In this video I restored an old hydraulic jack.
I found it on a junkyard/metal waste. When I saw it I really wondered why someone would throw this away, because it wasn’t in a very bad condition, besides being very dirty.
As you can see it wasn’t too hard restoring it and making it work again and I am sure you guys could do that too! If you don’t have a lathe it’s not a problem. Pretty much everything I did on the lathe can also be done without one. Also sandblasting is not mandatory. So go on, restore stuff and save it from scrap disposal! :) If it can be repaired, why throw it away?
Simplified explanation of the physics behind hydraulic jacks:
Other than gases fluids are incompressible. The laws of fluid (liquid) pressure (Pascal’s law) says that pressure in fluids spreads evenly through the liquid. Example: If you put pressure on a fluid then there will be the same pressure everywhere in that fluid (if hydrostatic pressure is neglected).
Through the pumping movement hydraulic oil gets pushed into the jack cylinder and pushes the ram up, since the hydraulic jack is a „closed conduit“. The oil in the jack can’t be compressed (like air for example: compressed air), so it has to push something away to move. It’s kind of the same principle of a syringe.
If you wan’t more detailed info just write it in the comments and I will try my best to answer your questions.
The work on the project took about 30 hours (inclusive filming) plus about 18 hours of editing.
If you are willing to support me leave a comment, subscribe and share my work, I really appreciate and it helps me a lot!
I hope you will have some fun watching the video! If you have any further questions on the process, tools, material, zinc plating or else write a comment, I will try my best to answer your questions.
I hope you liked the video! Thank you for watching and feel free to leave a comment and subscribe if you liked :)
Disclaimer:
The experiments are only for educational purposes and serve as entertainment.
I am experienced in handling the used substances and I advise everyone who is not a trained professional not to imitate the experiments I show you.
For experiments which could cause potential danger I will not tell you which chemicals I am using to prevent imitating. Those who know what is happening, know the chemicals anyway and probably are trained professionals. :)
I am not responsible for personal injury or property damage if any actions shown in the video will be imitated.
I hope you understand.
Until next time :)

I maintained and repaired many of these hydraulic jacks as well as tripod jacks used to lift up aircraft while in the service. This video took me back over 40 years. Thanks.

I want to add to my previous statement that many of the other ground support equipment mechanics I worked with did not like working on anything that did not have a power plant. They felt it was beneath them. I felt that if I did not do a good job that the jack would fail and the load it was carrying would fall on whoever was under it. That person would be terribly hurt or killed and of course the load which could be a vehicle or aircraft would be damaged. I commend you for your excellent work on bringing these abused and often forgotten pieces back to working condition.

Another valuable and useful tool brought back to life with some chemistry thrown in - a perfect combination for me. Awesome job done. Quick question. I notice the nut at the top of the device was really quite gnarly and battered and was wondering why this was only cleaned up but not aesthetically improved by machining on the lathe or some degree of filing? Great video, though.
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Год назад
Thank you! The marks on the nut at the top were casting marks and I just decided to keep them as a contrast to the freshly painted part. Also I like the look of cold blued parts with casting marks 😄 It was just aesthetically pleasing for me so I left it like that 🙂 Thank you for your comment!

You said it was dirty but in good condition. Why not just clean it, fill it with oil, bleed it and put it use?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Год назад
With “good” condition I meant it was not in condition for dumping it at the metal waste like someone did. Of course you could do it like you described, but as you can see in the video the paintjob was in bad condition (probably due to poor paintjob before) and the zinc plating wasn’t in great condition also.

I've heard of "noble rot," but never "noble rust." For the chemically illiterate among us, would you expound on that a bit, please?
@DrHutOfHandcraft
@DrHutOfHandcraft Год назад
Noble rust isn’t a chemical term. Tbh I don’t even know if you can say it in english like that, but I have seen people explaining cold bluing and saying that the black layer is “noble rust”, which means “Edelrost” in german. “Edelrost” is a even and wanted rust on steel surfaces for optical reasons and also further corrosion protection. It is literally rust but not always naturally occurring, you kind of make the part rust to have that desired finish. Also “Edelrost” has a even surface unlike natural occuring rust. You could probably translate it into (desired) patina. If you have more questions feel free to ask :)
