Looking good Greg! You’re actually giving me a lot of motivation growing a full beard out for the first time because my cheeks are a little patchy; however, if you yourself can start out with some patches and end up looking like Zeus, I guess I can, too! 😂😂
Greg, I always enjoy your videos and insight. I myself have been growing a beard for a few months now without cutting. I always have a beard but typically keep it trimmed and shorter. Since I started growing my beard fuller and longer I have used both oil and balm. I’ve noticed a great smell as well as texture. My hairs are much less coarse.
I’m so excited now that my mans beard has finally gotten past the “rub my face off” stage when we kiss. He’s growing his at the same time as you! Keeping up on your progress
Greg I live in Saskatchewan and I wear a beard and it's the dry climate summer, fall, winter and spring. Beard oil has helped me considerably. Take care.
Well it’s comforting to see that a guy like you has a bit of a patchy beard in the beginning considering I’ve seen what you look like with a full one. The patchiness in the early stages has always stopped me from growing one because I was worried it would stay that way. I’m going to try growing one out for 3 months and see what it looks like at that point.
I'm both. I do 10 drops of oil first, then I put balm on. Mainly for styling and keeping the fly aways at Bay but it also helps with keeping my hair and skin moisturized.
I use both, balm for everyday use, and oil for special occasions solely for the amazing smell of the brand I use! I'm enjoying the progression of your beard growth videos, looking forward to Zeus' return!!
Thanks for all the tips they were extremely helpful, especially the itchiness of my beard that was caused because it was too dry. I use rosa musqueta oil, something used for healing wounds and it helped tremendously
I'm also on week 3 going into week 4 of my beard/mustache growth. Thanks for the tips on itching, will have to try out both oil and balm due to the fact I wash my face everyday.
I've tried dozens of times to grow facial hair but always got disappointed with all the bare spots, thanks to you I got motivation that I didn't have before. I started with the mustache six years ago and had a lot of itch, then went to the goatee five years ago and the itch was even worse but I wanted it so I dealt with it. My spotty four week beard though no itch at all, oddly. Never used any oil or balm until recently thanks to your channel. Wish I would have known about it years ago. Never used the balm so can't say anything about that yet.
I use the utility temple smoke or tea tree balm daily and then later in the afternoon/ night I use the beard oil (same fragrances) to prevent the itchy and to help skin keep moisturized during the night.
I’ve tried both beard oil and beard balm and After trying both I use the Lumber Yard Utility balm from beard brand . I’m on my second jar and love it! I have recently had some heavy itch and flaking on the corner of my chin and the utility balm worked like a charm.
Utility Balm is the one product I could not live without. I used to get terrible itchiness at my old job because I had to wear a beard net (the indignity!). Sadly, this was before I had discovered Beardbrand or beard care in general, so my itchiness went un-soothed until I left the job.
I use both depending on how my beard feels . I've trimmed my beard down from Half its length to deal with this red dryness patch on one side of my chin. For that use balm or just Nivea creme. To really moisturise the red flaky area only.
Damn that's growing in quick Greg! I shaved mine off a week before you and I'm at around the same stage of growth. And yeah, I had A LOT of itchiness and made a video about how I stopped it. Took a lot of product tweaking
You know what's great about these vids? Everyone was in love with Gregg's beard, because it was pretty much perfect. But shaving it off, you can see Gregg has allot of the "issues" we all have: the growth of the hairs that isn't dense, some patches and bald spots here and there, itching, etc. Goes to show you can have an amazing beard as long as you take good (daily) care of it and above all, have patience.
Yeah Greg great video yeah the itch goes away in about 90 days or so...so if you have any issues now, it should be going away soon. I had terrible itch and what I did is moisturize my face and it helped tremendously. Today is my beard is getting a little longer, I use a combination of beard oil and I also use beard balm. I use beard oil to hang around the house and right after I shower or wash my face and the balm when I'm going out for either business or pleasure. I wash my face often because nothing is worse than your girl telling you your beard stinks. Keep it going Greg, you're getting back to your old self it's good to see. Cheers!
I usually go for the oil but sometimes I’ll use a balm or both. When I use oil in my beard I use a boar bristle brush. When I use balm or a combination of the two, I use a wooden beard comb.
I use oil for the first month or so of growth then I switch to oil + balm when I start getting some length. I always add the oil while my beard is still damp and warm from the shower, before any blow drying. Then, after it's dry, I'll add the balm for a little extra moisturizing and also for the little bit of hold the balm provides. I'm 3 months into growing my beard back out and am getting to the stage where things want to get a little wonky so it's nice to have that bit of control.
Utility Balm! I think I have everything in the BeardBrand lineup EXCEPT oil... my beard type just needs more control, and I like the sheen with the mild hold that the balm provides. I combine it with the sea salt spray for hold and sheen. - Eric
I am guessing that the seasons matter a lot as to why you get the itch while growing once and not another time. I am into day 25 of growing my beard and can relate to the itch. Being my first serious attempt, I found the tips on washing off properly and using the balm, very helpful. I am using oil at the moment and I must say it does add shine but is not helping a lot with the itch. I'm going to try some natural beard balm now. Thanks for the tips 🙂
I have a relatively springy/bushy beard with 2" hairs. I use oil every single day when I get out of the shower. Sometimes first thing in the morning when I don't plan on showering until later in the day and I still occasionally have beardruff issues. It comes and goes. It's definitely a product of dryness because it is almost always associated with itching. At this point I'm not sure if I need to try a different product (ie switching to balms instead of oil), a different brand, or change my washing habits (I wash every other day with grandpa's pine tar soap).
Right now I'm trying coconut oil to see it it works for me. People said online that I should try it but then other people said don't use it. But still gonna try it for the week.
damn love that you're doin this! Would have never guessed you were that patchy underneath! the hair on my chin is patchy so it prevents me from growing it all out.
Ever since scotch Porter co washing I've had ZERO itch. And this is my second growing of a beard started using the conditioner at the end of my first beard journey and have been using the conditioner every night since a clean shave and now have some good growth hadn't been itchy at all and I was one to have bad beard itch
I agree w the washing/itching. I have had 2-3 times that itch was driving me crazy.....rinsed w a hand held shower head w copious amounts of water and got better. Some people get skin itching after showering and then apply lotion which makes it disappear. Co Wash is the word....
Each time I would go into lazy mode with not shaving then try to go into growing a full beard mode, the itching and bumps in my lower sideburn areas would drive me nuts to the point I'd shave, altho I even be afraid to do that with the bumps. Funny thing about it is I didn't realize when washing my face that I was subconsciously avoiding my facial hairs til one of my friends said I should scrub the bumpy burns hard cuz he had same issue. That was all I needed to do, and when I started going hard in growing my beard, beard oils and balms were picked up early. I virtually never have itching anymore.
I've never used oil, but I love the utility balm. When I run out of that I'll probably try a styling balm. My beard is much like my 2 year old in that it won't stay where I put it.
I used to get very dry skin under my beard, was almost like dandruff on my face, used exfoliating face wash and beard oil/conditioner daily and that stopped it
Greg's beard is looking good. The first 3 months of growth are always awkward. I wash my beard more than most (3-5 times a week) because I run a lot. Therefore I use both butter and the oil to keep my skin and beard hydrated.
To start, your second theory is the closer to being a scientific fact. But more on that in a minute. I highly suggest that, if you do a beard reboot like Greg, Jack, and myself, you shouldn't deviate from your beard routine. The differences is how much. You should still be using a beard wash to your preference, co-washing as soon as even week 1, and oil/balm from day one. Back to Greg's theory and my reason for suggesting the use of beard oil/balm from day one is simple. At complete shave, your skin produces enough oil to protect itself or keep itself moisturized (providing you're sticking to your old routine of beard wash 1-2 days a week or more if needed). By week 1-2, your hair is long enough that it's soaking up the oil that your skin produces and leaving nothing for the skin, hence the itchiness. Beard oil is really meant for the skin despite its namesake. Also, if you keep to your beard routine from day one, then your beard will be softer and not so coarse in the first few weeks of new growth. One last thing: GREG! Your bald patches are starting to not be so bald. Instead, now it's thin patches. I freaking love the randomness of how beard hair decides if and when it will grow.
I’m mixed race and my beard is quite spilt. On the cheeks and chin it grows pretty straight like most white men, and under my chin and along my jaw line it is quite curly and coarse like most beards in black men, and under the chin where it gets quite curled and maybe tangled is where I sometimes find it itches. Especially since where the hair curls it may rub against the curve down into my neck which also comes into contact with the area where I shave to line up my beard. I use both beard oil and balm as per the needs of my beard, the balm I use helps keep my beard soft and easy to groom and the oil keeps the roots moisturised and adds that nice sheen to it
I'm growing my first beard ever at 62 years old. I'm at 16 days, starting to look like something. I shaved the neck a little high last week, for work, so I'm now letting the rest below catch up. It will probably even out in a few weeks? I wish I could attach a pic for your response. Thanks for the videos. It helps.
I'm an Oil-guy myself. But as i have psoriasis in the scalp, and also slightly on my chin, i need to combine with ointment for that. So sometimes it may get a bit greasy. Depends on the time of month if i've got psoriasis rash or not on my chin. Happens randomly. Didnt have itch this time, but did last time i grew out a beard.
For me it is the sharp end of the hairs irritating my skin and causing it to itch. It's murder from 1wk to 3wks but after that out gets better and only minimal itch here and there
I am almost finishing my 2nd week with growing a beard for the first time. I have much bigger patches as it seems now, but will give time and see what happens. Itching is a problem (serious one), and the most effective solution for me was beard lotion. It is mint, it smells good, cools and soothes the skin and the effect last for a significant amount of time. The lotion gets absorbed more quickly and is not oily/greasy, so it does not cause any inconvenience for me when applying it.
I've never had a problem with itch. I use conditioner every night though. I prefer balms over oil because my beard is super wild and I need something to tame it. I do like oils to add more scent's though.
I use beard shampoo every 2 or 3 days then I use oil which helps with the itch. But I find myself using the oil more when its cold out. But I will use the bread cream about twice a day. To keep it soft and smooth.
Starting to grow my first beard at 38 years of age. Thank you guys for these videos! They are fun to watch and are very informative. I’m about 1 month in and am getting the itch. I don’t have the money to afford your products yet but I soon as I do I’m going to pick some up. I’m using something I believe is called Bronson brothers or BB which is designed for hair growth. It is sort of a balm. It is helping with the edge but I’m not sure if it’s helping or hurting my beard. Do you guys have any insight on this product or have you heard of it?
No insight on this product, however, as long as you're keeping your skin and hair healthy, hydrated, and keep a healthy lifestyle, you'll achieve the best environment for growth. -Randa
Good video but I've heard the reason for dry flaky skin without and with a beard too. Is from drinking too much sugary food like soda and not drinking enough water aka Lou Fergino's power shake (Yup Fergino says water power shake).
I started using beard oil last week and I love it except it doesn't feel like it lasts that long. I'm trying out beard balm and comparing the difference
With my afro beard I prefer Balm, it gets into the skin much easier with the crazy density of the fro on my face. BUT, in summertime I have to switch to oil because I get pretty greasy with the crazy hot sun and humidity of summer In northern Chile. Greg you da man, I stopped watching beardbrand for about three months until I saw you shaved your beard off. Any new watercolors coming soon? I always check for those. Still waiting for young Harrison Ford with a full beard. Or Prince William to restore his handsomeness with a full beard and english Mustache.
wow it is really unbelivable how he can get a fully looking beard with so many patches and you can see close up he doesnt have a thick beard ! nice ill try doing it myself
When I was younger I'd get beard itch for the first few weeks after starting a new beard, but nowadays that's not an issue. When I was a kid I didn't use any beard oils or beard washes , I just used regular shampoo on it and that may have something to do with it.
Greg beard grows so fast would take me a least 5-6 of growth to get to that stage.. Think most men when they want a beard they want to be thick and long in a month and mostly don't have the patience to let it grow because it isnt growing fast enough
