hello Neil ... that fractal comes with two more accessories ... maintains the same technique and for light day applies ... Thank you for your knowledge ... greetings from cali-colombia.
Hi Neil would using or having the use of hss made the image any better or have an advantage? Also where did you get the fractal glass from, tried Amazon and e bay I must be searching using the wrong description!
Hi Nigel, no HSS wouldn't have made any difference to this shot. If you are based in the UK, the UK supplier is called Rigu - please let them know I sent you 😊
Thanks, Neil, for another great video! I might add though that on a real wedding, I have mostly found the couple not to have a lot of patience, so once you do this on a real wedding I think one should have been training a lot to make it as quick as possible. I would die of stress if I would try this on a next wedding without practice. Thanks for the creative ideas though!! Your videos are very well made and you are a good teacher.
Thank you very much Manuel :-) Yes, you are right, it isn't easy to do this at a wedding but it's definitely possible with practice as the more you practice shots like this, assuming you set up before calling over the bride and groom, can be done in literally seconds. It's all about practicing the technique first though to give you confidence. Thank you so much again :)
Where do you get a fractal filter.? P.S: I'm from Romania and I don't know where I could find something like this or something like fractal filter, this is AMAZING 😍!
Great video! This kind of tips made me subscribe to your channel and I'm glad that I did. Keep doing this! From where did you bought that fractal glass?
Thank you Tony! No, I use the Samyang 35mm 1.4, half the price and virtually no difference in quality, only downside is the Samyang isn't weather sealed
Yet another inspiring video from Neil ! Thank you so much. Whoever was doing the video work did a great job. Your explanation and video footage goes well together. Kudos to your team 😊
It depends on where you shoot the wedding and your ability to kill the ambient light but, it's a secret weapon you want to have in your backpack! Such an amazing video thank you :))
I'm so amazed at how you break down your amazing techniques so wonderfully! They are all gems! & thank you for the links to the fractals. I was just going to ask where to get my hands on one of them.
Nice one! Just one question: When you were setting the diameter of the red spot, would using the speedlight’s zoom have worked as well as moving the light stand fore & aft?
Thank you Peter! Good question but no, the zoom has virtually no effect when you are using a grid as the grid narrows the light much more than the zoom could
Thank you Sol, I'm really pleased my videos are inspiring you to try similar shots! That's great to hear :) Yes, the fractals are from here: www.getfractals.com/
Neil... great video. I recently came across your channel and have found your advice really useful. The one thing I’ve always struggled with is creative off camera flash, but broken down simply as you do it all seems to click. The one challenge i sometimes find is nailing the focus when staging the shot in dark conditions... any tip on this would be hugely useful. Thanks for sharing... 👍🏻
Thank you very much Ross, I really appreciate that. Yes, you're not on your own, lots of photographers see flash as being scary and difficult but when you bring it all back to basics it can become much easier and hopefully I can show that in my videos. You're totally right about the focus too, a good tip is to give the person you're shooting a phone with the torch turned on, ask them to light themselves so you can get focus, then ask them to hide it away. Or do as I did here and use a Sony - which absolutely nails the focus every time and much more reliable than my Nikon
Neil, thanks so much. I think the problem I find is trying to do too much or multiple shots and then putting time pressure on things. Keeping it simple and planning one or two really good shots is definitely the way forward I think. As for Sony, I’ve been toying with the idea of switching for a while, but have so much £ tied up in all my Canon gear... maybe it’s inevitable though!
I totally agree Ross. I will only try one "creative" shot like this per wedding usually and the couple know that I'm basically playing around. I only take these images once I know I have enough "safe" shots. And yes, that is exactly how I was with Sony for a long time, but then I tried one and it was game over.....! Haha
New follower, I found you this week and been going through your old videos. Thank you for sharing your informative & creative photography and look forward to future uploads.
No default but it's probably on 85mm most of the time. You may as well zoom the flash in when using the grid because when you use a grid the zoom makes no difference to the final result
