Brian, I am exactly the same. 9 times out of 10 Troy has made a bass video for a song I need to practice. He’s my “go to guy” every time. 😃👍

Hi Ken. I saw your video in my feed but have not had the time to view the entire thing, but I will. It's more coincidental that our videos came out about the same time. Like I said, I've been both promising and putting it off for quite some time. If we can help someone who's considering posting some videos, I think that's great. There's a number of different ways to do it and make a decent sounding video.

Hi Sam. Thanks so much for the very kind words. It is very possible that we crossed paths (I'm 58), but I rarely spoke to anybody back then. I was painfully shy and withdrawn. I've had two different methods of recording. The early way was a microphone, that sat between a little amp and the computer speakers and picked up both the music and my bass, went straight into the camera. It sounded surprisingly good for being as primitive as it was. You can tell these videos because I'm not wearing headphones. When I started using GarageBand to generate my sound it sounded a bit more hi-fi. The splitter cable is a simple 1/8" Y cable (male/female/female) that was plugged into my computer speaker's headphone output. One of the outputs fed my headphones, so I could hear my bass and the song I was playing along with on iTunes. The other output went straight into the camera. It was a cleaner and more direct way of recording. Still a bit primitive as the audio and video was recorded straight into the camera as I played it and there could be no editing done after the fact. What you see and hear was what you got. The key to this method (or both methods actually) was finding a camera that had a microphone input. The Kodak Zi8 was one of the few that offered that feature and I bought a couple of backups off of eBay, just in case. I'd be happy to spend more time with you on the phone or in person and offer you whatever assistance I can. Thanks for the reply. It's good for playing live (used it today - no cab or amp on stage!) and for practicing as well. After further thought, I've realized that it doesn't support playing the recorded track and recording the outbound mix at the same time. A pity.

Hi Lori. I'm glad you found the video watchable. As a person who enjoys all things simplistic, I found GarageBand, in the limited way that I use it, to be very intuitive to use - a breeze even. I think the next video I do will be on my basses with a little more detail on my sound and the way they are set up, with their advantages and disadvantages. I don't know about the "mentor" stuff but thanks anyway. I hope you're liking your thumb-rest as much as I do mine.

That was really my intention with my covers - to highlight the bass parts within the context of the song. So people could hear how the bass worked in the context of the song along with the other instruments. I accomplished this better on some covers than others. Thanks a lot.

Thank you for watching. Ugh, I've been procrastination for such a long time on the bass video. I just know it's going to take up a lot of time and I'm dreading it, but I will do it before I sell off a chunk of the collection. No actual Steinberger because I would not pay what they are selling for right now... around $3,000. Perhaps if I played one and really loved it, but I would not buy one on a whim. Also, with a few exceptions, I really don't think that one really needs to spend more than $1,500 in order to have themselves a really nice bass. Of course it's all up to personal tastes, but some of my favorite basses happen to be the least expensive ones.

@@TJH3113 Thank You for your reply, I agree that a bass need not cost a fortune as well, case point is that I noodle around on songs on a Jazz Aerodyne that was a thrift store rescue candidate. It has the slimmest neck at the nut and is a very fast and easy to play. This is my thrash bass that stays out of the case on a stand to be grabbed at a whim. I recently purchased a Brooklyn L2 for way too much money here in Japan. I have always wanted one and would sketch drawings of them on my high school note books and it was finally time to make the step and am not disappointed. I am intrigued with the 4000 model you have. All in all, you have great taste and thank you again. Take it easy!

Thanks a lot. My main objective when I started posting was to have a clear separation between my bass and the music and to be able to distinguish between both. Luckily, using the microphone accomplished that, to some extent, but I am much happier with what I'm doing now, if for no other reason than it's a pleasure to hear myself at a comfortable level while I'm playing. Definitely post a video on your method, the more the merrier. As far as getting to know me better, I try to let as few people, as I am able, in on the fact, that I'm quite the boob. Thanks again.
