Hi Daniel, Thanks for the video, it's great! I have been teaching my horse, Israel, to bow, he's doing really well, but we have run into a little problem. So, I have a rope around his pastern, I ask him to give me his foot, then to back up and bow, he does it great. The problem is is that I have to hold his foot up for him, not him hold it. Do you have any ideas?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 5 месяцев назад
Hey there! That transition can take some time. Towards the end of the video I show using a crop to encourage the horse to lift his leg up. If you teach the horse that several taps on his leg means he needs to lift it up first. Then keep asking him to lift it until he bows. Takes time and patience but they get it eventually 😊 Hope that helps!

A question, where would you get the rope with the release ring? Doesn’t seem like there’s many in Australia
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 дня назад
I get mine from the USA. What part of Australia are you from? I’ll be in Oz in two weeks and I could potentially bring you the exact rope from this video if you want it. If that sounds like an interesting idea then email me at HorsePerfect.tv@gmail.com

@@HorsePerfect I’m in the northern eastern region of NSW. Also another question, in your video about teaching them on how to back up. When I used the stick and the rope she thinks I’m going to lunge her and starts walking next to me. I have a bit of a hard time with it cause last time she did that she kicked me. How would I let her understand I was her going back rather than lunging?

Q: My horse goes straight into a lay down when I try this. I’m not too bothered because I was planning on teaching him to lay down anyway. But in the future, If I just want him to bow without laying down, what can I do? Is it too late? Very grateful for this video! Thank you
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 3 месяца назад
Hey! That’s kinda a good problem to have! It’s sometimes difficult to get a horse to lie down after the bow so it’s nice that that part is already easy! Do you have a cue to end the trick? That’s important because then right before he lies down then you can tell him “good boy” or something to end the trick. Just as soon as he bows. Then he should stand up normally again and learn that the bow is not always connected to a lie down. Hope that helps!

I don't have a quick release ring. Do you think it would be safe to use a lunge line and use the loop at the one end of the lunge line to wrap around the legs and around the back ?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 месяца назад
Yes I think so! So long as your horse is calm and won’t run away from you or something.
@janinetollot209
@janinetollot209 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your reply. I've tried it a couple of times and it should be OK. It will come loose simply by letting the lunge line go. I'm uber-cautious as she's still a bit wobbly on her feet and she more falls down the bows down lol

One question when my horse ships backwards he doesn’t shift he starts backing up instead of shifting and I’m only 11 so I can’t exactly put my weight to keep his leg up. What do you have for that?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 21 день назад
Use the rope around his belly like I did with the first horse then he can hop backwards but eventually if you hold on you’ll get him to do it. It’s not hard to hold it there when you wrap it around his belly first 👍🏼

I tried getting my mare to bow but she refused. At first she was very resistant to the rope around her foot and would pull her foot out in front of her to try to make me let go and then once I got her to hold it okay I tried to get her to back up into the bow but she was just jump backwards on her other front foot to keep from bowing. How do so fix that??
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 года назад
Great question! Well done for making progress with your mare! Jumping backwards on three legs is very normal. If you have the rope wrapped around the horses belly it shouldn't be too hard to stay with the horse and to keep waiting for her to bow. She won't be able to hop backwards for long maybe 4-7 hops before she will need to rest and will begin to lean down on the leg that is tied up. Remember to stop and reward her every time she tries or does it a little bit! Let me know how it goes!

Unfortunately will not work for my horse. Ive done exactly as you have. She keeps putting her forehead down on the ground instead of forward. Ended up quitting midway because she was getting frustrated. Esp when asking for the shifting backwards. She kept turning/pivoting on her hind end. Anytime i put the rope under her belly she started to kick witj a back foot.

Sorry to hear you’re having a hard time with your horse! One thing that’s really important is that your horse needs to have a solid foundation of trust and respect already before you try to teach tricks! If your horse kicks at all it tells me she’s got very bad ground manners so maybe try the exercises in this playlist and then come back and try the bowing again and I bet she’ll do better! @@HorsePerfect I'll give it a shot. She's got some basis with a bow but not as clean or easy as this one. As well as a few other easy tricks. I'll see what I can do with the ground work.

What happens when ur farrier picks up your horses foot and the horse bows
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 года назад
Good question! The part where we ask the horse to back up while he has his leg up is what makes it a different cue. Working with him with his butt against a wall should fix that because he can’t back up and lean into the bow. You can also encourage him to lean forward by pulling on his halter. Hope that helps!
@SG_BarrelRacing

I tried this, I got one or two good half bows, but she tries to put her tied leg down and when she realizes she can’t, she rears. Is there a way to fix that?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
That’s a pretty common reaction to this… you said she did one or two good half bows so that’s a great sign! I would just stop before she rears and then the next day try again and get 3 half bows and 1 3/4 bow and then the next day 2 half bows 2 1/4 bows and 1 full bow. Just keep working with her. She can’t rear for long she has to come back down and when she does just start again.

Ok, thank you! I will try this when I go to the barn over the next few days :)

Hey there, I have a question, I am trying to teach my horse this trick but when I ask him to lean back with the halter, he ignores me. Do you have any advice?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 11 месяцев назад
Work on his backing up with the halter! It will help reinforce to him that you need him to move back whenever you apply backwards pressure on the halter 😊
@koriroach7156
@koriroach7156 2 года назад
My horse tries to escape any pressure that comes towards him, so when I pull back on his lead rope/reins, whatever I use for pulling back he will root. He throws his head down to get me to let go of the rope/reins. He's gotten a little better, but how would I help that? Second question, when he goes in his bow, how do I keep him down? He's getting pretty good at it but he won't stay down for longer than 2 seconds. He pulls himself up..
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 года назад
Hi Kori, sounds like your horse can have an attitude sometimes 😅 Start by teaching him all the exercises in the Video I made about how to get your horse to respect you. That should help you with his attitude. Its very common for the bow to be quick at first...Start to ask him to stay down longer by having him bow again as soon as he wants to get up. Keep telling him to bow until he stays for 5 seconds and then tell him to get up. Its important that you tell him when to get up so that he knows you will end the trick and its not his job to decide when its over. Soon it will be 8 seconds and then 20 and then 30 just keep practicing!

This is a great method but I have one issue with this. When you tie the rope around their foot and stomach and try to get them down they can cross their feet and almost get injured like my horse did. My horse is okay but it was a close call!
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
Hi there, Thanks for your comment! I’ve never had that happen before. Is it possible you wrapped the rope the wrong direction around the horse? If so that would definitely cause a safety risk! Have a closer look at how I did it. Over the top of the back and then back under the belly. Not under the belly and over the back. Hope that helps!
@Akaonosuri
@Akaonosuri Год назад
I wrapped it the same way you did. She lifted her foot but after a while she went over and crossed it and almost fell. I don’t know how to avoid that happening.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
Ok. If you make sure the leg is pulled up all the way to the horses belly then there will be no room for the horse to put her other leg in there. If it’s too loose then I could see that happening.
@RaagaA460

The famous horse whisperer Peter Pfister in Germany caused a deadly horse accident using a leg rope to make a horse bow. It is important to pay close attention and to accustom horses very slowly to ropes around their legs, especially if you are not a professional. I personally taught the bow without any ropes, but needed a few months. It even took a few years till my pony happily bowed for a longer period. That was okay for me because extreme stretches are difficult and can even cause harm in the long run when done too quickly.. That's why I personally would prefer the slow way.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Год назад
No worries! Every horse is different and every horseman has their own methods. Patience and going slow is never a bad thing. Sometimes I wish my clients would give me more time to work with their horses.
