This helped me immensely, only bleeding from 2 fingers instead of all of them! Seriously though, this was the easiest way to restring also highly recommend a manual string winder.

Just wanted to thank you for making this video! I have been aware of this method before but always struggled with the plain string side. I always got binding at the tuning post and could never get a clean wind and figured it was just because they were thinner and less likely to hold the lock. Turns out, I was wrapping them over the wrong way!

i string the same way you do, always have, and my guitars all stay in wonderful tune, except for weather changes but they still stay in tune to themselves.

Great video Rob! I have mentioned before I have a 2018 SG Standard same color as yours but mine has the locking tuners and I am constantly using that little black Gibson cloth on it.

Joseph Corcoran I missed out on the locking tuners by getting a 2019 model huh? 😂 but yeah that Gibson cloth has definitely come in handy!

Rob Galley yeah it’s the only guitar I’ve ever had with the locking tuners. I do like how easy it makes restringing. I do basically the same thing that you do with my other ones.

i restrung with 11-52. usually had 10-46 on my SG, and 9-42 on my strat... these 11-52 are way too heavy... and too heavy for this sg i think. i've never had 9-42 on my sg but thinking about trying. i've found the sweetspot with intonation and action on the strat, never quite found it on the sg, might be running too heavy of stringst???

Like your video, just a tip, put some scotch tape on the tail piece to keep it in position all the rest it's pretty much perfect, good job!

I have the current SG Standard heritage, which I received as a birthday present, Feb this year......I've since switched to Ernie Ball Supper slinky 9's..........I get fed up up with the g-string constantly going out of tune......So I'm going to order some new strings and try your method of of re stringing

I highly recommend upping to 10s instead of 9s. The neck scale length being shorter will make them more playable. 9s on my SG felt like I’d strung my guitar up with elastic bands.. hope it works!

So the strings go to the outside of the headstock.

Wrap around the outside then wind the opposite direction over the top 🤟

I'm curious why you don't cut your strings after the 1st wrapping, keeps all that unnecessary wiring out of the way. PRS recommends this for all it's guitars. With your technique do you not still need to stretch your strings taught so they stay in tune?

Is it normal that my tailpiece where I first enter the string in falls off and also that the left side of it seems to be screwed in less than the right side

Funny how he's got a RU-vid channel giving tutorials on how to string an SG yet fails to mention the 17 degree angle of Gibson headstocks which make them go out of tune constantly. What the video failed to mention is that you need to compensate for that angle by winding your strings up to the top of the peg, counteracting the angle of the headstock. Every knowledgeable guitarist knows this about Gibsons. Very bad advice.

Had my SG for 3 years now & it holds tuning perfectly well. If you have had issues with Gibson’s going out of tune then you have just had bad guitars, either that or I have been lucky with this one.

@@RobGalley yeah I had problems with the strings going sharp due to binding on the nut. As soon as I wound the strings up instead of down, it stayed in tune perfectly.

Question: Does this method of winding over the top help keep SG's in tune better? And will the Wilkinson j44 vintage style tuners work with this method? THANKS
