As someone who has booked you a few times, it was mostly coincidence that made it happen. I graduated college in 2018 with an English degree, but I've been working as a full-time photographer (also self-employed). My plan was always to start focusing on my writing projects, and right as I was thinking I needed to find someone to start looking at some older work that I was just too close to to accurately judge, you announced your Fiverr! So it worked out that someone I 'trusted,' as much as you can trust someone you've never met lol, was offering what I was looking for. I've booked a few more times, and I've always been super happy with the feedback. I'm working on my first NA romance that I'm considering self-publishing, so next year sometime you will probably see me popping into your inbox again. Lol.

I've had a service on Fiverr for a while and those fees they take out...it takes a piece of my soul with it! But that's brilliant that you transitioned over into having your own website. I never even thought of that before. Thank you for sharing!

I know it's been 2 years and things change, but this video was super helpful to me. Also, thank you so much for acknowledging the way your reality is different than many (no student loans, no car payment, etc). I have been doing a lot of research in 2023 and I have watched a lot of similar videos where the author's don't factor in their circumstances and how that enables them to do some of what they do. I want to sell signed copies of my books online as well as my editing services. I have looked into so many services (Etsy, Fiverr, etc) and I keep going back to the desire to work through my own website. I haven't been able to find a video talking about the experience quite a transparent and honest as this one. ❤

I've wanted to be a book editor and only over the past year or so have landed on wanting to be a freelance book editor, and this month I decided I'm going to put those plans into action. Thank you so much for answering my question! I’ve only been on Fiverr for 2 months and I’ve been so crazy busy, I’ve rarely had a day off (not to mention, I had to bail on Nano). As a mom of two I won’t be able to keep this pace up for long. I love what I do but managing my own schedule and payments is definitely the plan. Thank you for being such an inspiration!

I’ve been proofreading, tutoring, and writing for basically free forever. People wouldn’t pay me or wouldn’t want to pay much. I want to make it full-time, but it’s not there yet. I have gotten a lot of people who want me to fix their school papers and they’re terrible and it’s a ton of work for no money. I’m trying to make it better.

This was super interesting, even as an avid viewer of your content, I still learned a lot! One question I have is, if we order a signed copy of your books from your website, would you make more from doing that then if we bought it through like amazon for example? I feel like the answer is obviously yes but like I hadn’t considered that before 😂

Thank you for the video!! I think you explained pretty well, and I appreciate you making a video to give us more info. I wish I would’ve had the foresight to start a bunch of things earlier in life like you have 😅 Quick question! When you were talking about the spreadsheets in regards to payments, you said “payment plan”, I was just wondering if you meant that as in you allow people to pay in parts/not in full? Or was it just in regards to the three ways you get the payment?

Hello @Katesbookdate, Thank you for sharing this detailed video on how you started freelance editing and your other sources of income. I didn't know that Fiverr takes 20% of your earnings....that's crazy! I have a few questions that I would like for you to answer: 1. What editing classes did you take online? Did you take any free online courses, and if so, which ones worked the best for you? 2. If someone wants to become an editor, and they don't have any experience, do you think that Fiverr would be the best way to start or should they try something else? 3. I know you mentioned that you learned more about editing by taking courses online, but can you recommend any writing groups online (preferably free ones and ones that require Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) that can help one hone their skills? I want to work from home as an editor....but I don't have any experience. I've been volunteering at a literary magazine for a little while now....but I mostly read submissions and let the editor in chief know if it's a good fit for the magazine or not. Also, I lightly proofread accepted submissions. I did try my hand at giving feedback to writers on submissions....but unfortunately, that didn't last long because the editor in chief didn't feel that I was strong enough for it. I'm still trying to figure out how to go about this...but I'm still trying to figure things out. I already graduated from college almost 2 years ago and while I was in school, I didn't get the chance to join writing organizations or work for college newspapers/magazines while at college (it's a long story...don't really wanna go into all that here). I linked some classes in the description! Unfortunately, I don’t know of any free ones. As for starting with no experience, maybe try beta reading for people for free first to see how you like it! There’s goodreads groups where you can offer to beta read for people

How did you go about learning about the taxes involving being self-employed? I’ve been attempting to learn as much as possible about it before starting some freelance work, but don’t want to mess anything up. Did you hire an accountant or did you figure it out yourself?

Some people, most people have Tax people, people who do not work in a professional setting like bank and such that do taxes, search around the IRS website and around tax time on the internet, ask family, friends etc., do meet in person with said person and see how many clients they have just to make sure they are legit, if your nervous about that then ask a bank manager if they might have someone in mind. Their are plenty of tax people out there they should be able to help.

Curious about the freelance editing! What level of editing do you most commonly do when people hire you? Developmental? copyedit? line edit? or proofreads? And do clients hire you for more than one level of edit? For instance, if someone hired you for a developmental edit and you do that, then do they hire you for a line/copyedit after they've addressed your developmental edits?
