Sound like you need some practice at casting. Here's what you do. Set up a few 5 gallon buckets in your yard at various distances from where you will cast. Cast your lure into the bucket, or, practice until you can. That's how I learned.
On your first cast let it sit if it's calm water and wait for the rings to dissipate a bit. Then give it a few walk the dog twitches and wait again for less time. Then crank it in. If no luck then don't wait on the next cast and retrieve with speed.
I like to cover a lot of water in a short amount of time and I find the fish hit harder when I go fast, this is just how I like to fish and it works extremely well 👌🏽
