Would anyone care to guess what album was released on this date in 1982?
If you guessed Billy Idol's self-titled debut album, you would have guessed correctly. This song, "White Wedding" was the second single released off the album.
The bass was played by Phil Feit who lent a nice, steady, solid feel to Billy Idol's material. I remember reading an interview with the engineer who recorded the album who described Feits playing as very "even...requiring very little compression." At the time I wasn't really sure what the function of compression was, so I took that statement to mean that, "If you played unevenly, you needed compression." By that time, I was already pretty focused on getting "even" output (volume and tone) from of both my plucking fingers. And I was a firm believer in using alternating fingers - always. Over the years I've relaxed that rule as, sometimes, pawing the bass with one finger just feels right. However, my trusty middle finger is always there, waiting on the bench to be called into play. You may have heard me mention before that I'm not a real "endurance" player, meaning, I can play quickly in short bursts but seem to tire quickly when playing extended passages...even a song like this. Not that it's super fast or anything, but those 8th notes...
edit 1:(I've just been informed that these are 16th notes but I'll leave this here anyway as testimony as to how little I actually know about music)
edit 2:(there is a battle being waged as to whether they are actually 8th or 16th notes)
edit 3:(my buddy Jim Trice, guitar teacher to the stars, has determined that they are, indeed, 8th notes)
...can just wear a brother down. Anyway, if you happened to be paying attention to such things, you would notice me bouncing around from single-finger, alternating fingers, and a combination of those two techniques throughout the song. At this point, I don't even think about it. My fingers just do what they need to do to keep going.
I'm playing the formerly-fretless Guild B-302A (the "A" stands for Ash).

Hi! My brother is Phil Feit who plays bass on "White Wedding" as well as the entire album BILLY IDOL. He played "White Wedding" with a pick not his fingers on the right hand and it is 8th notes. We have seen a lot of bassists playing it inaccurately on RU-vid with the fingers & positioning though you are playing it in the right position on the 7th fret starting on the B note on the E string. And there is slight compression on it too in which you got. Overall, nice job and it's really cool to hear people like yourself be influenced by Phil's playing and that song. Cheers! 😃🎸

Wow, I'd like to thank your brother so much for those basslines. I've been an Idol fan since I was a small Kid, and even before I understood what the bass even was, I was addicted to this bassline and Daytime Drama's. And now, if I play bass years after, he had a great rule on it. Thanks Phil!

Thanks Guilherme for your kind words about Phil’s bass playing. As his brother, I am a fan of his playing too. He didn’t play on Daytime Drama though he did do a pre-production version of it as well as many other songs on album Rebel Yell. Steve Stevens is the bass player on Daytime Drama. If you have the 1999 expanded version of Rebel Yell, Phil is on the session takes for Rebel Yell, Motorbikin’, and Flesh For Fantasy.

Let me just make it clear: these are definitely 8th notes. :D The song is in 4/4 and the snare plays on the second and fourth beat, like with most songs. You're playing two notes per beat - thus, they're 8th notes. It's not complex stuff, people. :) That aside: your constant even tone is amazing! It's exactly what these songs need! Thank you for sharing, it's a pleasure to hear such a good bass tone and performance!

Great job Troy! Not to take away from your performance, because playing a song like this is tough and relentless, but those are 8th notes. The guitar noise that starts the song is 16ths. It goes 1e&a-2e&a-3e&a-4e&a {4 for each beat} Then you come in and go 1&-2&-3&-4& {2 per beat} BTW, I also got a kick out of 2:24

I love the description on this video, and I feel you on the single finger rhythm. A riff played with the index finger carries a slightly different rhythm then one played with both index and middle (at least this is what I have noticed) and, whenever my fingers get really tired I incorporate the ring finger *gasp*

Would you say this bass line is an example of pocket playing? I mean the rapid repetition needs to be totally on pocket in order to pull off the energy and drive of the song. Surprising difficult I would think despite it's simplicity. Did they use a lot of compression on the bass in the recording? Michael Anthony of Van Halen has fingers that could pop off his hand and walk around the World when supplying this simple but difficult to keep up totally on pocket plucking pattern.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 6 месяцев назад
I guess it could be considered "pocket playing". Pocket playing is anytime the bass is played in perfect time with the beat/groove. Personally, I find songs like this difficult to play. Not sure about the amount of compression used. Yes, Michael Anthony is a class act. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Take care!

I'm the same way. Index finger alternating with middle, swap to just the index finger, and finally I'll do it Geddy-style and use my middle finger alternating up and down. 16th notes? Time to surrender to the inevitable and break out a pick.

Hi Troy. I'm considering a fret job on my '80/81 B-302A. Plays just fine right now, but there's not much "meat" left to crown them again. Do you recall what size wire you used, why and how it's working for you? Thank You!
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 3 года назад
Hi, Allen. I'm sorry, but I don't recall what the fellow used on it, but it was thicker/bigger than I would have liked. It was still a great improvement from having not frets at all. They just seem to sit a bit higher than I am used to and, while I don't think it effects anything, my concern is that, if I fret too hard, the note will go sharp. Probably not an issue, but something I think about. The guy who works on my basses now uses really thin wire on his builds and I'm sure I'll eventually have him do one of my other Guilds at some point.

Well here I am again looking to learn a new song and there you are..Lol..I can’t believe how many different songs you cover.. great job by the way.. I was wondering do you have or every played around with a 6 string bass??? The reason I ask is because my brother in law just turned me on to a band called Dream Theater..to me there like a cross between Rush and Metallica.. have you ever heard of them?? There bass player is unreal he plays nothing but a 6 string and I swear he has the longest fingers I’ve ever seen..some of there stuff for me personally is hard to wrap my head around it’s just crazy.. most of there songs are really long and they change keys and tempo like crazy.. well once again I’ve taking up a lot of your time but just want to see if you’ve ever checked them out?? If not give them a listen and please let me know your thoughts on them..just curious to see what you think..have a great day...
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 4 года назад
Yeah, my musical interests are pretty wide and varied... to an extent. No, I have never played a 6 string bass. It just never interested me, I don't play very much in the guitar range unless I have to. Yes, I've heard of Dream Theater and have seen them a couple of times. Amazing musicians, but their music never resonated with me. I like some complex music, but I don't like complexity solely for the sake of complexity, which is how their music comes across to me. But, to be honest, I've never really explored their catalog. Another pet peeve with that band is that the bass player gets one of the worst recorded and live bass sounds I've ever heard. I'm sure it's not his fault... probably has more to do with the recording/mixing engineer, but I hated to see a guy who is obviously doing some amazing stuff and not being able to hear a note of it.
@drew64rush82

TJH3113 ,very cool that you again for getting back to me..
