Hello, friends! I am a writer, a tango dancer, and a clothing designer, and on the side I'm obsessed with makeup & skincare. I did a NO-BUY YEAR in 2018 to break my habit of overspending on beautiful things, and I created this channel to record my progress. In the wake of my no-buy year I'm learning how to balance my love of beauty with my desire for moderation and financial health. If that resonates with you, hope you will subscribe to my channel!
In the cooler months I definitely wear longer socks but as we keep deeper into summer it has become less appealing. Since I live in a desert, I wear calf length socks or ankle socks currently. I think I keep circling around shirt/short sets, I see a lot of really nice men’s ones but have yet to find a women’s equivalent that I like. If I found one, I would probably buy it.
I'm a millennial and I always strongly disliked sneaker socks and always wore "regular" socks that go over the ankle 🤔 i honestly dont understand how genz is making the higher socks into their thing when it's always been everyone's thing
It’s the crew socks debate for my millennial self, I continue to add to cart and remove and add and remove - brings me back to 1992 when I wore crew socks with gigantic frills around the cuffs to match my full floral print dress! Idk if I can go back there?!
1) Lol, I just ordered some summer vests from Amazon today but the brand you are highlighting looks gorgeous. 2) Gurrrl get the pointy shoes! It’s not as pointy and long as the pointy shoes of the early 2000s. 3) As for the Gen Z style socks, I tried them with tennis/golf dresses but not all the time. (Gen Xer here)
I do wear pointy shoes and wear some that are not that dissimilar to the ones you’re talking about here although mine are a pointed toe mule (from Nisolo) and not a slingback. I always feel quite elegant in a pointed toe which is something I love about them and I find them quite comfortable but I will say with the style you’re looking at that you might need to size up. I have found with most pointy toe shoes that I frequently need to go up 1/2 size.
Love the stream of consciousness make-up hot takes! 😘The ugly Chanel shades remind me of the iridescent blush pearls of the 90s: like rub them all at once and apply. Lastly, I’ve been thinking of you every time I go lip balm shopping!
Hi Hannah! I have had a bee in my ear for a while now whispering "what does Hannah's collection of loungewear, aka level 1 fanciness, look like"? As a comfiness enthusiast who also wants to bring a sense of glam to my lounge wardrobe, I was wondering if you'd be willing to cover this in a video? You've mentioned having an extensive collection of comfies, and I both struggle to find glamorous loungewear and trust your taste in quality :)
Like a shark I have been circling a pair of pointy toed boots that go all the way to the knee. Black leather and a narrow-ish heel. Not the chuncky profile of my current black boots, ney ney, a much more sleeker and high heeled profile. Thinking more like 70s style, the kind worn with a wool plaid skirt and turtleneck sweater with many gold chains. Maybe even early 80s disco, with satin pants tucked in and a tube top covered by the matching satin jacket. Absolutely no practicality in my real life, this is pure fiction stuff. Having the most fun thinking about them, fantasizing about the slow, long, great distance covering zipper. I can almost feel the sting of getting my skin stuck in the zipper and the rubber smell of the band-aid as I apply it to the weepy blister on my little toe. This is what occupies my mind these days, and it's a glorious time!
Also, regarding the sock trend -- I have socks that high for mountain biking. I wear them with big dorky mountain biking shoes. I go to the store in it. I've gotten compliments. But it didn't feel "me". On the other hand, I'm newly obsessed with my no-profile Ondo socks
Definitely try the higher socks!! My favourite thing about them is how they offer such an easy and accessible way to add fun pops of colour/pattern to an outfit
I acquired a pair of fisherman sandals from Freda Salvador after thinking about them for 2 years. As a cusp gen xerox (xennial), these reminded me of the chunky brown version we wore with a lug sole in the late 90s. Also not fashion...but I think the current iteration hearken back further to actual old timey European fisherpeople and looks therefore more refined to me.
Fisherman sandals…. It reminds me of Melissa, a Brazilian brand that used to do the jelly sandals you said but then got into fashion. I really like their shoes but to be honest these shoes always torture my feet. So I got over it. Comfort above all.
Ok, I haven’t tried them yet but there is a “foot shaped” brand called Carets that makes very well constructed looking pointy toe shoe. I’m not into wearing black and that is the only color they come in, but they look like the best bet for comfort I have seen!
I am mid 40s and tried the tall sock trend. It's great. It's a low cost entry to try a fun trend. It's very comfortable and a fun way to express your personality.
I feel like blazers don't match your essence: relaxed, natural, minimal. A blazer might bring too much sharpness that contrasts against your soft nature.
Feel similarly about the pointy shoes! Though I have also noticed square toe flats are very popular at the moment and wondering if I could find a sleek, angular version that would achieve a similar feeling without as much discomfort?
I'm here to give everyone permission that you can wear a blazer whenever you want, you definitely don't have to have an office job for that. (I work an office job and I wear blazers but rarely to the office, mostly just for coffee dates with friends, going out etc. 😅 It's just not convenient for a desk job and public transport commute for me, and all my colleagues dress so casually)
Not to disparage the fisherman sandal, but I find items like this, which feel so far outside of one’s sense of style, present such an intriguing moment. For me, it comes down to determining whether the item actually does interest me and is expanding the bounds of my taste, or whether I’m not interested in the item, but in the marketing around the item. I know that I personally would look like a child wearing this style of sandal, and yet I still feel drawn because the imagery around them promise a sense of ease, of connectedness to nature, and of playfulness that very much is what I want. If I determine the promise of marketing to be the source of my interest, then I can find ways to meet what have emerged as needs or wants - often without buying anything at all, or by buying something else entirely (In my case, it was birdseed).
My elderly aunt wears her socks up because her legs get cold and she has arthritis in one of her ankles. On the other hand, THANK YOU for showing more brands that do fisherman sandals very practical and sturdy for my lifestyle. I have been on the look out for a couple of years now.
Majority shoes in my collection are pointy. Those are my favorite. And a lot of people I know tell me that I am the most stylish person in their social circle. I believe it’s because of my shoes. They can be unbelievably comfortable. I love those you showed but they seem a bit pricey to buy it without knowing for sure they would be comfortable.
As quite a short person, I almost exclusively wear pointy shoes! The risk of tripping, particularly if you’re going about in areas where the sidewalks are uneven, is a bit higher, as is the risk of scuffing the toe (I find a severely scuffed toe is the reason I have had to retire certain pairs.). However, neither of these risks are enough to deter me from enjoying a pointy toed shoe for at least a few years
Oh! And to your question about whether toes feel squished, I find that mind do not, despite my wide feet. Pointy shoes are certainly not the /most/ comfortable fit in the toe compared to, say, a sneaker, but I wear sling back pointy mules every day and never have rubbing or anything like that.
Dear girl, collectively Gen X is over here with the sideward glance at the "Gen Z sock trend" and opening our sock drawers to reveal our crew socks, which never went away. We never got on board the baring of ankles because if socks do not cover the ankles, what is the point of wearing them?
Hi Hannah. I know this video is old, but I still want to cheer on and thank your former self for sharing these insights. You go girl! Also, I can’t wait to start reading Julia Hungry, the book! I ordered it today from Amazon. -Marianne
I'm 31 and have been wearing my socks like that forever and had no idea it was on trend or a gen z thing, but then again - I'm not on instagram or social media.
I’ve been circling around the blazer trend, loving the way people look when they wear them but when I put them on feeling like I should be going to the office haha so what I did was find one at the thrift store and I’ve been playing around with that to decide if I’m going to invest in one
Thank you. This is the video I needed to end my agony over whether to re-buy the diamond studs I left in a hotel one of the RARE times I took them out to put in some damn statement earrings. I wore them daily. Never removed them - except to put in the damn statement earrings I work twice a year. Also -the amazing thing about Birks is that you can have them resoled forever.
Do you have other recommendations for linen vest tops? I’ve also been looking for tshirt non tshirt tops! The one you showed is so beautiful but it’s just simply out of budget for me 🥲the impulse to go to old navy is strong but I know they won’t last and won’t work on my petite frame
Interesting - I have to say I have a number of dresses that are mainly viscose with some elastane and they’ve worn extremely well for ten years. No wrinkles and look polished.
I know you have been on the hunt for underwear before, so I feel it's ok to ask: have you thought about period underwear? I'm looking into it at the moment and would love your feedback - something sold in europe 🙂
As far as pointy shoes… I am 5’8” with long bony 8 1/2 size feet. The comfort is fine, I just don’t like my feet to look longer. As for the blazer. I would never dare come into THIS channel and encourage spending… however…. I finally broke down and bought one and my job only calls for it maybe twice a year. I wear it all the time. You will love it.
Hi Hannah! I'm all about comfort when it comes to shoes and I tend to trip over my own feet and everything else all the time anyway (neurodivergent clumsyness). For safety reasons I try to avoid heels as much as possible and I was never even pregnant. But I've had, worn and well loved several pairs of pointed toe shoes in my life. Never had any problems wearing them... or let's say at least not more or different problems than usual. 😅 So if I am able to pull off that style I have no worries at all that a professional dancer like you could walk, run, live their life and feel fine in pointed toe shoes, too. 😄
I’m circling around cowgirl boots…I keep seeing men in cowboy boots and hats and I think it’s SO HOT and would be cool and tomboyish and southwestern to wear really nice black (pointed/snip toe!) cowgirl boots with black slacks and top to work…but I have never rounded up a cow, so would it feel like cosplay?
I'm ADHD and in the spectrum, and I'm pro socks, I love socks. Girl, compression socks are a whole new level of the 30s I wasn't expecting, but yes, I really like high socks. Altho they make me lol sometimes when I see it live on the street (specially when they are the whitest cleanest white of colors) but who am I to judge, I go all the way to the knee.
