My Mac Studio and Studio Display finally arrived, and it was high time I got rid of my 2013 Mac Pro and the 4K Dell display that was serving as my main monitor in my edit bay. Would the Studio Display connect to my THREE Promise Pegasus RAID arrays? Would my old Apple Thunderbolt Displays play nicely with the Mac Studio? How many Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapters would I need to complete this swap out?
Annnnnnd... What's the fate of my 2013 Mac Pro?

Can I easily swap out my 2013 Mac Pro with my Mac Studio? How many $50 Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapters will it take??? How did setting up YOUR new Mac Studio go?

Hi Mathew, nice video and we appreciate the "real" way you do address things, not crazy bench marks and theoretical approaches but practical, real life user experience! I'm curious to know about the smoothness of the daily work with all those monitors and Mac Studio since we do experience a lot of performance loss in other machines, when we connect multiple monitors... Yes we do have bigger issues in Davinci Resolve rather than FCPX but there are things we can't escape from in Resolve, compared with FCPX :( so we need to use it. Could you tell us your specs on both MacPro and MacStudio and what are your real life experiences now, with realtime playback, heavy grades or effects? Thanks!!

With just a 8TB Raid Storage in total, and TB2, you might as well invest in a newer and higher capacity-ed NAS via 10GB connection or a TB3/4 DAS. It just make no more sense to have all those devices around and pay hundreds in adapter

A day off is definitely in order to wire our desks. Last time I did mine it took about a day - the routing of cables from my entertainment center (TV, Receiver, AppleTV, etc.) to the edit bay took forever, but it's nice to be able to send my A/V Output to the big TV to watch edits. This doesn't happen often, but I hope to do it more with future projects. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses a level to get their displays just right! Haha. Thanks for watching, Marcos!

Haha - thanks! My buddy DJ and I made it ourselves out of 2x10 inch boards from Home Depot. I wanted a monitor riser built in because (at the time) all of my monitors were on their stands - when I was an Apple Support advisor for Apple they taught us all the right ways to have your desk and computer set up for ergonomics. The riser has been great for having that USB hub mounted under it - on either end I have an under-mountable surge protector with three outlets and two USB-A charging ports. The steel pipe I used for the legs and the riser came from Menard's because they were significantly less expensive there compared to Home Depot. Under the desk (you can see in the shot of my Promise Pegasus RAIDs) I have a 2x6 inch board spanning the entire length of the back of the desk. I installed two shelves on that - one to hold my 2013 Mac Pro and another to hold my Behringer Sound Mixer. The iPad Minis are mounted using Mob Armor magnet mount. These are adjustable so I can get the tilt just right. And then I have the Blue Compass microphone boom arm and Rode NTG2 mic on the desk so I can record voiceovers, take Zoom calls, etc. The studio monitors are just Mackie 3" monitors - I think they were around $100. Would love to upgrade these to some Yamaha 5" monitors, but I keep borrowing money to buy expensive Apple products instead!

Thank you, so much for sharing this very useful information. Planning to connect a "Mac Studio" to an Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display but, thought you might need to start by using a thunderbolt 4 adapter to a thunderbolt 3 adapter. Question, did your "Mac Studio's" rear thunderbolt 4 ports accept a thunderbolt 3 adapter?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Cool! I have a 27" Cinema Display as well and my wife uses it with her 2013 13" MacBook Pro. Still works great! Now because that display is mini-display port and NOT Thunderbolt, I'm not sure if Apple's Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter will transfer the signal from the computer to the monitor. I might test it here in the hour or so with my new laptop to see if that's true. Now my 27" Thunderbolt Displays did connect to the Mac Studio - I had to use Apple's $50 Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter to do so and EACH monitor needed its own adapter and each monitor had to be connected to its own Thunderbolt 4 port on the back of the Mac Studio.
@alejmc
@alejmc 2 года назад
@@matthewTobrien really? I currently have an iMac with the TB3 to TB2 adapter to a Thunderbolt Display that has another Thunderbolt Display chained to it. So, cables-wise it’s: iMac TB display TB display. Was nevertheless a tad disappointed with the Studio Display not having any daisy chaining capabilities at all though. Regarding cinema displays, Thunderbolt connections are supposed to be compatibles with absolutely all of that… actual TB connection, DisplayPort, USB-C transfer, etc.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I couldn't daisy chain them because they're too far apart. The built-in cable can't reach the other display, and I didn't want to run a long TB cable between them. Good to know about the Cinema Display's Mini-Display Port info - I vaguely recall a friend not being able to get a Cinema Display to connect to Thunderbolt 3 on their MacBook Pro using Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. They had to buy a 3rd party adapter to make it work. I'd have to double-check, though.

Hey Matthew. Enjoyed your Set-up video. I too rewired and reconfigured my world. My previous system was a MacPro trash can and twin 30’ Cinema Displays. Yes, 17 year old CD. Still working great. But now jumped to a Mac Studio Ultra and twin Studio Displays. Very nice set-up. Everything is working great. My question to you is, what is the software you are using on your iPad for mixing. I have used the Avid Artist Mix. Works great. But I am intrigued by your mixing solution. Enjoy your new editorial set-up. Looks cool. Best, Billy Fox

@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Год назад
As a secondary monitor I think it's fine! 1440p is still pretty high res, and the images on the display still look pretty darn good. I think the only issue I have is that the color is different between both of my Thunderbolt Displays, especially in comparison to the Studio Display. Thunderbolt Displays are much warmer and a little inconsistent across the panel and the monitor itself is incredibly heavy. I really like how light and compact the Studio Display is in comparison.

As of now, I'm not sure what I'd connect to it... All 4 TB ports on the Mac Studio are being used, and I don't have any other peripherals I need to connect. Maybe if I got another RAID... @matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Final Cut Pro allows for a third display to act as a full-screen preview of what you're editing using their A/V Output feature: apple.co/36v3CWW For most users the monitor needs to be connected via HDMI (there are other ways to get it to work but it requires a video I/O interface). And yes, the display on the right has Safari, Messages, Twitter, notes/scripts for my edits, Notion, etc. so I don't have to switch out of FCP to do other stuff. Thanks for watching!

@@matthewTobrien That's not true, you don't need a HDMI connection for the A/V output in FCPX. I have a 27' Apple Thunderbolt Display connected for A/V output, via thunderbolt, the same that you have here on both sides. But you have to scale the displays either to HD or 4k. (1080 or 2160), otherwise FCPX will not recognize displays for A/V output. That's a shame, because Davinci and Premiere will recognize every display you throw in. So I think your 4th display is a little bit overkill, because you could use either the right or left display for preview in FCPX.

If you mean the app I use to get sound effects, I use a combination of Final Cut Pro's stock library, my own stock library, and sound effects from Uppbeat. If you mean the app that's on my iPad - I use a combination of my Behringer XAir XR-18 mixer with iPad app and Audio Hijack. Mac Studio is doing great! And sorry to hear about your top monitor getting damaged - you definitely need to be careful with those setups and possibly get help doing it! And yes, I use Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old Mac to my new Mac. Just be sure to connect the computers with a Thunderbolt cable because the transfer is waaaaay faster. You don't want to do it over wi-fi.
@alejmc
@alejmc 2 года назад
Was going to ask about the sound app too! since macOS doesn’t have still built-in per-app sound mixer. Was looking into SoundSource and BackgroundMusic to get something started but the issue with all of these things is that the actual ‘output’ selection has to be their own provided virtual device hence it tends to not work with system wide shortcuts like sound up/down/mute buttons from the keyboards. One note regarding the macOS migration assistant (had to do some early this year), I found myself having to do one without cables to connect, turns out the WiFi version doesn’t actually go through the router but it connects ad-hoc directly, the transfer rates weren’t that bad! Granted, about 300GB of migration data took about a bit over an hour than mere minutes but it wasn’t ‘days’ at least.

You know your stuff! Yes, the wi-fi isn't terrible, but if you can connect with Thunderbolt it's crazy fast. I did buy SoundSource for my laptop so I could control the sound levels for individual apps. The problem is, though, that on new computers you have to downgrade your security settings and that means you can't use Apple Pay on your computer. I wish Apple would just beef up their sound controls so we didn't have to deal with this kind of thing to use our "Pro" computers like pros like to use them - total control.

Are you planning to permanently keep the old MacPro for your streaming? I'm wondering if it's worth trading into apple for $1k credit or the hassle of selling it on ebay for $1500ish?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I don't think I can get $1k with a trade-in to Apple or $1500 on eBay. When I looked at resale values a few weeks ago on eBay I saw prices around $600 for my particular model (the base model Mac Pro). What I might do is still sell it at that price and get an M1 Mac Mini for streaming...

Just subscribed! I’ve been enjoying your videos esp now the journey from the 2013 Mac Pro to the Studio. I’m looking for some advice on that same path - I have video editing experience and I’ve been wanting to start turning it into an income stream on top of my full time career as an aerospace engineer by doing freelance editing on fiverr and making some RU-vid product review content. I’d likely be very much in a startup phase for a while but I’d eventually like to earn an extra $1000 or so a month. I was able to buy a 8-core/16GB RAM/256GB SSD/D700 2013 Mac Pro for only $600 off of FB Marketplace in great shape that runs without issue and passed all checks at the Apple Store. I think I could reasonably flip this for north of $1400 esp if I upgraded the RAM and/or SSD for a few hundred more. Do you think it would be worth it to do so and then put that towards a base level Mac Studio, or just start with what I have? I’m not necessarily on a shoestring budget but looking at it from an ROI standpoint. I also have a 2018 i5 Mac Mini that could net me ~$400 or so.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
Welcome to the channel, Adam! And I think that's awesome that you're looking to start creating content and build up a side hustle for video editing. 🤘🏻 Here are my biggest issues with forging ahead on a 2013 Mac Pro: 1. Not sure how many more updates you'll be able to do to macOS before you can't anymore 2. Exporting a 4K H.264 video that's in the 8 - 12 min long range for RU-vid takes my base model Mac Pro sometimes close to THREE HOURS whereas my Mac Studio can do the same thing in, what, 5 minutes? 10? (I haven't tested yet). 3. Playback of 4K H.264 footage from a Canon or Sony mirrorless camera (especially if you shoot Sony and the footage is 10-bit) will be next to impossible. If you shot everything in 1080? You'd probably be fine. I'm honestly not sure what the prices are for used 2013 Mac Pros right now - with these new Mac Studios coming out I have to imagine trashcan owners like me have flooded eBay with their used machines and that may be affecting resale value. I'm seeing prices between $600 and $1800 for D700 units (not sure how many CPU cores yours has). Is it worth it to upgrade it before selling? I don't know that you get that money back. Personally, I probably wouldn't but do your research to see if there's good ROI there. And keep in mind that RU-vid is a loooooong game. I've been doing it for 4 yrs, the last 2 yrs pretty seriously. In a good month I'll make around $1k from AdSense, Affiliate Sales, etc. Just be prepared to have to work at it for a long time to build an audience, get monetized, and then developing additional streams of revenue from that audience. It's a grind, but it can be done and it's INCREDIBLY fulfilling. I've got a vid up from a few months ago going into detail how much I made all of last year on RU-vid with 14k subscribers. Check it out!

@@matthewTobrien thank you! Yeah, I pretty much saw owning this 2013 Mac Pro as a detour to appreciate the design of it in person for a bit and then hopefully flip it. The trade-in value for it currently at Apple is $800 (down recently from $820) so worst case I only profit $200, but I’ll put it online as-is for a few days to see if it can do better. Thanks for all of the RU-vid advice as well! That video was very helpful esp for putting my expectations in check.

I bought the Mac studio and it's a nightmare. It doesn't detect the 2 monitors most of the time (Dell and Asus displays), I cannot install 3rd party sound libraries, because this is for security reasons not allowed according to East West support. But the biggest nightmare was that after I used Migration Assistant to transfer data and apps from the old Mac to this new one, my 3 external harddrives became crippled. They are non responsive, do not show up on the screen anymore or in Disk Utility or any kind of software recovery app. They just died. Only showing a blinking light. All my music projects, Filemaker projects, video projects and sound libraries were on these hard drives. Did I use Time Machine? Yes, that was one one of these Hard Drives which was also crippled. I regret it extremely that I ever got this Mac Studio.

Gotta give some credit to Apple. This is a surprisingly not hyper-expensive machine. With the student discount (Haha, College benefits!), it's less than half the price of the LOWEST Mac Pro, and honestly, more suited for what I need (Just a machine to code for my school stuff and edit for my hobby stuff, that can actually FIT in my dorm room). Honestly the part that's keeping me away from it is knowing I'll have to buy ANOTHER license to all my software like FCP and Compressor, even though if I got this I'd likely never use my MacBook Pro for editing ever again, it'd become an exclusively coding/word processing machine at that point. Wish I could just transfer the licenses, I really don't want to drop another $200 on another Education Bundle.

What apps are you using that are running slowly? A good friend has the top of the line M1 Ultra and is producing screen content for live tours using FCP, Cinema4D, After Effects, Motion, etc. and he's struggling to make the computer run slowly. Have you checked to see if the apps you're using for your design work are optimized for Apple Silicon? A lot of specialty apps are relying on Rosetta to run on M-powered Macs and if you're using several of them I could see your computer struggling to manage all that. It might be an issue with the app, not the Mac. I haven't seen my base M1 Max Mac Studio run slowly at all when using Final Cut Pro, Affinity Designer/Photo, Photos, etc.

@@matthewTobrien Thanks for the reply. I'm using Adobe Suite as tools for my work, such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effect. But the issue is that, even if I'm into an external hard disk (searching for files), the mac runs slow, extremelly laggy, can't keep it like that. There are two reasons here: 1. either I bought a defectous mac 2. either mac is a shit - only marketing. I have installed Rosetta for my mouse (steelseries engine) other than that, I have no apps running on Rosetta (or I'm not aware of something...) I remember, when I first installed Rosetta, the mac freezed for a couple of minutes, not sure what happened.

One thing you can do to troubleshoot this is to create a temporary user account and try to work from there for a few hours to see if the slowdown issues happen there. That will determine if the issue is user-specific or system wide and help you better ascertain what the root cause is. I'd also recommend contacting Apple Support if you can. If you're in the US you can call 1-800-MY-APPLE. If you've done the temp user account step it'll help you if the first adviser you speak to needs to bump you up to a senior adviser.
