Thanks for Watching!
I love ally
In this video I install the subaru motor onto the Vanagon transmission as well as a high torque starter, cooling lines, and a few other trick parts. Some modification and fabrication also took place.

...nice idea to swap. I'd like to also see a Suby tranny installed with a reverse gear. cuz, the VW gearing is like 4k rpm /60 mph ! so, it other needs another gear or a Suby tranny. I stay faithful with the boxer engines, air cooled VWs n now with 2 subies I luv.

I've herd this is a much more reliable motor than the stock one.

let's hope so.... most subies go about 200K, I have seen a few at 300, but not many. The 2.1s have also gone 200K, so I don't know...subie timing belts need changed about every 100K miles..I like the 2X the horsepower.

I went RMW with my whole swap 97 impreza motor into an 84. they sell the single port exhaust if you don't want to build your own lol. I love their aluminum hand welded coolant tank those plastic ones always leaked on me and I used a mitty vac to find all the other coolant leaks . I was happy I put a new gas tank and steel coolant lines in. that plastic fuel line connector in the firewall is prone to leaking it's better if you just bypass it. love the build cool to see another way of doing it.

Did you replace the clutch throw-out (release) bearing while you were in there? A known weakness in VWs.

I’m doing a similar swap. 96 dual port 2.5 into an 85 with the KEP kit. I went with the smallcar reverse coolant manifold and it made things easy. Everything els is exactly the same as yours!

That’s awesome. Did you convert the wiring harness yourself?

@@flossymissiles I did my own the FIRST time, lost a whole weekend doing it, but it was not 100% finished, but it ran. Next time, I sent it out and it is a just beautiful....right length, wrapped and everything labeled.... bleeding the air out was my challenge and feel that is what killed the first subie

Love your videos man!! As Lee Jensen mentioned, it might be a good idea to remove the plastic fuel connector through the firewall which is pretty brittle. Looking forward for part 2!

CoolVideo Although i have not had a Vanagan as of yet , i am a big fan especially of them with the Subie Conversions and i’ve had my share of VWs over the years both AirCooled and Water Cooled i like the Power increase and actually really love the Subaru Exhaust Notes they can Produce with the right Exhaust system of course I know that Vanagans are not going to be the IdealHot Rod but i like that these Conversions can get them up to typical Highway Speeds and maybe even capable of pulling a Small Boat or Trailer inthe old days we used to pull Aircooled engines using the old Grocery Store Shopping Buggy with the Basket part removed that was the perfect height for rolling the Aircooled motors in and out of the cars and Buses without the ability to raise and lower the height like your lift Table how we got around that was having a group of freinds lift and lower the vehicles to get the motors into the right position either in or out of the Engine Compartments if you left the Buggy handle on the frame and Wheels it allowed you a easy way to roll the engine around and another neat trick was you could store them under small Workbenches on both sides of a one car garage and still park the vehicle in th Garage ! we just built simple Plywood and 2X4 Workbenches My Old Man was a longtime fan of Aircooled VWs he had bought brand new Beetles in 1958,63 , and 67 , in the 1980s i gave him a 73 Beetle i paid $200.00 and a set of used Car tires i had to a old Coworker that had this Rusty ,Crusty Bug that was barely running (but running ) and my Dad and i pulled the engine and put a cheap $127.00 Brazilian refresh kit that came with new Pistons ,Ring ,and all new Gaskets as the car was intended for my younger Sister tomuse for going to and fromCollege as a inexpensive car for her ,many people told me those kits were Junk and that may be true but ironically that same engine is still running 35 years later ! it’s been in so many Vehicles i’ve lost count after 12 BTW i grew upminSouthFlorida and the VW Community was a tight knit one my Best Freinds Uncle was a well known VW /Audi ,Posche Certified Mechanic (now retired) and a group of my old HighSchool undies built Sand Rails for several years and between all of them they kept tabs on my old motors whereabouts over the years We don’t have a good way of really knowing the actualMiles on that one but it’s guesstimated a few hundred Thousand ! the Body and Pan have been long gone

Heyy. How do you change the motor schaft turning direction ? Something i never understood. The originsl engine was in the ftont, not its in the back backwards. How does the van doesnot drive backwards now :) ?
@flossymissiles
@flossymissiles 3 года назад
You don’t have to, somehow it all works
@DanTheManIOM
@DanTheManIOM 3 года назад
Do both flywheels rotate clockwise ? ....the challenge would be if you installed the subaru 5 speed. Enter Todd@ subarugears in Australia, he sells a reverse, flipped ring and pinion, you take the transmission apart, flip bearings, etc (watch his videos), and then your subie 5 speed can work after you mod the shifter linkage. I was going to go that route, but said, F it, I need to get some trips on it first...
@umitakbey8187
@umitakbey8187 3 года назад
All the engines apparently turn the same direction; counterclockwise. That means, now i know, you canturnaround the engine to fit to a T3 :). Still dont understsnd the gearbox, which needs the direction change with that schaft turn change.

@@umitakbey8187 Go search Subaru Gears, Todd does at least two videos on this, one with a customer, and one in his own garage. It will make more sense after you see that. I took a transmission apart since it had 200K miles on it, it was very interesting....

Which subaru engine is this ?

Hi, thanks for your amazing videos!!, one question, your subaru donor was automatic or manual, is it possible to use an automatic donor on a manual vanagon ? What else is needed to do the conversion other than the engine, computer, harness and the installation kit ? Thanks for your support 🙌🏼
