I teach online science classes for homeschooler in Alaska (shameless plug for my channel ;-)). Hands-on science is the best, but must come with teaching scientific method and concepts. I see a lot of kits that just show flashy experiments without talking through the concepts of how the thing works or how math is used used to understand results. It is a real shame that true interdisciplinary curricula are rare. As the kids get older, it can be worth looking into getting a college student tutor from a local college or community college science department. A solid STEM education gives your kid the leg up in the professional world later on (I was homeschooled and recently earned an MS in physics and thank my dad everyday for pulling me out of public school when my math education was suffering.)

I teach second grade at a public school and we use Mystery Science. Every lesson has a hands on activity and I find it’s very engaging for my students. I think you could definitely use this for homeschooling as well.

We are going to Target and buy a butterfly habitat there! I saw that in one of your videos last week. How did we not know about that?! My 8 year old daughter will be taking Botany next year at co-op, she is excited! Co-op has been such an amazing resource for us. Don't remember what curriculum we will be using though, it says in our registration packet. I'm so glad I found your channel, I've found a lot of people's channels overwhelming! This is our 3rd year into homeschooling. I don't prefer all those expensive curriculum packages, I like to pull curriculum from a lot of different places for a lot cheaper.

I'm so glad you like my channel and it isn't overwhelming. Homeschooling can be a lot to handle sometimes but I try to keep it as simple as possible and share the ups-and-downs. Yes, definitely get one of the butterfly kits! It's such a fun and educational experience!

We used Sonlight science this year and we really enjoyed it - it worked well for us! It’s uses a workbook with questions, several Usborne books and lots of hands on things as well! But this one looks very good too - intriguing! Now I’m in a dilemma about next year 😂 Has your youngest daughter ever read the Zoey and Sassafras books? It’s a 6 book series about a girl and her cat and each one has a different science theme. We are on the last one and love them!

@aplacetonest 5 лет назад
haha Don't you hate that? People always ask me if I'm going to various homeschool conventions and I'm like, "NO! I don't need to see any other curriculum!" lol I've heard of those books but we've never read them. I'll definitely have to look into it. Thanks! :)

We're adding the ladybug kit to our curriculum this year too. I finally overcame my fears last year and tried the butterflies and it was awesome.... now, the ants... I don't think I can do that one. :-)

Thank you. Is this the same program as BJU Science distant learning? Is this easy to teach and understand scheduled lessons? I am a first time homeschooling mom of my 10 year old daughter. I am presently using Abeka Science and Health 4 but for me it is challenging to teach other than reading about insects for weeks which is fun and interesting but too long. I am deciding if I should register her for the distant learning BJU or is this a reasonable, easy program to teach. Science is exciting but not my strong subject.

I love Home Science Tools! Though I don't think their kits come with everything for all curriculum unfortunately T_T. For example I had looked into Real Science Odyssey for my girls this Spring/Summer for Science but their designated kit only had a handful of the harder to find items for the RSO level we wanted to do. BUT if you went through their site you could sort of make your own kit by adding everything you could find from the materials list and that would work out well and get you a good chunk of the items that way. It's just the actual designated/labeled kits aren't always complete so it's a good idea to really look and see what comes in the kits before buying. It's really awesome the BJU kit worked out though! Thanks for the video (:
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 5 лет назад
I'm not sure about Real Science Odyssey but for BJU it came with pretty much everything. The things it didn't include were things that most people have so that's nice. It's great not to have to run around looking for this and that. Did you end up using Real Science Odyssey?
@Pumpkin.Queen.
@Pumpkin.Queen. 5 лет назад
@@aplacetonest Yes it definitely makes it easier to have one place to get materials ^_^ And no :/ Though it looks like a great curriculum to us with all the experiments/projects, instead we opted to pull our own thing together for topics we were interested in. For this Spring/Summer we picked Geology and Astronomy so we're going to be using books, Kids Discover Magazines, excavation type kits, a rock and mineral sample set, a box of geodes that we'll break open, relevant games etc. And of course outdoor exploring and collecting our own samples or sky viewing when we start the Astronomy part. We also have a river we like to go to every summer that we usually end up collecting rocks from that'll be utilized a ton for our geology stuff. We're starting our science unit May 6th and on the 4th we were excited to find out a city only a couple of hours away from us is doing a rock, gem and mineral show. A perfect event (and perfect timing lol) to introduce the geology unit I thought (:

My inspiration for doing a unit type of study came from watching Hana at Pepper and Pine here on YT. The units she pulls together are amazing and very inspiring. We do the same kind of units for history and find a ton of great resources to use at Rainbow Resource for both science and history.

Question for you. We are currently using TGTB science but I’m really liking BJU and what I’ve seen of it. I have a 2,4,6,8 th graders. I’m thinking of pairing up my two youngest and two oldest for science...do you think that will work?? This is our first year homeschooling! 😎🥳
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 3 года назад
I think that would work as long as you have a student workbook for each child. I like that BJU is a more traditional curriculum vs. TGATB which is only one topic at a time.

I know this is an old video, but do you feel like the teacher’s guide was necessary to purchase? I see on the homeschool science tool website that it isn’t included with the set!

It's not necessary but very helpful and will make your life a lot easier since it's scripted and includes all the answers.

Have you always used Bob Jones for science? Or have tried The Good and the Beautiful science curriculums?
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 5 лет назад
No, we used TGATB for a few science units but I wanted to switch to something more traditional and student-led. There is still a little bit of teaching involved with Bob Jones but it requires a lot more independent reading and work on my daughter’s part.
@Season4Reason1
@Season4Reason1 5 лет назад
Do you still recommend The Good and the Beautiful science? Are you finding that Bob Jones science is better? Thanks!
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 5 лет назад
Yes, I do but they are completely different programs. TGATB is designed to be parent-led without a typical student textbook or workbook. I switched to BJU because I wanted something that depended less on me teaching, although there is still some instruction, and required much more reading on my daughter's part. For that purpose, it's working out very well. BJU is much more of a traditional program while TGATB is more family style. I hope that helped.

My son wants secular science, so we use the non-religious kits from Timberdoodle for him. My daughter is Christian, but also has more secular science beliefs like me (my thought is that God’s day could be a billion years and he was the one to stir the pot, so to speak, to evolve us, and gave us the Bible to give us a way for our very small minds to have a way to understand his big plans and so much more) so we use The Good and the Beautiful for most everything except math because they don’t have her level.
