In this video I share how I setup my Etchr Slate Mini for watercolor, gouache and drawing outside. I'll show you the ways I customize it for maximum stability and efficiency.
After many months of experimentation, I finally figured out how I like to use it. I use a few custom tools, which are mainly just cheap magnets and clips! Check out my blog post for more layout ideas and supplies.
This is currently my favorite plein air setup. Feel free to comment with suggestions or new ways of customizing that I haven't thought of!

I think you got it covered girl! Etchr needs to pick up on all of your brilliant ideas,…. And pay you! For real! I bought some of those magnets at CVS pharmacy, 6 in a pack for $2.00. I also love your idea in your other video, that the two “sides” could be separated. It’s great how you tied it off though! Thx for the ideas! By the way, freezing in Atlanta, Ga. And very rainy. Weather a lot like Scotland sounds like. My yard is full of trees, moss and a small lake. So I feel very blessed during this COVID time. My house…..still MESSY! Lol.. 👍🙏🏻❤️🖌👩🏻‍🎨

I absolutely love seeing art "set ups!" Thanks so much for showing us what you are using -- makes me want to go shopping - ha. Plein air is something I have always struggled with. I had a good set up years ago, but it was so cumbersome for me to handle then and I know that I wouldn't be able to now (at 69 yrs old). So, I have simplified greatly and have found that I am more apt to "just do it" because it isn't an effort to take along. I use a pencil pouch (standard school supply) that contains, 3 water brushes (various sizes), WN Cotman watercolor pocket palette, small spray bottle, cotton tee shirt rags (cut very small), pencil, eraser, ink pen, white gel pen. I use a Stillman & Birn Sketchbook. I pack these two tools in a small tote bag or in a small/lightweight backpack (the kind with draw strings that also form the shoulder straps).

Loved seeing this setup! Your use of magnets is really clever, and that portable seat looks so convenient! I have the same metal water cups :D As far as travel flat brushes go, I have an Escoda one from their black travel brush set. There's also a red, blue and green set, and the green also has a flat. I really enjoy it! It's a straighter flat once the brush shaping fluid is off, not a kind of rounded in one like it looks in the photos, and it's around 3/8" I think. It doesn't come individually though, so there's also the Pro Arte Prolene Plus flat travel brush, which I haven't tried.

Hi Sarah, a very informative video of your setup thank you and heaps of useful tips, I have wondered why etchr don't make a sketchbook that is spiral bound. As you demonstrated in your video, that by using a spiral sketchbook, it allows a more easy straightforward way to everything you need like water and paint . Because they only make hard cover sketchbooks, to fit everything within east access like you did, the cover would be hanging over the side, so if it was windy, you could have the cover slam shut on what you are working on. It's only a little thing I guess, I really do like your setup though.

Hi Sarah, there’s a nice flat travel brush I bought from Rosemary and Co, but I believe it is sable. I normally use synthetics for my gouache work because they’re stiffer and don’t hold on to too much water. Just my preference. I usually use my sables for watercolor. Escoda and Raphael both make synthetic flat travel brushes, but I can’t remember the size. I don’t own them but I’d like to try them. I’m curious if that is heavy. I did a review for them on the large one many years ago before they made the mini. It was so freaking heavy. I think without supplies it was like 7.5 lbs or something ridiculous like that, and there were so many sides and pockets and straps and tons of Velcro pieces, that I’d get all set up and realize that something I needed was on the opposite side so I’d have to undo my set up to flip it over and it was just way to cumbersome. This looks much nicer but I’m curious about the weight.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 2 года назад
I just weighed it, and with my toned paper spiral sketchbook, the water container, all the brushes and pens I showed, and my portable painter micro, the whole thing weighs 4.4 lb. When I wear it around my shoulder it feels super light, it's lighter than taking my backpack...but maybe that's because if you give me room, I'll fill it! LOL so the limited space means I pack efficiently and go out with a focus.

So I paint, and also adore nature, so I make it a point to know a few survival skills, because I am a bit adventurous, and I could easily follow a butterfly 🦋 into the unknown. Anyhow Les Stroud has an amazing set up for sitting. With a peice of leather that is attached at the belt area, and hangs over the bum area. It's always there, and so he can sit anywhere, instead of having to carry that awkward folding mat. I'm sure that a bum size synthetic waterproof thermal material could be fashioned into something similar. I don't do video but he also has some amazing tips for solo filming as well.

DaVinci Casaneo has a flat travel brush! (As well as an angled one, a liner brush and a fairly large sized mop brush - for a travel version. Jackson's doesn't carry the liner brush, last I checked, but they have the others.) And just throwing another brush tip out there, the Tintoretto synthetic travel mop brushes are amazing (they are smaller than the Casaneo)!! 😍 And thank you for showing us your setup!!

I've been trying to answer on and off all day, I'm having such difficulties with my RU-vid comments lately, don't know what's up with that. 🤦 Since I have barely begun using gouache I experimented a bit with different brushes after your comment. I would say it's on the softer side, but works great on a smooth surface, it's a bit harder to get a bold stroke on textured paper but it still looks nice to me. It's hard to tell what's too soft for you though! I compared it with a Silver Black Velvet flat brush, which is softer and holds much more water, and is more difficult to get a bold stroke with. I also compared it with a Joe Miller Pseudo Sable flat brush, which is decidedly harder and holds less water, it worked well on a textured paper but started to show streaks on a smoother paper. So I'd say the Casaneo might be worth trying out? Perhaps you have tried one of the brushes I compared it to and it might help you get an idea? I hope this helped! ☺️

Hi, Sarah! Thanks for the video. It was good to see it set up in real time, with how you've resolved things to suit your methods. I have my kit pretty much as I want it, except for the problem of holding paints etc when using A6 size minimum kit . I have a bumbag (I think that's 'fanny bag' in the USA?) which takes everything, and a small off-cut for a drawing board. Those magnetic bulldog clips have now solved problem, I think, so here's a question: what size are those you're using, please? BTW, my 'sitting on the ground / wet benches' solution is a large-ish thick garden bin bag with a baby's buggy quilt inside it! It rolls up to about the same size as your thermal pad, but when unrolled, is large enough to keep my legs dry, too. If I'm sitting out under my big fisherman's brolly (for essential shade as well as rain), using full set-up, it's also useful to cover my legs & feet if it begins to rain. I've used it for years to keep the necessary parts of me dry and warm.

All the supplies I use are listed in the blog post :) I do also have a super thin tarp I sometimes bring (It folds down to a size of "travel tissues") - I usually only bring that if I'm going to the beach or if it's not windy

@@SarahBurnsStudio Sarah, oops! I looked at the Uk Amazon link and didn't see it, because I used it to find out what to put in on Amazon France. I've just scrolled right through to the end of the very small print on the UK site (it's the very last paragraph!) and found it. A tarp that folds to 'travel tissues'? Wow!

Magnets and clips are an artist's best friend! I was really hoping we'd get a review of your new gouache pallete soon but I'll ask just one q- is it really leakproof? (And I'm also wondering how it compares to the Turner pallete u had before, whether it's better? Bc ik you got rid of that one partly bc you were moving towards limited palletes for gouache. If you ever decide to review it, I hope you'll answer those questions! I think I'll eventually buy one but not for a while. I have a q about this set up. If your painting is still wet and you have to pack up to leave, does the pack allow space for drying? Ik most pochade boxes have this perk but I'm curious whether this 'soft' pochade has that feature. Thank you and really looking forward to seeing this in action as thevweather gets warmer!

I will do a video about my gouache travel palette when the weather gets a little better :) But yes it's leak proof and so perfect for me. No there's not a "slot" for drying paintings in this setup.

HI again, Sarah. A practical question (or two!): Do you find that you need to compensate for the weight of the flap of the bag hanging down on your left (ie with or without tripod) , or does the sketchbook balance it out? Also, does the weight of the whole kit, when standing to draw / paint without the tripod cause any issues? After watching this video two weeks ago, I've played quite a bit with ideas to go 'hands free', not with the bag, but just the drawing board set up, because it will do a lot to resolve the (new for me!) issue of urban painting and needing to move quickly out of the way. After finally finding the soft leather guitar strap I want to use as the shoulder strap (in the drawer of my sewing box!!!), I've tested the pre-proto-type. Not bad, but I still need to fine-tune it. That is, I need to go to the local hardware store to try to find the small bits which I need to finalise it ( *tiny* nuts to go on the ends of the small attaching rings and *small* carabiners to attach the strap).
@SarahBurnsStudio

No this doesn’t have issues when the lid hands down, mainly because my tripod is sturdy, and when I’m standing it’s even more stable because it can be folded under and clipped in place so it’s not hanging. Even fully loaded the whole thing is about 4.3 lbs

Thank you Sarah, that is so useful. I was wondering about your tripod. I know you are a keen photographer so is your tripod from your photography kit? I have two - one is a cheap but slightly heavy “amazon” tripod that someone gifted me, and then I have my lightweight SIRUI AM-225 I prefer the lightweight one if I’m hiking, but if I’m ‘car painting’ not walking far from the car, I use the heavier one because it’s more stable.

Hi Sarah! Great video as always, but I was wondering if it's worth the extra $9 (here in the states) to get the regular size Etchr Slate (15 in x 12 in x 3 in.)? It isn't as expensive as the Satchel, which would be way too heavy for me.
@SarahBurnsStudio

Mine is the Slate Mini satchel and it’s the only one I have experience with. You might want to ask someone who has tried the other ones
@SUSSDUE
@SUSSDUE 2 года назад
The big art satche IS heavy! I have it and it is very useful if you travel and want to bring half the studio and either sit at a table or sit w it in your lap. But to use it standing it is far too heavy for me, for using it standing w thestraps over your shoulders you have to be a big muscular guy 😉. My husband has the normal Slate and it is ok, but now when I finally have got myself a Slate Mini I have to say that it is a perfect size unless you want to work bigger than A4. Neither of the Slates are lightweight ( but neither is as heavy as the Art Satchel) so if weight is important I would suggest go for the Mini. I also think the smaller size is better, at least for me, because I will not be tempted to bring stuff ” just in case” and carry around things I might not use when out sketching. It still has a lot of space for art materials! One thing that is good w the Art Satchel is that it is easy to attach a tripod or other stuff on the front with the ” molle” attachments ( some kind of military phrase for attaching different bags to each other)-I think the youtuber The Mind of Watercolor has a good review where he shows that system w the Satchel. The Slates does not have that option so you have to find another way to carry tripods or other extra stuff you want to bring. Oh yes another good option w the Art Satchel is that you can carry it as a backpack and ease the strain on your shoulders. I actually plan to take the Art Satchel straps and use them to carry the Mini as a backpack. It will be a bit more hassle to quckly bring it into skeching mode but it will be better for my shoulders and back. The Satchel straps are also better padded than the ones on the Slates. But that is only an option if you have both Satchel and Slate, the strap on the Slate has a nice removable pad on it that is absolutely allright to use!
