Really useful Jeff, just migrating to new machine, and might as well get it right from the start. This has really helped thank you

As well as the street, I shoot landscape and wildlife. I can shoot up to 4000 45mp (Nikon Z8) in a day. My PC is pretty powerful, but the only way to review so many photos quickly is by importing as 'embedded and sidecar.' I would typically aim to keep less than 50 shots. Yesterday in Bournemouth, I took about 300 street photos ( yes, I use burst and shoot from the hip, not exclusively) again, importing with 'embedded and sidecar'. Lightroom will build standard previews when in idle.

I’m a great believer in photographers finding the methods which work for them. Most of my Mac user friends who need to see images quickly tend to use PhotoMechanic. It reads the embedded jpeg like LR, but it’s a lot faster.

Thank you. I really appreciate your content. It’s one of the very few high-quality channels dedicated to photography on RU-vid. Most other channels are filled with clickbaity gear reviews or mediocre photography.

I recently opted for a Mac Studio, the base M2 Max one at sniff over £2k - probably overkill for photo editing, but love it never the less. For external SSD connection the cable matters massively for speed - you can't just use any old USB-C cable, I have a cheap thunderbolt alternative that give me 800 MB/s RW - still much slower than Studio on board SSD

You are making great content! Only one like and one subscription allowed, but those are automatic here. I wish you would talk about how you physically handle original files. We keep them, so we obviously believe we might have to go to them occasionally. But organizing them so that you can find them is always a struggle. Just as important is having a system that isn't time consuming. I am pretty comfortable with your approach to a lot of things, so I would just like to know how you organize and store originals.

On the hard drives, we organise the files by photographer and date. That's pretty much it. Within LR, we make collections based on location, subject and ratings. Any images we like get edited and exported as TIFF files. These are then uploaded to a NAS. These are what I tend to reference the most when I'm looking for images for clients, or for videos etc. It's easier and quicker than going through old RAW files.

sorry I didnt get the storage part. you have two external HDs, one SSD one slow USB? and when importing files you copy on both? The library to edit the images etc is on SSD for faster performance but the original files are on USB HD as a back ups? am I getting this right?

Two identical USB/C mechanical drives for original images (one as backup). One Tbolt 4 drive for catalog and cache.

You turned save to XMP off but never explained why. I see it as an advantage to have all of my (DNG) files synced with the settings I have made to them.
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice Месяц назад
Automatically writing XMP to the files takes up resources and can slow LR down particularly if you batch process images, such as for a wedding or event. Whenever you make an adjustment, LR will write each change to the sidecar file. To me, anything that is unnecessary and takes up resources, no matter how small, should be switched off. There is an argument that saving XMP data with original files can help if a catalog becomes corrupted, but if you backup your catalog at regular intervals, this is a moot point.
