They say "those who can't do teach" - don't take that to mean that everyone who teaches, can't do though. Rick has proven that he can, and I think there is a point to prove that. Though to me Ricks enthusiasm is enough. Those "who can't do" are not usually as enthusiastic about their subject.

Exactly, Rick seem to be down do earth and knowledgeable person, I’ll swallow any video he puts out there. Very much of the music he talks about isn't even within my interest because I play acoustic blues and country, I'm snowed in the 30-40's haha. But he always gets that Beato angle to things, and that's it.

My wife and I used "I'll follow you" by shinedown for the bride and groom dance at our wedding in 2020 because shinedown is one of my favorite bands and she also loved the song. Brent has one of the most incredible singing voices in rock history hands down. I'll always be a shinedown fan. It's awesome that you got to work with him on their first album

Ricky you said you did the "demo" work for these songs, but you are very skilled engineer and producer. Can you do a video on what is the difference between a good demo and a great industry standard finished song? What take a song to the next level as far as engineering and mixing?

There are so few tutorials out there regarding this for Rock/Guitar stuff. If you’re producing EDM tracks the world is your oyster but say you wanted to make a grunge style song, good luck mixing that to industry standard at home watching RU-vid videos

hey Rick, I've always loved the channel. Just something to make you smile. When my buddy and I recorded our first vinyl album (things that need to be said) three years ago we sold 5 copies. I have the master metal disk on my wall above my computer and it says.. :certified nickel 2015. We loved it then and we love it now. For an old guy like me, pride comes from things I should not have tried... but I did. and it worked.

Shinedown was actually the headliner for the first concert I ever attended back in 08. They were so great live and Brent’s voice is incredibly powerful

That's all? They have tons of KILLER songs. Also live they're ridiculously good. I almost like them live more because they don't have as much of the over-produced nonsense. It's mostly just guitar bass drums n vocals (and piano on select songs) without so many of the samples and claps and snyth stuff and whatever. Suffice it to say, they're the real deal live.

when "fly from the inside" had come out on the radio, I thought I heard a twinge of an Alice In Chains sound. since AIC is in my top 5 all-time bands, I bought that Shinedown record. they eventually kinda got too radio/commercial sounding for my taste, but "lost in the crowd" was the track I liked off the initial record I have. now that I know Rick co-wrote it, I like it even more.

A person who knows a bit about music will recognize his legitimacy in his clips. Someone who doesn't might be the type of person who assumes everyone on the internet is a hack. While most are, there are a few genuine authorities like Rick here. There's a reason he has the amount of followers he does, people recognize the real deal.

That's the difference between skepticism and obstinance. You should absolutely be skeptical of anyone claiming to be an authority on something, but a willingness to hear someone out allows you to distinguish for yourself if they're claim is valid or not. Obstinance and close-mindedness causes people to miss out on a lot of good things they could learn from people.

Too many youngsters these days don't realise that it's age & experience that is needed TOGETHER with youth and enthusiasm. Young minds fire crazily in all directions and it's the older heads that steer these kids & reign in, tune in & lock in the better ideas to make successful records. Same here. In 2004/5 that album was very influencing in my life!! I was 24 when that album went platinum. Lost in the crowd is a great song as is the entire album. Randomly on the radio I heard their version of simple man and I was somewhere in East Alabama. I live in Atlanta and lived in the NW suburbs of Atlanta my whole life. I am pretty sure what I heard that day when I heard simple man was a replay of the live radio station performance you speak of from Boston. It was replayed on the radio station I was listening to. Being a huge skynyrd fan heating their version of simple man, I was blown away!!. I love the original but I think that their version is as good and better in ways. Is like the disturbed version of sounds of silence, the original is amazing but the disturbed version is also amazing!!

Shinedown came to Chico CA about 10 or 11 years ago and the power went out to the PA a bunch of times. Finally, Dude put down his mike and started belting out his tunes, filling the Senator Theater with perfect sound. It was astounding, gives me chills to this day! By the way Rick, I have really learned a lot from you man-thank you!

Fascinating, great story. It really illustrates how it takes more than talent, dedication and commitment to become a household name. I think Rick could have had a totally different career if events transpired differently, and we might not have this channel and all the great contributions that Rick chose to give back to the community. It's hard to speculate on what could have been, but in my view, we're all winners in this reality. I like to think that the influence that Rick has through this channel on those in the music industry as well as the fans has a giant ripple effect on those watching today and in the future and changes lives along the way.

You are solidifying a legacy by utilizing this platform and channel to cement something we can relate to and gain an appreciation for the experiences in producing music. It’s because they did the AIC harmony on it. I remember Staind saying they would write songs with that harmony and realize they were just doing AIC. All they had to do was use a different harmony on the Leave a Whisper song because the chorus was pretty great.

Same! I'm 64 and love music but never played an instrument (one of my biggest regrets - still might do a "seniors guitar lessons" thingy! Lol) I came across WMTAGS for More Than a Feeling, my favourite track of all time...and I was mesmerised from start to end and I've been binge watching as many of his videos that I can find! I've got a whole new appreciation and understanding for the whole process. He is so easy to listen to, almost like you're in the same room having a conversation with him. There is a tiny invisible point where melody and feeling join and open a portal through which the soul can audibly exist and communicate outside of the body and mind. Sometimes the chord arrangement, played with a certain feeling, combined with a generated touch or 'spark' in the mind and heart of another musician or vocalist, 'moves' them to have no choice but to retort with the first sound,note,or word made,played or expressed. Creation. You both opened up that portal and this was no accident. He had to be there at that time and you both had the right people connection between you two which led you to be the key to unlock that magical moment that only you two could manifest. I remember I discovered Shinedown back in 2010 because Brent Smith sang on track 3 on Apocalyptica´s Album 7th symphony, I think they are a great band. I had no idea Rick helped produce "Leave a whisper", that´s an incredible album man, you should be proud even if you are not listed on the Wikipedia page.

Wow.. All this time that I've breen watching your channel not knowing you co-wrote some of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums of all time. "In Memory" got me into Shinedown as an angsty teen and they remain one of my favorite bands. I tip my hat to you sir! Is it possible to have Brent on the channel? Imagine hearing that voice come out next to you as you’re strumming along to a few chords. That album was big for me…my guitar buddy brought me over .45 and we just dove in.

I was in a band years ago that was so close to a publishing deal. And it was actually ASCAP that was going to do it for us. Set up a meeting for us in NYC and all that. But it never panned out. Not sure who dropped the ball on that one but came close a few times and have no regrets. Better to try for your dreams and have some success then not try and wonder "what if?"

Cool. Good that you made an effort and got farther than most. Also in regards to your name it's Jesus. He's unique. Also wasn't based on osiris or dionysus, or whatever other ideas are put out there. He's the real deal.

I've often wondered what kind of producer you'd be given your breadth of musical knowledge. You certainly have the chops to "over produce" or overly influence the musical direction of an artist/band (isn't that what usually happens with most producers?), but do you have the restraint to let the artist be the artist and limit your role to helping them realize their vision? I ask because Ive always wondered about that regarding the Beatles and Geore Martins role - and felt that because of their age difference and the different "worlds" they occupied prior to their partnership blooming, that his readiness to help while letting them create was a big part of their magic.

It is certainly interesting to see what parts of production he values most. It kind of explains the choices for his What Makes This Song Great series, where he does not necessarily picks the most interesting songs of bands but those closer to that golden-record-production style.

True but he suffers from LSD, Lead Singer Disorder. His voice is fantastic but he'll never let you forget it. LSD'ers won't let the music be. They have to relentlessly chime in, over & over, not giving the music the space it needs. And when you see them in concert, his vocals levels are turned up WAY to high and he just drowns out the rest of the band. It's sad that someone so talented has to overcompensate to the detriment of their work. Oh well, life goes on.

@jalderink Maybe the sound wasn't mixed right every time I saw them live over 15 times you hear Zach and Eric and the drums just fine. He let's Eric and Zach sing alot so yeah not sure what you mean?

Your description of how Brent was living in the guest house reminds me of when my band had just gotten signed: I slept on an air mattress in a friend’s spare room in LA (about the size of a jail cell, no AC) lived off $500 a month and was dropping weight like crazy cuz I could barely afford to eat. It was like that for 2 years, with a record deal and a song hitting #6 on Alt radio. Not healthy. Now my metric for success with music is “can I afford to eat from it?” Lowered expectations 🤷‍♂️😂

Rick...I truly appreciate this channel, on multiple levels. I am a big fan of the same kind of music you showcase here, but couldn't read a sheet of music if my life depended on it. You have elevated my understanding of all things music in the past year that I stumbled upon your station as I was searching for reaction videos to Tool. So glad you have become a weekly part of my online viewing. Again, I greatly appreciate your passion, knowledge, and ability to educate...even those who know next to nothing about reading, writing, or playing music.

Sweet guys! I played bass on a demo for Shinedown that was supposed to be on the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack… not even sure if it made it but man, that guy is a killer singer! Great production man. Love this channel. We have a lot of mutual friends! The music world is so small! 👍⛷☄️🔥

What a voice! I always think I can do a one take when friends and family tell me I’m a good singer, but after a few days with 25 takes plus a few hours on Cubase variaudio that reveals my poorly calibrated ears, I realise that these one-take guys are truly special talents. What a tone to his voice! 😍

Incredible story Rick! Leave A Whisper has the best vocals of any rock album ever, in my opinion. To be there at the very beginnings of writing that album is a great career highlight, and it was great to hear your take on it.

That “Leave a Whisper” track is great! Really the only song you played from him that blew me away, that would’ve been a great track to release! Like alice in chains with some zep vibe and some country twang. Too bad it wasn’t used, that was the song!

I think you are a wealth of knowledge and have an ear second to none. But I want to tell my Shinedown story. I've lived in New Orleans for over twenty years. In late 03, until Katrina, I lived in the Riverbend neighborhood near Southport Hall, a live music venue that played local music and some smaller bands passing through town. Shinedown was starting to be played on the local rock station (106.7 The End for those NOLA old schoolers that might read this) and one morning on The Morning Train Wreck they announced Shinedown was going to be at Southport Hall and tickets were like ten bucks, or maybe twenty (I remember they were not expensive, it was sometime in 2004 I believe). I liked the Shinedown songs they were playing on the station and decided to go. Hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen. Brent sounds amazing and band was killing it.. There were a couple hundred people there, almost filled up the joint. Soon after that they were playing much bigger venues and that is the only time I have seen them live.. But I've been a fan ever since, great talent there.
