One of the scary things about homeschooling is thinking about how much it might cost to purchase homeschool curriculum. In today's video I'm sharing how you can homeschool on a budget with my favorite inexpensive curriculum. These programs have been a favorite in our homeschool day for quite some time and for us, they work really well and cost very little!

Thank you for the info. Very helpful. The Word a Day is something I will surely implement. I was looking into Wordly Wise but the long list of Vocab words was scaring me for my first grader. Now, I know there is an easier, just as effective alternative.

We love All About Reading! I learned about it from your channel. My daughter is thriving on it. She did ABeka in her private Christian school and it was too much paper pencil work for her learning style. She actually gets a twinkle in her eyes when we do the AAR activities. They are colorful, attractive and fun for her. We just got Evan Moor spelling, and I think we will look into the spectrum reading products after she finishes AAR☺ your videos are sooo very helpful. God bless you!

Hey Becky! Great suggestions. I agree with you on spelling. I looked at all the “fancy” spelling curriculum and started the Evan Moor “Building Spelling Skills” based on your suggestion last year. It works for us! A new curriculum we are adding this year is from The Critical Thinking Co. We are really liking Science Detective (a quick and interesting way to add science to our elementary level homeschool.) Also their “Editor in Chief” “Mathematical Reasoning” and “Balance Benders” are good too. Thanks for your videos! We always look forward to a new one. 😃

I have lucked out finding the teacher guides (used) on amazon from BJU English and Math-with the cd-roms. And the student workbooks have been cheaper there too. I do have harcourt science and art, also extremely cheap on amazon. Our local library usually has great reading books for children, can't beat the .50 price tag and no tax. We use the spelling lists form k12reader and have found a ton of free materials from teacherspayteachers. Also Ollie's will have Spectrum and other similar materials at low prices, along with art supplies and reading books.

I've seen quite a few home schooling videos, as I'm looking for a way to homeschool our 7 year old son in light of the poor quality local school, the high cost of private school and the dangers during the pandemic of every school, and without a doubt Becky, this channel is my favorite. You explain why you love the courses you recommend, you're clear, and you get to the point. I will come back for more, thank you! and subscribed :) do you have any thoughts on Time4Learning or Powerhomeschool? our son is super smart, and one concern i have with any program, is if he is not challenged enough, he will get bored. I'm planning to work with him for a couple of hours in the morning, and then my wife will work with him for a couple of hours in the afternoon. and we plan to mix in play time, outdoor time, exercise, creative stuff, art, music to break up the day. Thoughts? Thank you!
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 3 года назад
That is so nice of you! Thank you so much! I don't have any experience with those two programs but I like that you're planning to mix in other activities to break up the day. I do think that kids that do 100% online programs can tend to get bored so I think you're on the right track. :)

Time4Learning is good but I didn't feel there were enough extra worksheets in any of the subjects. My son got super bored with it. We eventually stopped this past January and he is thriving with textbook learning instead.

Thank you for this video. I feel like I’m constantly wanting to jump around curriculum which I know isn’t helpful to my kids. This is my 2 year homeschooling. We have using TT with great success. Everything else I’ve changed several times. I know I need to stick with something to see if it’s working. Any advice? Will this desire eventually go away as I homeschool longer?
@aplacetonest
@aplacetonest 4 года назад
There are some programs that I wouldn't dream of switching, like TT, but there are others that I am always looking for "something better." I don't think that desire will ever go away but recognizing that habit helps me to avoid switching very often. Depending on what it is, it could be something you could add to your current curriculum without having to switch altogether. I recently did that with my oldest's language arts program. We love TGATB for high school language arts but I added Essentials in Writing for extra practice. Otherwise, I try to stick with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule! lol

Hi Becky! Im definitely checking out the Teaching Textbooks math curriculum. Our daughter is 9, and hates doing her math work. I feel like its too repetitive, and sometimes a little overwhelming for her. I was wondering if you've done a video on record keeping. That's why I'm afraid to veer away from the boxed curriculums. They send me all the paperwork I need for recording grades and attendance. If I could find a way to do this on my own, I would gladly switch over all their subjects!
@tumaestra8458
@tumaestra8458 4 года назад
I know you are asking Becky but I wanted to answer you. I reside in state of PA one of most restrictive states in the country when it comes to homeschooling. According to what I know generally, I've been doing this for about 9 -10 years now. All you need is to keep some of the work your children have completed. Preferably, some from each quarter to show progression. you also need to keep daily attendance, and books read aloud and read by your child. You can go to askpauline.com there you can find forms to help you see what others do to keep attendance very simple keep a calendar and check off each day you school. Also, There are forms for many other things. There should be a similar website on your state. You can even create your own forms at home. Just title yearly home school attendance for such and such child.. and check off dates. as long as is documented and at the end of year IF your state requires it a teacher confirms you child has received the equivalent of his/her grades education. You'll be fine. You should talk to other home school moms in your state see what they do. I can assure you there's a lot more flexibility than you think. When I started I started with an umbrella school which provided transcripts and had a teacher contact us every 2 weeks to see how we were doing, I had to send all the work completed every two weeks. The stress was high. The teacher did not truly help much at all, aside from grading the material I feel I wish she would have been more of a mentor... she was not. But it did help me see what needed to be done I learned eventually and now do all my teaching on my own. I do my curriculum but from different sources to fit my childrens' needs.

For math, I don't have to keep records because TT keeps grades for me. Our online history program keeps grades, too. For my youngest, I'm not required to keep grades so I don't. For my oldest, I have a spreadsheet for her report card. Have you seen this video yet?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--bckN5crPMc.html

What would you say would be your favorite math curriculum for early math before they're able to use TTB? I have a first grader and Kinder as well but our 5th grader will do great with TTB and I love the online aspect for both of us!
@aplacetonest

That was a struggle for us, too. We did Math U See for one year and Masterbooks' "Math for a Living Education" after that. If I had to choose between those two I'd choose Masterbooks because it's much cheaper than Math U See but still uses manipulatives to teach math concepts. Also, have your first grader take the TT placement test sooner than later because you might be surprised when they're actually ready for TT Math 3. My youngest started it at the end of 2nd grade. I hope that helps. :)

Is "TT" only available for Math and older kids? We are going to be homeschooling a 5 year old for Kindergarten level next year? We are already doing some things, but don't allow the pressures of the world and family and friends to make us think that our kid has to be schooled starting at the age of 3 and our kid has to be pre k, then kindergarten blah blah blah. we're doing it at our own rate at our own pace for what we feel is best for our kid .
