Emmy Award-winning host and noted expert, Joe Lamp'l demonstrates as he starts plants from seed - including soil choice, depth, set-up, lighting, and more. When you're ready to go deeper and avoid the pitfalls that many seed starters struggle with, check out my online course, Master Seed Starting - joegardener.co...
I grew thousands of seedlings to experiment with various types of soil, fertilizers, grow light options - all kinds of topics that I get questions on all the time. I put it all together in my online course, along with demonstration videos and bonus materials, so you can see for yourself what works, what doesn’t and how you can do all of this. It doesn’t need to cost a lot of money either. In the course, I cover what’s worth the money, and what you can do for less or even free.
There’s MUCH more great garden info from Joe Lamp’l of joegardenerTV - including Joe's Online Gardening Academy (joegardener.com/learn) and links to The joe gardener Show weekly podcast series (joegardener.co..., garden blogs (joegardener.co...) and e-book resource guides to teach you everything you need to know about composting (joegardener.co...) and more.

I have always wet my soil first which is so much easier for me. It takes so long to wet this soil. Bless you, we all have what works for us.
@mow1416
@mow1416 3 года назад
I agree, wetting the soil from the bottom at first is easier but a gentle watering from the top with hot water settles the seeds and promotes contact with the potting medium which is necessary for germination.

I just planted some seeds using Jiffy pods, I have a light for them. Do I leave the light on 24/7? Do I need to turn the light? of for a certain about of hours? It's my first time starting seeds indoor, they are flower seeds. Thank you.

@@texasrose2315 no, 12-14 hours. Becarefully with Jiffy pots, they dry out fast and tend to mold when they get too wet. They are also a really expensive medium to use. Great for your first time but not for long term option. Good luck. :-)

@chrisferrario1540 Год назад
@@texasrose2315 most plants don’t need light to germinate but it’s good to have it there when they pop up. Some folks will do 16 on /8 off. Use a timer and keep that light close or they will get leggy. And yes. Watch water. Those pots seem awesome for mess but they can be tricky. Ask around when it’s time to transplant. Folks may have some suggestions there too

Newbie gardener here & am disappointed with the mystery of why my beautiful sprouted spinach seedlings stopped growing at 1" and became yellow, some had discoloration of red on the stem, leaves wilted & fell off or just died almost 2 weeks after being sprouted. I did keep the cover on my jiffy greenhouse pellets for about 2 weeks after they sprouted, not knowing they were to be taken off right after germination-- THANK YOU for that info! I now want to learn about "damping off". I know I have to start from the beginning to sprout spinach indoors or I'll just continue to wait out for warm weather here in Northern NJ to direct sow.

I have been using a similar method for years. The only difference is the water temperature. I use hot water to wet the seeding medium and have germination in 24 hours. I don't know if this will work with every seed type but so far it has worked for me with 100% germination. Excellent video. I wish pro mix was available in the big box stores. The mixture is amazing. If you decide to try my hot water method and have the same success please pass it on. A real time saver!

Downside since i expected a long seeding time i may have sprouted them way too early

I have a beginner's question: at the end of this video you have multiple seedlings in each cell. When/how do you separate them? (Do you typically up-pot each of the seedlings? Or do most go directly into the garden, after a stage of acclimation?) I've read that it can sometimes be tricky to separate the roots, if they are too close together.... Is there a video you would recommend for that? I've been listening to your podcast, which I enjoy, but that's one thing that I'd like to see, since I imagine there is some technique involved, when separating seedlings. Thank you, Joe!
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 5 лет назад
Thanks Travis. The seedlings separate easily at this stage. I know it looks odd but its surprising how resilient they are when you tease them apart. And yes, I always transplant them to their own container for another 4 weeks or so before planting into the garden. I do have a video where you can see us breaking up the rootball and transplanting. Just scroll through the first part and you will see this section with my daughter doing it. Also Craig LeHoullier has a video on actually showing you this process for sure. His website is nctomatoman.com. And here's the link to the video where you can see us doing it: www.growingagreenerworld.com/waking-up-the-gardenfarm/

Right - for me any mix containing peat moss is hydrophobic - the water added on top would pour off and take the seeds with it! It takes a lot of work to pre-hydrate and get it to absorb, but worth it.

Hello Joe and thank you for this great video on how to start seedlings! I have been trying to do this for several years and have been unsuccessful. But you have renewed my determination to keep trying. I have 2 questions: How early do you start these seedlings and how cool is the room where you put seedlings on the heated mat? I’m not sure if my garage is too cool or if I start the seedlings too early. It looked like your seedlings were in an unheated room in the house. Thanks for your help in advance!
@RWG57
@RWG57 2 года назад
Cathy - My experience in southern NY is my attached but unheated garage is simply too cold, even with heat mats. Basement around 60-65 is ok with heat mat and lights. If you need to stay in garage think about a little green house (even if just plastic over shelves and lights) using small heater to get temp up to 55 or so, then using mat for trays. Good luck! If you have a sunny window try a few there also - once started move to the "green house". Keep the lights close to plants so they don't get too leggy.

Thanks Olga. I do separate them when they are about 4 weeks old. They each get teased apart (surprisingly easy to do) and they go into their own container. I keep about 32 for my garden and the rest get sold by my daughter. I will do follow up videos for sure of this process.

Some great tips here, but a much easier way to plant a lot of seeds in a small space is using soil blocks. No need to separate them later and disturb the roots. I would also recommend to definitely not leave water sitting in the bottom of the tray. The plastic cover will hold the moisture in easily even if not sopping wet, and greatly reduces the risk of damping off.

Great video! I usually start my seeds on the mat but not under the light. When the seeds start to germinate I vent the dome, then remove it when the seedlings sprout, and gradually introduce the light. So far, it’s going okay, but you definitely are producing on a different scale than I am. Would I be likely to have more success if I put the tray under the lights on day 1? I will definitely be looking for the video to see how you sort out all those little plants. Thanks again-you are a great teacher.

hi Joe, enjoyed your video and since it's been a few years I hope you'll be able to help me. I live in zone six so it's to soon to plant outside yet. I'll be able to plant outside around mid May. started my tomato and pepper plants inside using a heat mat and grow lights. they are doing very well and tomatoes are 6-8 in high after being transplanted in to deeper pots. my problem is that I don't have enough grow light space for all of them now and I want to start more plants. since they are established, can I move them outside in the portable greenhouse? I watch the weather very carefully and nights are usually in the upper 30s to 40s. at what temp do I need to get them indoors? ty 🙂

So is the ambient temperature over 80 degrees F? If so I would try a small fan moving across the soil. But those seeds will germinate just fine up to 80 degrees and most even higher except for lettuce.

I order from Amazon. There are lots of options there. If you want specific suggestions you can check out my online shop here. Just look for the "indoor growing" section. joegardener.com/amazon

How do you separate up to 16 plants and they don't die. Do you have to make sure you get a little bit of dirt with each one or as long as it's got a root, it works
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 11 месяцев назад
The key is being gentle with the root ball. Gently tease out each seedling. It helps if the soil is dry. Take your time and tease them apart. They separate surprisingly easy! You don't need soil to be attached to the roots. You will immediately be potting them into another container that has plenty of soil. Once transplanted, tap the container onto the surface to settle the soil and water it in. Be sure to plant each seedling deeply, about almost up to the leaves. Good luck!

@joegardenerTV So you're not transplanting them into your garden outside. Are you just transplanting them to another seedling container? If so at how many weeks do you do that? Appreciate your responding.

Great video. Is it okay to use tap water if it’s “softened?”
@BroodingPeeps
@BroodingPeeps 4 года назад
The biggest question never answered in these videos is how often should I water the soil/tray. Should I keep the soil damp 24/7? Should I fill the tray with water and let the soil/seedlings do its own magic? Potting is the easy part. What do we do next?

What if I don't have a heat lamp or pad?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 3 месяца назад
The heat pad is a nice touch have but not necessarily a need to have item. It will likely just take a few days longer for seeds to sprout in cooler temperatures. The light (not a heat lamp) is more important and I would make that my first investment for as little as $20 to get an LED shop light at the box store. 👍

Thank you for your videos! I bought a used grow light stand with verilux full spectrum F40T12VLX bulbs that the former owner said were new. I am new at seed starting indoors and I have a question regarding some arugula seedlings. They seemed to have stopped growing. I was hoping to grow lettuces during the winter. They only have the 2 primary set of leaves and the seeds were planted around the fifth of November. Some leaves look burnt so I reduced the amount of time they are under the lights. I also have fungus gnats and wonder if the larvae could be responsible. I used Espoma seed starting mix and am feeding with Burpee water soluble plant food. 5-2-4. Hope you can help!

If it's too warm, sometimes lettuce doesnt grow well, it bolts because it's a cold weather crop, also your light may have been too close, fungus knats are so annoying but one sure way to keep them down is to either bake your potting soil before planting, after it cools down of course, or you can wet it down with boiling water to kill anything in it beforehand

Hello there I started three trays of seedling and to my delite one portion stared germinating in the first week. Unfortunately the other two and a half trays haven't had any progress in germinating. Used muscle grow seed starting mix. Planted seeds as directed by packet and watered. Need help on this. What are your thoughts. Thanks

Doesn't that hard spraying water disturbs the soil and can make the seeds move and probably fall of the tray?

@@donnasteward7670 good question. definitely vermiculite, peat moss. It has been a week since I watched the video and I just dont remember more. but if you do rewatch for any mention of ingredients will you please post here? Thank you

I use a mixture of peat and vermiculite. When you pit up you can plant them into a more nutrient dense potting mix.

Did you ever germinate a birdhouse gourd seed? How do I do it?
@fultonjohnsonaton5096
@fultonjohnsonaton5096 3 года назад
I did! I pre-soaked it for a few hours in a glass of tepid rainwater(optional!) , then put it between a folded sheet of pre-moistened kitchen towel, and into a plastic bag/ziploc bag. Spritz the inside with a little water, and put it in a warm dark place. Like a hot press, kitchen cupboard near the oven. Check it daily, should sprout quickly enough. also, i blow the bag up with air before i tie it cause the CO2 in your breath is good for the germination ;)
