I struggled hard with the beginning of my mid-30s. Hard. Jean-Paul Sartre hard. Franz Kafka HARD. The existential struggle about being on the right path (lawyer) versus the alternative path (writer/painter). The existential choice not to have children. Settling into marriage (5-7 years). I am only now unpacking in therapy how much I struggled. And I used whatever I could (work, sugar, exercise, yoga, shopping, etc) to not sit with it. And when I did, it was generally in pieces of writing or painting that left me feeling wrecked. I don't think this mid-30s existential crisis is a topic discussed widely because a lot of people I know have small children in their mid-thirties and are just trying to get through the day of navigating work + toddlers. So bless them, but they are no help. And then others may have greater certainty about their path or don't have a secret creative life that is the source of joy and passion but also intense psychic doubt and hard life choices. So I see you and your track suit. I have some really nice Prada shoes and designer dresses and a HORSE (an actual animal) from that time. None of which I regret except for their financial impact. All of this is to say, you are not alone. It IS hard. You are smart to have the ANNUAL budget. And as you get into your late thirties and forties, it ABSOLUTELY gets better. Therapy helps, but it also just gets better, and that seems to be the case for every single one of my friends who went through the same thing. PS: You made great choices in items and I think your focus on comfort is telling you something big.
Oh my God, your comment resonated so much with me, I almost burst into tears. Also in my early 30s, finally (almost) being a therapist (🤣), debating with myself if this is what I wanted to do if I could start over and struggling with the question whether or not to have children.
The win you need to remember is your awareness now when you buy. As long as you are thinking it through and love/use what you got there's no need to be so tough on yourself.
I can feel your emotional exhaustion. I think of how I would feel after this and then how much more it would be amplified if I had to report to thousands of people. I think the individual items are great choices, if only the opportunity to acquire each one was spaced out more. That’s not always how life works though. Just think how lucky you were to have the cash reserves to acquire them when they presented themselves and adjust your plan. Maybe you will find that you settle in to a pattern if not shopping most months and then doing 2-4 big seasonal spends as the years roll on.
You bought some truly beautiful things in Feb. I live in So AZ, which is similar in climate to LA, so what is nice about things like sweatshirts, track suits, and jackets, is that they will go through a “dormant” period in the Summer. Then next Fall, they will be “new” again. Just remember how much joy they will bring you when that time comes. Thank you for bringing us on your candid journey. Much love.

Remember to be kind to yourself, Hannah. There's nothing wrong with buying things you like. One of the things that Imani always tells me about budgeting is that if you "break" the budget, then it wasn't a realistic budget to begin with. I know that's a little counter to what you're trying to do here, but I always try to keep that in mind when I'm feeling mad at myself for overspending. Also remember that you're trying to change habits. That's a Herculean task on its own. And then to attempt it when you're Going Through It is even worse. You're trying to wrangle your brain when it's already busy trying to just keep up with whatever you've got going on inside of you. You did the best you could with the tools you had, and that is ALL you can ask of yourself. I'm proud of you, Hannah. Seriously. Remember to take extra good care of YOURself.
Hannah, I say this with all due respect, you owe us nothing in terms of your budget. You are a mature adult who can make her own decisions and live with the consequences. We are not your mom or the shopping police, yes this puts you in a bit if a bind, but that is part of your journey with shopping. The sirens are an excellent urban ambient noise that remind me of lovely downtown city work trips. I actually have a sleep sound mix that is a bit like your background. So I enjoy the cityscape sounds. And I am excited for whatever flow state feels good to Hannah content comes up this month.
That Bioderma body wash saved my skin. I hate the feeling of lotion and that shower oil is my favorite. And you’re right about the French pharmacy feel making seem luxe. The best part - is the $20 bottle has lasted me almost a year.

You are Passpartout, valet to Phileas Fogg, and you set off to accompany him during his attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. You choose which routes you wish to take and which items you wish to pack, buying and selling items for profit in different cities along the way. Some items also aid your passage with cheaper tickets, quicker departures etc. It's relaxing and fun and right up my street. If i hadn't promised my hubby that we'd watch a movie together, i'd be playing it right now!😆

I know you're not at this place yet, so be kind and take your time, BUT... I think your next hurdle is realizing that things that may be PERFECT for you may not be perfect for your budget. Does that make sense? I could surround myself with beautiful things that are "worth it" because I would wear the hell out of them, but they're still not worth it. Even a relatively inexpensive leather jacket that you wear every week may not actually be worth it, which I know seems crazy now but it will make sense in time. I love watching you because our journeys are so similar.
I have been stupid over those exact earrings for like weeks now. I want them so much!!!! They look great on you. As for the spending, it’s been a month. You live and you learn. You are doing ok. I don’t think your fans expect prefection in this regard, especially with the stuff you have going on. It’s ok to do ok. So long as you are trying, you are in a better place then you were 2 years ago.

I use the same shower oil, one of the ways I've gotten a little more joy out of it is by decanting some into a nice pump bottle in my shower and adding a different perfume sample vial each time for variety. Maybe it's because it's something I've repurchased for years, but I got bored of the mild smell after a while!

It seems like we have a similar body type and I've nearly given up on trying to find pants that fit me properly. Forgive me if you mentioned it in the video, I'm commenting before finishing it.
I think you're doing the best you can and that's all any of us can expect from ourselves. The headbands are adorable!! And super interested in the bodywash... sounds amazing...I hate using body lotion besides on my hands and arms...would be nice to have a body wash that eliminates the need for it.

I am so emotionally and physically fatigued that I’m just using your wonderful content as a great escape. It’s one of the “treat myself” things on my list - a mindless RU-vid binge. I normally watch/listen to RU-vid while working so it’s nice to just purely enjoy YT and especially the amazing videos you make. February was a successful no buy month for me. And I’ve been holding back from buying in March. But I know April will be a huge replacement month for me because I have a dozen empties already. I’m so excited to hear about the beauty you’ve allowed in your life. All the things you bought are beautiful. But that is misleading because you have amazing taste so I would expect that everything you buy would be just gorgeous. This video spoke to me, cause I also felt the need to buy something like silky pijamas but then when I see that I am overspending I need to bring back the question before I buy”how much I need this?”’. I learned with you that beautiful things should not be the only reason we chose things but also how much we need those. This question stops me from buying lots of things, specially luxury and helps to keep my moderation. Of course if we had unlimited budget and space we could buy as many beautiful things as we could and probably would not regret it, but of couse is not always about regret having it is regretting that we could not hold ourselves in a moderate state. But yea one step at time :) I am happy that you shared this with us!
Sending you a big virtual hug. I have the feeling that this project, maybe more than either of the others, will make better sense once you're at the end of it, looking back. Because the full effects of this kind of looser, longer-term budget and the behavioural patterns it elicits can only be revealed over the course of that broader time span. It must be tough to be battling external as well as internal pressures relating to spending whilst trying to figure out how to be in this project and wrangle all of the other life stuff that never stops coming in over our heads. I trust you and believe in you.
I’m not a huge Disney fan but I do understand the whole fandom merch desire. My issue is with Nintendo however. I recently went to the Nintendo store in NYC and bought a gray slightly over sized jumper and I love it!! I lived in it every cold day I could. It will be with me for years.

I would love to see some sort of video amalgamation of your "doing the most" successes! One way I am trying to find the silver lining during social distancing is going all out with my makeup everyday. If it looks way over the top nobody is going to see it anyway. Also I have found that I touch my face less/am more aware of when I do touch my face when I wear bold lipstick. I have been appreciating my collection with newfound zest. Since I have wiggle room in my finances I have been allowing myself to spend more with small and or local businesses. Controlling my shopping is an area of my life that I can let fall by the wayside in hard times, whereas I still need to focus on eating and activity (even though it's really hard without access to the gym) or I will just fall apart. Everything you bought looks beautiful and I'm excited to see you enjoy and use and evaluate the purchases as the months go on. Maybe you will do another ranking video at the six month mark (?!) that would be neat.

I love the bioderma atoderm gel, that line of skincare products was a recommendation by my dermatologist! I have super sensitive dry skin and I stuggle with eczema and this is basically the only body wash which doesn't irritate my skin. I also use the atoderm lotion and it's super hidrating. Also I wanted to tell you I bought the marula oil from the ordinary thanks to you're recommendation, I am currently waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait to try it! 😘
It's okay Hannah - you have been using most of what you bought, as you say it's just a bit alarming all at once. I personally spent more this month, and it was on stuff that I have been using. The main thing is that you are more aware of the value of money and that you have spent a lot more than usual. Do you divide your annual budget into months, eg you have a average budget of .... each month? I couldn't imagine trying to deal with an annual budget without breaking it down a little
I love the sound of that Bioderma shower oil, but after looking at the ingredients it does look like it's made from palm oil, which I try to stay away from for environmental/ethical reasons. Love that tracksuit! I could def imagine how difficult it would be to say “no” to that especially under the circumstances with your friend. I’ve really been down with hair accessories lately. Since my hair is a longer length I want to take advantage of it before I end up getting it chopped off again;) I just purchased the Bioderma Shower Oil as well but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Bath and body products are one of my downfalls in terms of purchasing too much when I already have enough. I need to start checking myself with that. I’ve been using bar shampoos for many years and lately have been flirting with the idea of trying a more “traditional” shampoo. The R&CO Cactus has actually been one that I’ve been eyeing. I’ll have to check out the sizes. It would be great if I could try a travel size. I honestly don’t know how my hair would react to a more traditional shampoo. That leather jacket, the two pairs of pants and the tracksuit are fucking bomb and look amazing on you! I know it might feel unnatural to think of it this way now (and there’s a chance this mode of thought might be a little delusional lol) but perhaps you’re lucky that events unfolded as they did - if you picture alternative timeline Hannah who is still well within her “monthly budget”, she would be far more prone to whittling away her yearly budget on smaller, less special and non-essential items (e.g. more of the cream blush type purchases) leaving her unable to crystallise her budget into purchasing such few nice things by the end of the year. Maybe it really couldn’t have gone down any other way if you wanted your yearly purchases to end up with the sort of shape they’ve acquired in January and February? In any event, it is all still entirely within your power to make these purchases stand as great decisions by doing the hard legwork for the rest of the year to ensure you come in under your budget. I’m confident you’ll manage to kill it as usual ❤️
I totally know what you are saying, I too am curious as to whether this type of all-at-once spending might actually serve me better in the long run. It just depends on being able to stop completely for the months that follow :)
