I live in the Midwest. I keep all my houseplants outside as much of the year as possible, I just bring everything inside for winter. Anyway, for those who keep their shamrock plants outdoors, make sure you leave the flowers on. The bees go crazy for the flowers.

Ive had my two purple shamrocks for 23 yrs and the little finnish lady that gave them to me had them easily 30-40 yrs. I love them,in the winter they go real skimpy,but come spring and there outside all summer they get so big and bushy,will try to post a pic.

I’ve had the same Shamrock plant given to me when my Mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2/2003. She passed away 5 months later but the plant is still growing 19 years later! I have given parts of “her” to other family and I am getting ready to re-pot again! Loved this very informative video!

I am so excited to hear your MIL has a shammrock that she has cared for most of her life. That is so encouraging. I have a purple one that sits on my kitchen window sill. I've had it for 6 years now. I didn't know how to care for it until recently. My efforts have paid off. I also recently rescued two pots of green shammrocks from a local store. They were at the end of the season. Poor babies were dry to the bone. I brought them home, gave them water and placed them in the same window sill. They are starting to perk up. Thanks for the encouragement. I may need to put my shammrocks in my will since they live so long. LOL

That's so awesome! I've been wanting the purple oxalis for such a long time. I can't seem to find them locally, so I might have to purchase one online. They really are great plants and make me so happy when I look at their cute little flowers. I love how the leaves open and close during the day and nighttime 🤗 I couldn't believe it my mother in law told me she had this plant that long. It's over 50 yrs old and that's so amazing to me! I'm going to share another video soon, just as soon as I can catch up around here. Thanks for sharing, I love to hear what everyone's growing. Have a beautiful day☘

Hey Stacey I have one too and it's the same species as purple shamrock and in Peru its grown as a leaf and root vegetable and they make tea of the flowers. So plant some in organic soil and enjoy a few leaves in your soup or salad or use a few flowers for tea or as a garnish, you can eat the tiny rhizomes which taste like "oca" which is a related species but you probably wouldn't wanna uproot your plant to eat it. One warning, they said on internet sites I could plant it outdoors in shade in Northern California and that worked fine in the shade of trees, in the shade of roses it caught rose rust when water dripped onto it from the roses and it killed the plants in days. So, keep away from roses and if you see any signs of leaf fungus that could be rose rust spray it right away! That is a cool plant because it grows at high altitude and sea level both and has vitamin C in levels that made sailors transport it around the world in little pots so they wouldn't get scurvy.

You can use a drip coffee pot filter in your empty pot before adding the potting soil. It will keep the soil from coming out through the drain holes . I use the unbleached coffee filters.

Your just a delightful person aren't you. Why so rude.. Look, the way you grow is the way you grow. You don't live in florida nor grow here so how could you possibly know how plants react in our weather. We hardly get any temps below 40° in the wintertime so I'm not sure where your family lives.. If you don't have anything nice to say, than please keep your comments to yourself or you'll no longer be welcome here. If you don't like what I do than you don't have to follow my channel or take my advice. I never tell anyone they have to listen, I just share what works for me, hoping to make it easier in someone else. Take what you want and leave the rest. No need to say I don't know what I'm talking about.. thats just not your place to even say about anyone.. There is enough hatred, judgment and B.S. going on in this world as it is, we don't need to be rude, ungrateful and disrespectful like you have been. You do whatever it is that works for you. I like to try different methods and do things a little different but it doesn't mean that I'm wrong. Everyone has their own way of doing things and your entitled to do things the way you wish to.

Last summer I repotted my shamrock because I left it with a neighbor and I think they overwatered it because the leaves weren’t doing too well. Fast forward to now and it will grow, then die within a few weeks then grow again and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it, but I’m determined!! After watching your video, I learned about the rhizomes which explains a lot. There are a lot of them sticking above the dirt so I think that is why the plant is so unhappy. I’m going to repot it again later today and make sure everything is buried properly! Thanks so much!
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 3 года назад
Yes, that could definitely be the culprit. I've done it before so don't worry 😉 It shouldn't hurt them if it's corrected soon.. sometimes I just add more soil on top, instead of repotting the whole thing, but it all depends on how fast it's growing and if it needs more room. I usually repot mine 1x a yr to reset all the rhizomes. They tend to grow better and I always get more plants out of the deal because the rhizomes will break off as your repotting. Don't worry if this happens, you can just plant them up and propagate them😉 Usually I go really light on watering the first time, until the rhizomes callous over and heal. Than I resume ny normal watering schedule. Moistening the soil all the way through and letting it dry out inbetween each watering.. I feed 1 x per month and this helps to generate lots of leaf growth and should also start flowering for you really soon😉

Hi. I am also a new subscriber and I am so glad I found your channel. Simple and right to the point. Best yet. Anyway by chance I purchased my first shamrock 2 weeks ago (it was the last plant sitting alone with very few blooms). I love it. It is so dainty, but the leaves are turning yellow and limpy. Hello there! Thank you so much for your kind words, it's really great to meet you. Honestly, there are probably many things you could do in this case. Shamrocks are extremely sensitive to a rapid change in environment, but extremely hardy and easily bounce back. In my experience shamrocks will usually get shocked about 1- 2 weeks after I bring a new plant home. Even though it might have been in similar growingconditions, they still tend to loose most of their leaves when you first bring them home due to the change in their environment. It should settle in pretty quickly given the right conditions, luckily, they're pretty easy to grow. Some people grow them in 4 to 6 hrs of morning direct sun or dappled sun through blinds near a windowsill, there are many places you can grow these, both indoors and out. If growing outdoors some protection is necessary, especially in the summertime, and I decrease the direct sunlight significantly to about 1 to 2 hrs a day in the early a.m. (with the protection of a shade cloth because I live in Florida and the sun is pretty intense here).. they can also survive (not thrive) in indirect, but bright light, as long as it's pretty bright.. I have them both indoors and outside. Outside, they sit on my patio getting about 3 hrs of morning sun behind a shade cloth and the rest of the day indirect bright light.. they are going crazy lol.. I have some indoors that are growing and healthy, but not thriving because of the lack of really bright light and air flow which helps the stems to become stronger and stand up better. Sorry for the long message. Hope this helps. Does the soil seem soggy? If it seems muddy and thick, than I would recommend repotting it and inspecting the rhizomes. I use a really well draining potting mix like burpee organics and add perlite to it, as needed (depending on your type of climate and where it's going to be growing).. as far as watering, I caution more on the drier side.. I know it's time to water when my soil is dry and the pot feels light enough. If you feel the weight of the pot when it's wet.. and then feel it a few days after that, you'll be able to get the hang of when to water. When the soil feels dry on the bottom by the drainage hole and the pot feels light like nothings really in it, you know it's usually a good sign it needs water. They do like to be soaked all the way through when watered and they like their roots to dry out before watering again. They just don't like their roots to stay dry inbetween the waterings too long, if that makes sense lol. Let me know of you need anything😉 I'm always here to help when I can.
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 года назад
I usually repot all my plants as soon as they settle in from the store.. If the soil seems like pretty good soil, you can wait to see what happens and it might bounce back. That being said, if somethings going on with the soil, roots etc.. and you feel comfortable repotting it, I don't believe it could hurt. The only way to know for sure is to repot it.. (all the leaves might fall off but it's normal for that to happen, new leaves and flowers should start to emerge about a week or two after repotting).. they always amaze me after I repot them lol. If you see roots sticking out of the bottom of the pot, you know it could probably use an upgrade and refreshing of the soil. When I don't like the looks of things, I usually like to inspect the plant carefully and look for the reason it's struggling. That choice is totally up to you and what your comfortable with doing😉

I am a new subscriber to your channel. I bought a Shamrock green plant a week ago for my apartment. This morning I noticed that soil was completely dry and all the leaves became very droopy with brown stems. I got very worried and put in a bigger ceramic pot (was in smaller plastic pot) with more soil for to sit on. I added Miracle Grow potting mix and added some Mirach Gro Shake n Feed to the soil. I made the soil very moist. Tonight the plant is still very droopy and looks dead. I am in Canada and have put the Shamrock on my South facing window sill. With evening partial sunlight. It is end of March now. I am worried about this plant and will really appreciate if you can tell me what I did wrong and how I can save my Shamrock plant. Thank you so much .
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 года назад
It might be a little shocked from repotting, but it's hard to say.. Sometimes when I repot my shamrocks all the leaves tend to perish but once it settles back in, they'll usually start to grow pretty quickly again. I like to keep my soil more on the drier side than moist just because they are bulbs/rhizomes and can rot out easily sitting in wet muddy soil for too long. I just water enough to moisten the soil all the way through to the bottom of the pot. Wait for it to dry out, than I go ahead and water again once the soil is almost completely dry to the bottom. I keep my shamrocks in a few hrs of direct morning sun, dappled through the blinds and it seems to do pretty well for me. You don't want full sun for them, you just want some dappled rays through the shades 😎 let me know if you need anything else. I love to help whenever I can😊

They're super hardy plants. Mine get droopy when thirsy. Instead of transplanting I would have suggested watering.a bit more Mine tend to perk up in a few hours when I give them enough water. My oldest one is 20+ years old and is in a fancy pot with no holes and is completely root bound and super happy and bushy, flowers a couple times a year. Is not watered often. My other is in a clay pot with holes and is also quite happy but gets watered more frequently. If I forget to water it goes droppy and I water immediately and it perks up within hours, even at night.

please help me! 🙏 a few days ago I got a small shamrock (the green one) one week later I transplanted it to a bigger pot and I used miracle gro potting mix but the next day some of the leaves turned yellow and it looks like my plant is sad and dying 😭😭😭 I feel so bad. I always wanted a plant like this one and Now that I have it I don't want to lose it! should I mix succulent soil? can I move it back to the other pot?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain Год назад
First thing I do is try not panic 😉 Shamrocks are very resilliant.. It sounds like the leaves just got shocked because of repotting, which happens quite often when I repot my shamrock plants. I'd leave it alone, as long as it's in a good draining but rich kind of mix, I like to add earthworm castings to my soil, which ever I choose to use. Regular potting mix or succulent type soil is good. I just add extra drainage if necessary. If it was me, I would wait about a week.. see what happens since you just repotted it.. water when the soil is almost completely dry but don't let it stay too dry or the leaves can wilt and brown. New leaves should start popping up in about 5 to 7 days after planting. My shamrocks thrive on a bright windowsill or in early morning sun.. and stay in bright light for the rest of the day. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anymore help. Keep us posted😊

Yes that would be my suggestion as well😊 replant them seperately or leave them to fill out the pot. I just make sure the little Rhizomes are covered lightly with soil. They can get a bit dried out at the top of the pot, if they're left sticking out of the soil for too much or too long.

How can I tell when soil is dry all the way to the bottom? I usually water mine once a week. Is that too much?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 года назад
If your unfamiliar with watering habits you can try investing in a moisture meter😊 They really do come in handy and take the guessing out of when to water each plant. It all depends on some things like how much sun is it getting, is it growing indoors or outside, what type of soil is it in, how much drainage material is added to the soil, how big the plant is and the pot size its in compared to the root system, how much water that particular plant species likes etc.. its recommended to take all things into consideration when determining when to water your plants. A lot of people stick their finger into the soil about halfway down the edges of the pot. If it feels moist you know you can wait a little longer to water. Some people also use a wooden stick... if the soil comes out on the end of the stick and looks wet you know it's probably still moist. If there's no soil on the end of the stick than you know it's a good indication it needs water. Another way to tell which I usually do, is by lifting the pot. After you water, feel the weight of the pot, it's usually pretty heavy. After a few days, lift the pot again and feel how much lighter it is. If it feels the same or a bit lighter, you know the soil is starting to dry out. A day or 2 later... pick it up again and feel the weight of the pot, does it feel significantly lighter?... If so, I ask myself how light does it feel?.. Does it feel like there's no plant in the pot, yes/no. If it feels really light like there's no plant inside I know it's a good indicator I can water. This method usually works best for experienced growers so whatever method you feel comfortable with is ultimately up to you. Its always good to practice the "lifting your pot method" in my eyes 😊 Hope this helps! Best of luck!

@StaceyHerewegrowagain 2 года назад
In my experience it's not uncommon for the leaves to drop after repotting which is why a lot of growers recommend removing them beforehand. That being said I don't remove any leaves unless they break or flop over once repotted. They usually don't perk back up, if they haven't within 2 days or so.. best to remove them once they start dying so it puts energy into the new growth. Just some suggestions, you don't have to do anything your uncomfortable with.. sounds like it would be fine if you just left it alone too. That's ultimately up to you😊 Hope this helps

The more photosynthesis it gets the better when recouping. 😊 It usually happens to me after repotting because they're not so stable in the soil being its so fresh and usually on the fluffy side. It shouldn't do any harm whatsoever and I usually leave well enough alone if it's healthy and 😁The stems sometimes droop because of the transplant but should be A ok 👍 Just remove any that might fall off. You might get a few that die off as it settles in, but no need to worry. As long as new growth is starting to appear you know your good to go (usually happens within 1-3 weeks depending on the climate and conditions). Hope this helps😉

I want shamrocks as ground cover for my lawn instead of grass! Shamrock, not clover.

Me too! Lol We have so much of that clover around here. It takes over the entire lawn🙄

I too want my lawn to be shamrock. I have a few areas where it all ready is, but most of my yard is clover right now.

Worried on how u handle ur oxalis, ur making them stressed 😆 u can just simply pull away those rhizomes one by one and plant it again one by one on a new pot...

Oh God forbid go ask you questions. We will be here to listen to you for another 2 hours trying to explain. Do you ever stop talking? Otherwise, I really like your video. But you talking and talking and talking gets really annoying.

The talking is necessary to explain things. I don't know how you would explain something in detail without speaking.. also, none of my videos are 2 hours long lol

@@StaceyHerewegrowagain I don't mind so can you tell me, I never transferred a plant before...I put my Shamrock in a new pot with soil and it is just dropping over the sides. Before they stood up, they are all droopy now. Will it prop back up or did I kill the poor thing somehow. I tried to be careful 😢 It's perked up a BIT overnight! It still looks very bad but it is slightly better!
