How I ruined this MCM dresser flip

Well, this flip went a bit sideways on me. This was about one year into my flipping journey. When I stripped the drawers, the area with the pinstriped veneer absorbed too much moisture and it swelled the substrate. I tried everything I could think of at the time, but had to pivot and add molding to cover the swelled areas. I painted the drawers black and was able to strip and refinish the body. I was super disappointed, but I learned some valuable lessons. I hope it helps you avoid some of my mistakes.

My heart SANK for you, when you had so many issues with this piece. But adding the little trim pieces actually made it look even better ! Good job keeping your cool & resolving the issue !! I love this piece.

The molding actually has made it look more beautiful! It's added character and increased the beauty of the dresser. In my opinion this was an awesome accident! Sometimes things happen to the outcome spectacular! Adding the molding certainly did that! Stunning finished product! The newlyweds will be so happy to receive this gorgeous gift! 😊❤

Aw, thanks Pam! I I was pleasantly surprised. Actually I texted her and told her it wasn’t going to work to be all wood. I found another dresser and that will be the video next week. 😊

The added moulding really added to the piece. Looks as though it was made that way originally. This was a great flip😊😊

I love how you landed on your feet with this one. I have switched from using Citristrip to QCS or Kwikstrip due to the heavy moisture content in Citristrip. I have realized that it darkens a lot of my wood surfaces and creates blotches. I used it for years and then watched a RU-vid video that compared strippers. It opened my eyes to the issues I was having. My naivety caused me a lot of extra work trying to get a consistent surface after using Citristrip. I now use the QCS from Stripwell or Kwikstrip. I hate the odor but the wood surfaces are so much nicer.

Thanks Judy! Yes, I don’t use Citristrip anymore 🥴 I also like QCS, but it doesn’t work for me on every finish. I haven’t tried Kwikstrip. I’ll have to try that one. I use Klean Strip, but it’s so smelly. I’ve been liking Blue Bear Soy gel. I’m always on the look out for a better stripper

Great way to solve a problem! Loved the way it turned out. I've run into problems using some strippers on MCM furniture before too.

I’m so glad it worked! I think it was just those strips that were giving me the problem. Moisture was not my friend on this flip.

I'm glad she was happy with what you did since she originally wanted all wood. Of course it's beautiful! And I learned a lot as always. Thanks for sharing your mishaps - because we all have them - and we can learn ways to 'pivot' as you say.

Well, it didn’t end up going to the newlywed couple. I had to text her and explain what happened. I told her I’d keep looking for another dresser. I finally found one and next week I’ll show you all the one I did for them!

My go-to for any older finish is first to try my carbide scraper. And then if that doesn’t work or for very detailed elements, I’ll go to a stripper. I just find the scraper faster less mess and no worry about depositing the old finish anywhere. You did a beautiful job on this piece.
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors 8 месяцев назад
I use my scraper a lot more now too. After this experience, it made me cautious about adding too much moisture to pieces. I guess you learn with each piece 🤷‍♀️
@catherinebiermann295
@catherinebiermann295 8 месяцев назад
Oh definitely. I’m trying to see a painted MCM piece. I scraped all the old finish off and decided to use a gel stain to change the yellowy tone. It really looked awful and when I tried to take it off so much of it stayed in the pores making the whole thing looked speckled and not in a good way. My only recourse has been to paint. Im so sad I couldn’t bring my vision to life. I have since learned that this type of wood, ribbon Sapele, needs to be dyed with a special process. So much to learn in this hobby.

That was a clever thing to do 👏🏻 Btw, have you considered simply sanding the swelling smooth, priming with oil-based primer, and painting over it? It's what I usually to when I have to bubbled parricle board to tackle.
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors 8 месяцев назад
Well, I don’t think I could have sanded it without removing the veneer and the particle board wouldn’t have been smooth so I would have to wood fill, etc. So I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ Maybe or maybe just as many steps

I believe it’s not uncommon for MCM pieces to use veneer over particle board. Thanks for helping us learn.
@ivylaneinteriors

I think if there weren’t strips of veneer on the drawers, I would have been fine. The liquid just settled in those strips and lifted. So frustrating! I will definitely be more cautious in the future

Lisa, you totally pulled that off with a lot of ingenuity ! As you said, who would ever think they would be made with such cheap underpayments? Now we know, thanks to you! But really, what other option was there as far as not causing the swelling? Just light sand and gel stain?
@ivylaneinteriors
@ivylaneinteriors 8 месяцев назад
Thanks girl! Yes, I think sanding would have been the better option and maybe carbide scraper, but the tiny area with the strip of veneer was fragile so that would probably have to be hand sanded. In the future, if I come across a similar design I will not introduce any liquid! 🥴 She wanted a light wood, so I needed to strip it. If I was just going to refresh the finish, gel stain would have worked just fine. 🙌🏼

For me, knowing that there is particle board underneath, and the problems you already had.....I would've used Shelac before painting w a water based paint.
