Brother… It’s official. You are a frick’n mechanic kid. A tip of the hat and a high salute to you sir for an amazingly well done job. Speak as one mechanic to another, you rocked this shifter linkage job like a seasoned pro. It’s true what they say about Westfalia owners, that they’re all mechanics, but you sir shine high above the pack. Congratulations on a job well done.

If you havent already make sure you replace the little machine nut that holds the lever ball/elbow on the transaxle with a new one. They arn't meant to be reused and can come loose. I found out the hard way.. mine came loose and the elbow came off while driving and i got stuck in gear which also stripped the spline on the transaxle a little. Not fun!

Nice work, as usual! On the surface, this one seems like it should be easy...but it looks like there are a lot of steps and small parts. Maybe in reality it's not so bad. I think I'd have to take a lot of photos as reminders of how things go back together. ha.

Haha yeah. So many little parts that all go back on a specific way and in a specific order. It honestly wasn’t such a difficult job, just time consuming. Definitely had to go back and watch what I had filmed a few times to see how some of the parts were on there.

Thanks for this vid, it was a big help. BUT at 14:50 it looks like you tucked the bushing boots inside the flange with the bushing. I tried this but it bound up and ripped the boots. I just undid the flanges and pulled them out and it's working. Did I miss something, maybe I got different boots. I did lots else wrong BTW, in summary because I didn't mark the parts carefully enough when I took it apart. Had to flip my u joint, and repress the shift cup onto the correct side of the rear shaft..... Duh. So the mistakes are mine and the video was a huge help. Thanks again, looking forward to more!
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 Год назад
Glad to hear the video helped! I think I did tuck the boots inside the flanges next to the bushings. I think I heard somewhere that some need boots and some don't. and some need grease and some don't. I'm not sure though. My bushings seemed to fit into the flanges nicer with the boots, like they kind of popped into place and the boots kept them secure. Yup, I've been there haha. I mark everything and take a bunch of pictures any time I'm taking anything off the van now lol.

This has been quite helpful. Question: Those 2 bellows you show at approx: 13;38... I can see the part number is 251-711-16?F but Go Westy doesn't have a part number similar to that. Can you share the correct part number for those bellows and from whom you got them from?

I got the the parts separately, but VanCafe does sell a full kit here: vancafe.com/shifter-system-rebuild-kit--the-whole-enchilada/ . The full kit has been out of stock for a while now though. You can use that kit as a list to source parts from VanCafe, GoWesty and other websites.

Great videos man....thank you so much for the help....Got a question for you....did you ever hear about "hot Start Problem"?... I have a 1985 Westfalia and works fine...but now once I drive it around and gets warm it work with not problems...but once I turn off the engine it does not starts again ... Only after it finally cools down it works again...I saw several comment on Samba but no one could give a straight resolution for the problem,....Do you have any suggestion or a link that could help me out? thank you for your knowledge
@gottasplit5707
@gottasplit5707 Год назад
I haven't dealt with this problem personally, but it could be an issue with a temp sensor or something. One of those problems that you need to check all the sensors to figure out.
@jeffkovacs2823
@jeffkovacs2823 Год назад
I'd definitely agree to check the blue 2 terminal temp sensor on the waterpump/thermostat assembly. Very common to cause hard/no stary conditions. Buy a name brand not cheap Amazon special. Also clean/replace all of your ground wires. They cause all sorts of erratic issues with the wbx engines. On the 85 you should also have the single throttle switch. Make sure it clicks when moved just off idle and at full throttle positions. Also check timing is correct. All easy stuff thay should be considered regular maintenance on these old vehicles. From there if those don't solve it it gets a little more involved with idle control boxes and whatnot.

@@Coach_Rolando gowesty.com/products/temperature-sensor-for-fuel-injection I believe this is the one @jeffkovacs2823 is taking about. You can also test your current one first to be sure it is the issue with an ohm meter.
@jeffkovacs2823
@jeffkovacs2823 Год назад
Yep thats the one! I'd buy it from gowesty or vancafe. Both trusted sources. Also yes could test with a ohm meter if you have the Bently manual and a good meter and some knowhow. Make sure to test when hot tho since that's when the issue is occurring. Th3 Bentley should have all the specs with corresponding Temps
