Tip: start watching weather forecast. If there is a storm or snow forecast just salt your drive way and walk way. This will help you to shovel easily. Secondly, if you forget to salt and now snow is turning to ice than salt do heavy salting and leave it for an hour or so and then then shovel it will help. You should get ergonomics snow shovel (the one your husband was using when pandit ji came) this will reduce back and arm pain. POTL guys do the snow shovelling of the street but they do make snow bank in front of your driveway so just a heads up :).

Great video as always! Moving to Canada in winter was a shock for me and I have never gotten to appreciate the snow. Having not stayed there long enough to become acclimatized, I am still afraid when it snows hard and I have to be outdoors. I love your sense of adventure and I will stay warm here and enjoy all your exploits there.

After watching the footage from you at the Canadian Tire. Take it from a Québec homeowner: you need a narrow (maybe 10-12 inch wide) metal shovel with a flat end, and a wider, 2-3 feet plastic one for clearing a path. A narrower, flat edged metal tool (2-3 inch) to break ice could be useful as well, but i rarely use one. But get a metal flat edged shovel. Plastic will not work on hard, frozen snow.

Hi Pooja, I can completely relate our first day in our new house was in January and it was brutal! We ended up getting two shovels so that we could both shovel the snow together. Also, we always wear our snow/skii gloves while shoveling and always always wear a good warm cap to cover the ears. Makes a huge difference! All the best! The first week is the toughest, it really does get better!

When we purchased our first home we didnot have a car as weren't licesed, it was soo soo difficult, I can understand your struggle. We too moved during winters and literally everyday until summer I was like why why did I move from rented condo to owning a townhouse.....get your driving license guys....its MANDATORY here. Now we again moved to bigger house and having cars has made our move and settling down an easy and happy process. All the best you got this. We are having our puja in two days.
@IzzyOnTheMove
@IzzyOnTheMove 2 года назад
Also, there are plastic and metal shovels. The wider, plastic ones are better to clear a path, while a narrower metal shovel helps with breaking through ice or frozen snow. Break the snow in small blocks and be careful for your back. Snow is heavy! Bend your knees not with your back and take smaller portions at a time when moving the snow around 🙂Salt such as Alaskan on ice paths is great not to slip.

For heavy snow you might need a snow blower - we got ours from Canadian Tire. The brand is Greenworks. Also, ours is electric. The gas one makes a lot of noise.

You also should shovel a path from your door to the street for the mailperson. Canada Post employees may not deliver your mail if it's dangerous for them to do so, and it's just nice to do it for them too ❤

Hey guys just buy a wide shovel and a narrow shovel. Don’t buy anything labelled jobmate. Then just buy the big yellow bags of salt. Nothing expensive or fancy. It all melts and washes away anyways. Good luck!

Clean snow in batches. Push snow to side of drive. You can break your back by lift and overdoing. Best luck. I’m pushing snow for past 25 years. It’s a great workout when you are bundle up well.

Hi Guys, Congrats on your new home! If you don't have time or there is too much snow to tackle, you can also try searching Kijiji for snow shoveling and this will search local people for you who can shovel and salt for you for a fee. Other days when there is not much snow, you can shovel on your own. Hope this helps!

About salts: we were told to add salt once it has snowed for a bit and not on the empty ground before it starts snowing. We are new homeowners as well, so thought of sharing some useful tips that we've learned in the last few months.

If you guys don't like to shovel you can always hire people to shovel your driveway. Or you can get a snowblower (my dad has one as we have a 3 car garage house & our drive way is huge). The salt is more for ice prevention or to make ice less slippery/melt. This winter season has been super bad in terms of heavy snow in Ontario. I'm not sure if there's a lot of "Zip Cars" i(less expensive membership service for car rentals) in Oakville but if you desperately need a car for the day (running a lot of errands) they're pretty good in terms of pricing.
@IzzyOnTheMove
@IzzyOnTheMove 2 года назад
You can rent a car until you buy one. There are snow plow services where you pay a fee for the winter and they'll come and clear your driveway for you when it snows. Research your options ❤ I don't drive so i only shovel the path to the sidewalk by hand :) In Québec a lot of people have an outside temporary garage for their car (like a huge tent for a car) that you install in the fall and take down in Spring. There are even services where they install and store it for you. But since you have an indoor garage, a snow removal service is enough 💜

You have to buy the black shovel, you can just use it as a scrape to push snow and then use this red one to scoop it. You get a combo of these for 34.99. Using red one works too but it hurts your back.

We also have a similar ritual here in the Philippines whenever someone moves in a new house (rented or owned). We usually fill up containers full of water, salt and rice and these are the things that we bring in first in the house. They say it brings good luck.

You need to outsource your snow ❄️ cleaning search on FB marketplace and Kijji or check in your neighbourhood. You get seasonal snow removal contract which cost anywhere between 300-400 per season whenever there will be snow they come and clean your snow. We live in Oakville for past 27 years never have cleaned our snow always outsourced.
