One of Rocket League's most deadly mechanics is simpler than you think. In fact, I bet YOU could learn it in less than a day. The best part is, even though it's pretty easy to learn, it's also extremely effective even at the top level of Rocket League. This is how I scored on SSLs with one basic mechanic.

The Air Dribble is probably the most commonly overcomplicated mechanic in Rocket League. Players frequently first begin by learning it the HARD way first, and often give up before realizing that it doesn't have to be that hard to begin with. On top of that, they also don't realize that the HARD way of learning it is also in fact the LESS EFFECTIVE way in competition. If you make this minor tweak to your technique with air dribbles in Rocket League, you will get the best of both worlds since it is easier this way AND more effective. To prove it, I taught it to a Diamond player for the first time in just over 30 minutes, and I used the same mechanic to score on SSLs at the end of the video.

The air dribble is so strong in GC1 right now because everyone one goes for a flip reset and everyone on defence is prepared for one. Meaning they simply are not ready when you just maintain your speed straight to net

reflection of poor 2 man defending, first guy should be up hovering around the height of the crossbar to block the path of a basic air dribble, forcing you to go backboard or drop the air dribble, inevitably giving up your possession to the second player. but as I'm sure you know, people never challenge. ever. they just keep watching and watching until the ball goes in their net. It is a real shame that glueing didn't get more coverage. They are both a spectrum of skills that have their uses. Glueing is better for 3s in most situations because you can control the 50. Where is when you two touch you tend to get bumped off the ball by the first challenge, or you beat the 1st challenge and there is at least 1 more coming. Glueing is also hard to defend against when it is done in a certain way where it is dragged as far as possible. They are both important skills, and focusing on the two touch as a spectrum of things to practice helps a lot.
@ragegaze3482
@ragegaze3482 9 месяцев назад
exactly, this video seems to be based on 1v1. In a 2s scenario which most people are going to be using this on, at higher ranks you are challenged immediately by the first man and need to be on the ball at all times in order to outplay that opponent. You don't get the luxury of separating from the ball to get a stronger touch. If you do seperate the general method of defense is to just charge right at the ball and ignore the fake entirely, if they hit the ball over you, you hit them and your teammate gets the ball. If they 50 you the shot is over. If they fake they most likely can't get any more touches.

Mid Diamond here (3s, 2s). I've been working on these wall to air dribbles for a solid week (thanks to your original video and training pack) and have already seen huge improvement. Just started playing RL a year ago, old AF compared to most RL players (34), and have a kid. Your vids have been a huge help, and I still have a long way to go. I know I'm (literally) late to the game, but my goal is to at least hit GC. I get practice in 5-10min increments probably 3x throughout the day during working from home and then cram in a couple hours of training and ranked after my newborn falls asleep. Your explanations and delivery are great, and my guide - keep it up!!!!

I'm surprised people thought the glue would be better. My first thought was that it looks cleaner, but is very one dimensional. If you do the glue, an air dribble is all you can go for. I always liked dribble for more space to do plays and also if you dribble you can use speedflip or diagonal flip at start or even preflip to save boost if you learn how to angle your car before flipping for each situation. Glue still ain't useless cuz you can for example literally boost through the whole air dribble and you can start from dribble and then go for clue or other way around for long distance.

@@Osamu09i agree with everything wayton said but actually when u r rly good in air dribble (im not talking about ok tier like wayton) it becomes the most dangerous thing bc u can change the direction, the vertical momentum, stop in the air get a reset, get a plan b, go for a bump, or just fake

The play has potential, which makes it so scary to defend. Mechanics that allow for multiple opportunities, and therefore a lot of potential, at once is amazing for offense and terrible for defense. It’s why flip resets and double taps are so sought after along with air dribbles. The creativity on the fly also helps. Pun might be intended. I don’t know.

As an ssl myself I totally agree. That last touch on an air dribble can really bait ur opponent as it’s really unpredictable and I think it is very underrated and underused in lower ranks. I use this play a lot and I find that it works in my lobbies quite a lot of the time even against some pros. What makes it so successful is that the dribble also creates so many more opportunities with what you could do with the ball and I would say it is one of the most effective and basic plays in the entire game. Great video btw

Interestingly, I think freestyling has taught me to air-dribble like this and it comes from a very similar philosophy. When freestyling you want to stay in control while keeping your options open which is why the "dribble" air dribble is so OP. Every hard touch you get with the ball changes its momentum almost instantly, allowing one to theoretically air dribble forever, and the fact that it makes space between the car and the ball means that they can also go for a reset after every touch. For the longest time, I thought it was the opposite for ranked. Welp the more you know.

i consider myself a casual player (non mechanical) and over the years i’ve adapted small things like half flips and recently i noticed that i could potentially do this exact same thing! haven’t been able to score one yet but every time i try it, i get closer to the second hit. so cool that this random idea i was trying out turned out a mayor strategy that’s usually looked down on. might have to go on training for once instead of learning in matches like i always do :))))

Fantastic topic Wayton! I didn't watch the whole thing, but the explanation of Glue vs Dribble is on point. The "dribble" one is better and elevated my game just before I went from mid/high GC2 to SSL (not the only factor) a couple years ago. A friend was telling me that all the pros do air dribbles like this and I was stuck on trying to glue because of extended air dribbles (30 seconds and higher). I call it "gapping" instead of dribble, because you're deliberately making gaps. Took no time at all to change and only took And I do think it's easier to do, since you have more forgiving room for error.

Wow, I can't believe I never thought of this. Ground plays for me revolve a lot around bounce dribbles and less around normal dribbles or carries, yet I never thought about translating this to the air. The threat of bounce dribbles are the same thing, of potentially explosive power or changes in trajectory whenever the attacker chooses. In many times with a good bounce dribble you can simply watch the defender and change your play to their movement instead of just dribbling and flicking. In the air this incorporates the same thing of deciding how to form your final explosive touch before their net. Placing that last touch just out of their reach is the best way to finish an air dribble it seems, because faking into a flip reset or a deadly bump is just so much easier after doing this. Thank you for opening my eyes, because I've always been a strong ground player in 1s, but never figured out how to translate this into the air.
@ragegaze3482
@ragegaze3482 9 месяцев назад
true, but keep in mind it has the same weaknesses as bounce dribbles. Which is that it's weak against multiple opponenets, it takes a lot of space. Hence why most dribbling in 2s and 3s is just normal dribbling, 2 touch air dribbling is mostly effective against 1 defender, any more and it becomes unreliable.
@stanz47
@stanz47 9 месяцев назад
@@ragegaze3482 I’d disagree with the ground version. I think ground dribbles are great against two opponents since you can easily break into another option to beat the first usually. Plus depending on your option you have a lot of freedom to stay close to the ball compared to just catching and flicking which forces a flip and puts the ball away from you. I’d say in the air though you are right about this and it does lose control easier. Though I guess I’d have to test that compared to normal air drivvles

I have been using this way of airdribbling for years now and always wondered why so few people do it because it is like an easy version of a flip reset. Loved the way you're explaining it. There's just one more possibilty that I would've liked to see you cover: The Pass option. If you're playing 2v2 or 3v3, bait 1 or 2 defenders into going for the ball and then slam it into the backboard or to the side of the goal, giving your teammates a free shot. The only downside is that if your teammates commit with you, they are leaving an open net for your opponents

This video idea was something that I've been thinking about for a while with air dribbles. I'm c2 and spam all types of wall/ground air dribbles in freeplay to where doing them in game is not hard if I can get control of the ball. I scored two air dribbles in game two days ago within 20 seconds and my tm8 said he can't air dribble consistently yet lol but I hate doing only air dribbles now so I'll incorportate flip resets and double taps after a touch or two in the air and they work well in game 👌🏾

4:14 was glue and you counted it wrong to prove your incorrect thesis. Also this is very easy to save depending on the angle. If its from the corner, stay in the back of net it will always land back low, if it's above the next cross cut from wall as it's always high center, if it's mid field you already screwed up because you let them set up rather than killing the balls momentum BUT if this does happen, go tall and flat to counter the hit and call for backup OR tornado nose spin high and carry out like zen.

Flakes gave out these secrets in his roads to SSL back in 2019 and still barely anyone uses them effectively. It's all about that last touch in the air dribble. Its main purpose is to outplay anyone that challenges you. You can put the ball behind them in most situations and you'll likely score off of that alone as long as you recover well. The counter to this is to pick the best position where you can cover the entire net and just wait for that last touch from your opponent or until they're out of boost before you decide to go for the save. Even with this counter, it's still very difficult as you cannot allow the opponent to get too close to your net otherwise they'll score regardless. Edit: You can also always fake jump to bait out that last touch but just make sure that you're covering the net when doing so.
@ragegaze3482
@ragegaze3482 9 месяцев назад
100% correct, I think the main key imo is that you can't let them get that close in the first place. It literally doesn't matter what shot technique they are doing it's dangerous if you let them into your box. That's why I think rocket league defense is a system based around 2 people, if you don't have 2 defenders the attacker always has the advantage.

I generally go up early and try to track the ball further from net to deal with someone using these... You can read the first or second touch before they get oriented. As only a D1 my best hope is to prevent my opponent from setting this up properly by applying a reasonable amount of pressure as soon as I see them go up the wall. I try to angle my car so I can boost laterally in any direction with my belly exposed and catch the ball more than striking it. It is surprisingly helpful on some players much better than me. Risky, but better than getting abused. YMMV because I have a very weird playstyle.

The biggest issue is properly getting a setup in a real game. I've found that often times it's best to consider the first touch off the wall being done for you. It's very rare that it just rolls up perfectly or you're allowed to set it up by opponents (or sometimes your own teammate). Most of the time your setup in a live match will be an awkward bounce up and off the wall. Stop lower than the ball, leave the wall, and fly out straight. Generally, that'll get you to that "second" touch if the ball is already away from the wall.

All diamonds can hit the ball off the wall and touch it into the net atleast once out of 20 tries. A decent bit of diamonds can hit the ball of the wall and "push" the ball in the net. Almost 0 diamonds can Air Dribble.

So... as a player since 2016(have a YT vid of one of the first BioHazard crate unlocks)... You're right!!!! Back in the day the glue was considered better because it was "more complicated" kind of like flicks were OP. Now it's bounce dribbles and dribbles and flip resets and being unpredictable WITH options.

(Before watching the video) I think it's really effective because, compared to the glue, it's really unlinear, so it's way harder to read the trajectory then if you were to do the glue

Ngl I use the heavy touch air dribble often It’s oddly satisfying watching the ball go over the opponent as they try to predict where the ball goes

With "glue" you can still manage your boost to accelerate the air dribble when the opponent challenges. Both ways are viable in any rank.

@@luismvg11 I do not mean consistent acceleration. You can air dribble at a slow speed until they challenge, and then accelerate up. I could score it on you if you need.
@ragegaze3482
@ragegaze3482 9 месяцев назад
@@luismvg11it doesn't matter, even if they know it's going to happen it still will go over them, or worst case scenario you 50/50 and your teammate picks up the ball and you lose nothing from attempting. If you air dribble with space then they are prone to prejump you, in which if they make contact with the ball, your 50 is garbage. If you outplay them, their teammate will pickup the ball for free since you normally only get 1 outplay touch. That's the inherent risk to 2 touch air dribbles.
@luismvg11
@luismvg11 9 месяцев назад
@@ragegaze3482 you are right but you are forgetting about boost management, you dont need that much boost to air dribble with 2/3 touches. The glue requires a lot more because you are carrying the ball the whole time. While I agree that 50/50 are most likely to go wrong, the potential and options are endless.
