Ahh! DeLL drivers! I remember those. I have a DeLL Latitude E6420, but on DeLL's support site in the downloads section there are way too many drivers for it. I think there were different configurations all called the E6420 and I never remembered to make a handy CD like the one you have with the drivers for my revision. 7 year old me loved to download all 40 of the .exe files, select them all in the file explorer and press Enter. Then, the laptop would hang for a solid 50 seconds, half the installers errored out because of the wrong laptop revision and that's how I used to find the right ones. Also, there was always one small problem that I needed my Dad's help for - the network drivers! My Dad had to download them for me to his laptop, copy them to a pendrive that I could plug in to the E6420 and install network card drivers from it. Then I did the 40 .exe "procedure" described earlier. Hope you enjoyed this little story, my dear reader!

I think I've installed Windows XP close to 50 times in my life. From using it on my actual main PC to throwing it on a fun project PC to virtual machines. That blue background will be forever engrained in my memory

If you want to simplify the drivers, use SDI(Snappy Driver Installer), download the full offline version and keep it on a flash drive, it works on Windows 2000 and up with 32 and 64 bit

For older rigs like this, sometimes you can get a real boost just by going with a 2.5" ssd + interface adapter (as long as it'll fit inside the bay). You gain a considerable amount of speed setting up, and on the desktop. Clearly there's a limit, and you're not going to get the full speed, but typically these old systems running XP (or older) are very happy with "just" 60-120gb, and that'll only set you back $15-$20. Another $8 for the adapter, and you're gold.

it's worth mentioning if the original HDD is installed in the computer there's usually a partition you can flag as active to do a factory reset on most common brands, some of them you can even find an image of your original windows install

hey Michael, have you considered making a disk image of the systems you reinstall frequently? It's way faster than having to decompress files, installing the drivers, activation and whatnot. Plus you won't have to use optical media! PXE is wonderful

The XP setup screens never get old indeed! I work with VMs and I almost always install XP on them (although I rarely do any key presses because of VMWare's Easy Install feature) and I'm just so used to this setup that I don't even think about it. Also the welcome music is awesome af

Hey Michael, since you've made videos about making Windows look like other versions of Windows, maybe you should check out Chicago 95. It's a theme/guide to make XFCE look very close to Windows 95. I found out about it recently and even though I don't use it I found it pretty neat.

You know you could always just install XP with SP3 and save all the hassle of installing those service packs separately. And it's always a good idea to install the chipset driver first, then the less critical drivers afterwards.

My method of restoration is by doing the process of installation the first time on any new/old PC's. This of course requires the compatible OS, drivers and the customisation of various settings to get it exactly the way I want. Additionally I install all programs I will be using on said machine(s) along with the usual .net frameworks, directX libraries, and etc along with system updates. After, I use CCleaner to clean up registry, temp files and other unnecessary junk along with manually cleaning directories created by driver/software archives that have already installed into Windows. Finally, once everything is set exactly to how I would like (themes, wallpapers, time zone, keyboard input language & etc), I use Acronis True Image (EaseUS Todo Backup as an alternative) to create a complete image of the entire installed system. That way I have the ultimate restoration image in case I want to start over without the headache of searching for drivers, software and everything else. Plus I upload the greatly compressed Backup image onto OneDrive for easy retrieval in future. Been doing this method since 2009. Has served me well. Excellent video as always.

I feel that uncertainty of how many times you've installed XP, I've done it dozens of times at least. When I was working on my own custom Windows XP mod and every time I wanted to test it out I had to do a new install of it, which got old pretty fast...

When I do restores I typically try to use Norton Ghost or Macrium Reflect to clone from a clean backup

I just restored a Dell D530 about a month ago. I used a Dell specific Windows XP CD that years ago I slip streamed SP3 into. Once I had all of the drivers installed, I installed the unofficial Service Pack 4 since Automatic Updates for Windows XP can't be used any more.

Just loving this video, you have a very pleasant presentation style. Why not use a USB drive? USB storage is supported out of the box with XP, and it saves you from having to deal with optical media. I just installed a D610, even managed to install XP from a usb (there's a video idea for you!) All the best!

If you are reinstalling the same things to the same computer over and over, once you get the system setup, use clonezilla to make a drive image. Then you can just re-image the drive. Will save you so much time without having to sit through yet another OS install... unless you’re into that of course.

In fact, you can install SP3 without SP2 if you have SP1. That means you can skip one, but not two SP's. Also, have you heard about the unofficial SP4 for XP?

@audroar It should list all of the drivers there. They're all stored in individual files that you'll need to download. Just make sure to search by the computer's model number or service tag. Hope this helps!

Question why not use a flash drive? Even if the laptop doesn't support USB boot you can use a custom bootloader

If you can find yourself one I'd recommend getting a Zalman ZM-VE300 as it has an option to use it as a virtual ODD

I have a VE300, I can confirm it's garbage. You should get the IODD one instead as it's far more stable.

Hey Michael, why don't you try looking for a solution to put the original factory Dell Recovery partition for this laptop on it? I'm guessing there was a recovery version for XP, and I managed to fix my Samsung laptop after doing some digging by finding a USB Admin Tool to restore the recovery partition from. Maybe you could find one? I'll try spend some time finding something for you cuz why not? :)

I just did some digging but realised that if you make a complete fresh install of XP with full drivers and such, installing AOEMI OneKey Recovery can help you since its free to make an alternate recovery partition and you don't need to use discs as much after making a backup of your HDD. I think saving the backup file is easier to the recovery partition since its one click and you're back loaded to go

I just restored one of these! Check archive.org for a DELL OEM copy of Windows XP Professional, I installed that on mine (strangely no activation prompt and nowhere to launch the activation wizard) and loaded a dozen old games on it. TRON 2.0 is a good one to start with, I loved that game for the graphics and storyline

Hi, very good video. I am actually going to install Win XP pro on my Old dell D610. IT Will be my First Win XP install ever! And i Will follow your Steps :) What i need to know is which drivers exactly should i download for dell d610 Win XP pro 32b. On officiall dell website theres is almost 70 drivers for this d610. I dont really understand which of Them should i download before instalation Win. You used only 8 drivers. Please, can you advice me?

You can skip right from Windows XP SP 1 right to Windows XP SP 3, It doesn’t require Service Pack 2 when updating to Service Pack 3!!’

I spent all evening playing with an old pentium 4 computer that has xp on it. I can now watch youtube on it with no graphics card and 1.5 gb of ddr ram. Waste of time but oh so fun to do.

The funny thing is that I just restored a latitude too from windows 10 to 7 because the performance was so poor that I could literally click on chrome go eat supper and come back and 5 minutes later it would open
