys aren't very playable and the velocity control has to be turned off for fear of breaking them. Menu diving can be a bit tricky to begin with too. But on the whole, I would still recommend it to a beginner on a budget. It's a lot of fun! All the best, David 🎹🎶👍
Hi Claire, I have a little Sooty torso that I saved off an old RNIB collection box and my little black cat is also called Sooty and she's often in my videos too.
Just been going through a bit of a lull - but I've powered up the system this afternoon and have spent a few hours trying out some new ideas. Hopefully have something new to post later this week - all the best, David
Hi, I'm new to the JDXi, do you offer a learners guide to creating your songs etc? eg. an idiots guide to the programming steps? Cheers, and keep up the good work! Jim.
Hi Jim, thanks for getting in touch. I've only made the videos that you can find on my RU-vid channel. The version of West End Girls is quite complex and took me ages to work out. I'd recommend trying my version of Hard Times as a good one to start off with. I have done a few one to one video sessions on Facebook Messenger. But have a go on your own first and let me know if you need more help. All the best, David 🎶👍
Hi Dave, thanks for suggesting this. I initially thought that it wasn't needed, but looking back on the original tutorial, it could have a lot more detail added. Give me a bit of time and I'll try and come up with a new video. All the best, David 🎸🎶👍
@@DavidGordonJDXi cool. check my jam videos if you're interested. I use a nanoKontrol to set volume and effects for individual drum parts. I might build a dedicated midi controller with arduino in the future. This thing is so powerful. The midi implementation manual is just bananas.
I'm from Hungary on a dead slow internet connection. So I enforced to watch some sections more than once (when no playing, not filling the buffer anymore). To be honest, first, please watch the available recordings from that song. First, the you failed to follow the drums all. The hi-hat sounds on every 16 and only interrupted by every 4 on by an "open" hi-hat. I just not sure, is direct deviation, or simply just not see/ heard that on recordings.
I made my first cover of this song over 3 years ago and this tutorial is based on that version. The new cover that I made a few weeks ago is quite a bit different to the first one and I hope to make a new tutorial based on this one soon. All the best, David 🎹🎶👍
@@DavidGordonJDXi yep, sir, maybe clear up the mistake for users, who find your tutorial after search the original music from Tubeway Army /Gary Numan with those information be edited to the title- "to ny cover for...", or at least the description. Just note that fact, there billions of content here, not needed to making harder the search with mistitled contents. Recommended title sounds like: "How I recreated my cover of .." I appreciate when you realized the importance, and change the title. Best regards: Czink A, Hungary.
@@szennyvizcsatorna2483 there is information in the description in my new cover version saying that it is a reworking of my original cover and I did put Tubeway Army in the title too! Sorry for any confusion, it is only a hobby for me. I hope you'll enjoy the new tutorial that I'll be making.
@@DavidGordonJDXi there are tutorials on how to recreate nearly every analog or mellotron sound. BTW yo ushould do Baba O'Reily on teh Roland I think that would be easy to accomplish
I revisited this last year and made a few changes to the original tutorial, including the tempo which is now 94 BPM. Here's a link to the new version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JnSXJn-oyUI.htmlsi=A6E0YQWwbNIc9RF6
Well done, but the BPM aren't 90, "Are Friends Electric" is made in halftime (3 is 2), about 130-135 BPM. So you make it in the original BPM and halftime, the drums will be much more aggressive. At 90 BPM it's just a little lame^^.
Hi Sven, many thanks for your informative comment. Soon after I first got my JD-Xi I made a cover version of 'Are friends electric' which got quite a good response. I was asked if I could make a breakdown of my version and so that's what you have here. I may have another go at it one day. All the best, David 🎶🎹👍
As a drummer , your a bit off with the rythem if yiu listen to the song the hi-hat is constant , also old grey whistle test version is different again, love the synth parts though
Thanks for your comment Scott. This was one of my first attempts at a full cover version and I appreciate what you say. I'm thinking of trying this one again with all the experience I've got over the last three years. All the best, David 🎹🎶👍
This was one of my first attempts at a tutorial and yes, the camera work is poor. It does tend to distort quite badly and most of my recent videos are all shot from a static tripod. Funnily enough, this has proved to be one of my most popular videos! Sorry you found it unpleasant
