• Linear vs Logistic Reg...
Official tour of lyx • Introduction to Latex ...

I've been using LyX for quick/realtime notes for many years. I'd make different shortcuts for different courses: One I found useful is a shortcut to make a 1x1 \bmatrix and then I can use existing shortcuts to add rows/columns as needed.

The good thing is if you don't use ERT and insert random things in the preamble, you can't make a runtime error.

Nooooooooooo, you have to be a vim wizard, create a giant list of personal macros and get your WPM above 120 to type LaTeX in real time!!!1!!11 /s

This is really helpful, thanks! I meant to ask you about this during MATH4060 last winter but never got around to it. I find writing latex sometimes (usually) quite slow, probably because of the typing but also because of the need to constantly recompile to see if everything looks okay. Unfortunately on a lot of assignments I need to use R so it makes more sense to write in the Rmarkdown document. Too bad they don't have this sort of functionality!

I really like colab for the mix of (not too heavy) latex equations plus code. You can do R in colab too! (Although if you have to do Rmarkdown this is not helpful advice!)

This looks interesting, I'll deffinitely give it a try. I mostly write reports in Mathematica and (if needed) export them to LaTeX. Then I paste my usual \usepackage things at the front to change font and other things. But there are usually some things, that don't export correctly and I have to fix them manually. This one seems kind of similar to Mathematica in terms of typing equations and souch. Didn't know before, that such editor exists, thanks.

One thing I didn't mention in the video is that under settings in LyX, there is an option for "latex premable" where you can add in all the \usepackages you want to use

Thanks, this will also be usefull.

You can link it to Mathematica so that things like equation solving can be done without leaving LyX

@@diribigal I've never heard of this! Is there somewhere we can find more info about this?

Will try it out! Can you post the shortcuts (also prob. focused)?
@mcnica89

wiki.lyx.org/Tips/FrequentlyUsedShortcuts#toc5 has a good list (actually I learned a few new ones here!) Basically the thing to keep on mind is that there is shortcuts to get INTO a math mode or certain environment (like a section or itemize), and then there is a different list once you are in math mode

I'll have to try this out! I've been using vs code with mactex, so I compile my document each time I want to see what I have done.
@mcnica89

I absolutely lose my mind and panic when I miss a single bracket somewhere and latex refuses to compile and just says "there's a problem somewhere, good luck!". Not having to compile to see the math is truly wonderful!

What are you doing between 01:17 and 01:18 to "close" the math display mode? My equations stay blue and wont remove the empty boxes when using multi-line equations
@mcnica89
@mcnica89 Год назад
You just have to click out of the "math mode" (I think pressing enter would work to to leave?) If you later click back onto the equation it would turn blue again and then you can edit the math.

Thank you so much ...helped me a lot.. just today I shifted from overleaf to lyx for better UI. Your video just pushed me further to use lyx more

May I have your templates? The templates I found online were all hard to use.

Ok, I copy pasted in a version of the template that has all the commands except for \mathbb \mathbf \mathfrak (otherwise it wouldn't fit in the comment). You should be able to copy/paste this into a text file and then name it "template.lyx" and it will hopefully work!
@gordoteton2203
@gordoteton2203 Год назад
how do you make it autocompile? my lyx files are always with the blue font and the boxes in it
@mcnica89
@mcnica89 Год назад
If you click out of the blue box it should turn black. Note that it doesnt "autocompile"; if you want a pdf you still have to compile. Its just that the view you see of the editor pre-renders any math things for you.

They are just the default ones! I do however put a lot of shortcut commands in my template files at the top of the page
