Loved the tip about the palm sander. I have tried using a green pad on my orbital sander but it doesn’t stay on overly well. The palm sander makes more sense since it doesn’t rotate - and I have one I almost never use! Thanks Darin!
Great video and tips. Your drill looks fabulous. I live in FL and my drill has rust all over it. And I've neglected it. Now it's time to get moving. Thanks for sharing and continued success. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Have some fun and be safe. Love PegEgg
Good pointers! I’ve got a craftsman drill press that could use some love like this. Plus a Delta scroll saw with a rusty table. Thanks for the idea! Hopefully I can get them looking much better!
Phosphoric acid dilluted, is the best acid cleaner, as it forms a hard invisible barrier that resists rust. Phosphoric acid is the main ingredient in "Rust Converter" paint. When they paint cars, they wipe them down with a water rinse dillute with phosphoric acid, and it removes the free iron that you can't see, and creates a rust proof coating, so the metal doesn't rust under the paint. Self etching primer contains phosphoric acid, so when it's sprayed on bare metal it doesn't allow rust to occur under the primer. Phosphoric acid is a miracle, although it's not very strong compared to Hydrochloric Acid (concrete cleaner). But Hydrochloric acid is not safe, because it opens the metal to further rapid rusting. Many people don't reaize how important it is to use phosphoric acid. In a pinch, Citric Acid and Acetic Acid (vinegar) are apparently very good as well, although Phosphoric acid is considered one of the best ways to clean and passivate stainless steel and steel. On stainless steel, Phosphoric Acid also removes the invisible rust, and forms a hard "passivation" layer of Chromium.
I’m about to resurface the exact same drill press. Thanks. Not to be “that guy” but I think a wire wheel is the last thing I’d skip safety glasses on. I’ve had wires fly off and stick me in the face like a dart gun.
