OXALIS DORMANCY / how to give your shamrock a haircut /💇🏻‍♀️☘️

Today my oxalis needed to be put into a sort of dormancy and given a hair cut. I knew this would work because my purple oxalis did this to me once before and I actually cut it back much more than this one. I will continue to update you guys as this grows back in more tidy & fuller. This is the same plant as my avatar image, so you can see it went through a huuuuge grow phase, big bloom phase, and is basically needing a rest. Wouldn’t you? Haha xo ☘️☘️☘️

Removing leaves that are not yet dead actually keeps the plant from transferring the moisture & nutrients(still in those leaves) down to the bulbs & bulblets that are yet forming.... So.... Only remove the growth that has actually died. If the look of the plant at this stage bothers you, find a place for it where you won't see it so much. TY for the video!!!

I have had these purple clovers for 3 years and I pull the expired ones out and have had no problems at all! I have mine in a east window ,they get sun from sunrise till noon and then they are in shade till the next morning! Fact is what works for me might not work for everyone! Plants are like rising children and pets ,there is no such thing as a expert in growing plants, taking care of your pets and your kids! Advice is good tho!😋

I stop watering mine in early fall and roll the whole pot off to a dark cool closet for winter, then I pull it out in February and pour a pitcher of water in to the pot and wait. Blooms yearly by st Pat's day

It’s November and mine was starting to thin out and look weak. I got mine in March or April and was completely smashed and broken when my house caught on fire. I repotted the roots and it grew back fully within a few weeks. It grew great and really bushy this summer. When it began to look thin and weak, I cut mine back. That was a week ago. Today I noticed it grew back to about half its size already with more sprouting from the soil. I think all I did by cutting it back was piss it off. I’m beginning to be slightly afraid of this plant.

these are perennials , not house plants in England we grow them outside , they die right back in winter and come back in late spring.

Same here in zone 6b. I could put it outside and it does well in summer only. But they do very well as houseplants too :)

Sam Greenslyfox they do make great house plants, I have a couple. Im in the uk also and when I bought them they were in the indoor house plant section of the garden centre, so I didn't know at the time I could have them outdoors aswell lol :-)

Hi Sam, great video. I love the Oxalis plant 2. I have quite a few of them purple and green. I have them for two years. They are all around my apartment. I have even propagated it with the seeds they grow is pretty easy you should try it. Great job on your plant video. Thank you for sharing. 💓😇🌹🌿

@@dannavelasquez3611 yes these plants go through a period in the colder weather but come back beautifully in warm weather. I put mine out all summer and bring them in for winter as lm in Canada. I purchased six green ones recently and lve had a hard time with them if anyone knows if green clover come ld appreciate it.

When my Oxalis looks like that AND they’re old enough (1+ year), I cut off everything then dump the potting medium out to get all of the rhizomes. I then break each rhizome into several pieces (a rhizome would consist of a long series of scales. Snap them at the base of a scale. ). Then I pot them. It takes several weeks before they sprout.

.....same here...started with one three inch pot of these after a few years I now have many to give away...never direct sun if you can...and only hardy to about 15*F.....I store my dormant plants in the garage nov toll feb...then break up and re pot in fresh mix....

Chop off everything and leave in a protected area. The tubers can take the cold and rain. Every year, if they go dormant, they flower profusely.

I live in AZ and have a shamrock plant that is getting some brown spots on the leaves. Is it too hot here for it? We are in the high 90's-low 100's and I have it inside a screen in patio area.

That is probably too much heat on it. Try changing up the directness of the exposure of providing a sheer curtain or so. It doesn’t get that hot in Pennsylvania like desert heat, it’s a lot of humidity in the air. Like a thick air u can wear it feels gross lol but I guess that keeps the plant going bc it’s still moist in the air here in that heat. These plants do thrive the most in cooler temp times for me. Basically dec thru April

I live in 100+ degrees in the summer too. Above 85 degrees you will want to move your Oxalis to full shade. You will also need to water at least every other day with extreme heat. Alternatively, you can move it indoors as long as you have bright indirect light and you will not have to water as often. The Oxalis is happy in direct sun in spring, fall and winter.

Thank you for this video I found it very useful. So oxalis becomes dormant in winter months only? Mine starting to look tired already and it’s only October. Would you recommend giving it any growth food?

I rarely fertilize them. But a little (maybe twice a year I realistically supplement them) never hurts. Usually after a big season like spring and summer they need a gentle resting period. But they come back very quickly. Thank you for visiting 💛🍂

just added a new video featuring how these are doing these days. they've been moved to a few different containers since this video but all the rhizomes are healthy and they put new growth out any time i water them. xo

Just tried planting these outside for the first time this summer in a very shady spot. They do not get as leggy but seem to be doing well here in zone 5. AS far as the inside plant I water only from the bottom and keep them out of direct sunlight. Your plant looked like mine does when I haven't watered it enough and it had too much sun.

How long does the dormancy period last? And how will I know it is coming out of dormancy?

It really depends on the climate where you live. Mine never fully go dormant. I live in Central California where we only have a 3-5 freeze days per year. You can bring them in the house during the freeze to if you wish to avoid dormancy or just cover them at night. They are great as house plants as long as you have bright indirect light in you house.

The cutting advise is incorrect. Always pluck never cut. If you cut then the rest of the stem that is attached to the bulb/tuber must die off before new growth will be promoted. If you pluck then you will start seeing new growth within 3 weeks. Yes you should pluck the stem when the flowers are done blooming.
