I am so happy to see you put a pad under your knees when hand-torquing those studs. Believe me, in 20-30 years, your knees will thank you! I'm closing in on 50 and WISH I would have done that in my younger years.

I love when mechanics use Torque sticks to properly tighten the lug nuts on my car. The only problem is that most mechanics don't do what you do Faye. They keep the air gun on for too long and it ends up tightening them too much. I like how you do it. You just click your gun till you hear the lug nuts bottom out. You don't keep going over and over again. Great video.

Great video, Faye. I've never used torque sticks, because I wasn't sure of their accuracy. Your video actually proves that they're pretty accurate and also demonstrates the fact that torque sticks don't eliminate the need to do a final check with a good torque wrench. Keep up the great work.

As someone who has worked in tires for over a decade, you used a torque stick exactly like I was trained. I know there are a lot of guys who don't like them, but if used like you did here, it adds an additional layer of protection for the customer. It's a hell of a lot easier than feathering them on by throttling the trigger.

until you get nerve damage i used them shop rules after a month or two of daily use i stopped feeling my fingers a dr can give you a note but really you can blip them on i know some don't know how far to go and some go to far typically green horns

@Truth Defender Yes. It's essentially a guarantee (if done correctly) that you won't over tighten the lugs. Some people refer to it as a "pre-torque" I don't know about you, but I feel better knowing the customers wheel is secured correctly. Ever seen a tire fall off while the car is driving? Scary stuff! Not to mention that they come back pissed!
@TheTehman
@TheTehman 4 года назад
Truth Defender it can be caused by a number of things, including improper torque. Excessive corrosion on the wheel/hub matting surface, lugnut fatigue from over torquing. Application of antiseize or other thread lubricant. Improper lug seat type. Improper thread engagement. I’m sure there’s more.

Torquing wheels properly is very overlooked. Either the rotors pulsate if too tight, or the wheel comes off. Most people throw away the instructions that come with it; saying that you need to calibrate the gun to the torque stick based on gun setting, gun strength, air line diameter, air pressure, and yes, even the cleanliness of the lugs( rust buildup). You did it right by verifying the torque value with a torque wrench. But don't forget to clean the mating surface of the hub and wheel. If not, then when you hit a bump, the wheel re-centers itself, and the lugs loosen up causing need for a second torque. But I will say, you have more common sense than half people I have worked with.

I wish I could like this another 100 times! I have had more people question my methods on a tire rotation than any other process. I have actually written up some employees for not properly torquing a wheel. Those that say things like"Never had one fall off", are the one's that eventually find the door, cause if you can't learn the right way to torque a wheel, what else are you effing up?

I've been doing a little testing myself using a torque multiplier ,problems occur when antisize or any lube is on the studds,so they switch to a lower "pre torque "and then "ANGLE "..so in my experiment, the torque was 475ftlbs, but if there was contamination from a leaking hubcap, you might pre torque to 100ftlbs and finish with 135 degrees. (this was my result..not official), basically snug and then 4:30 on a clock.

That's a really great information video on torque sticks when i started many moons ago i was taught to just use the impact gun and go over it twice. I never trusted that and checked behind it. From what i found over the years is the variance in Impact Guns and air pressure will affect them
@cameronduff884
@cameronduff884 2 года назад
I found this out also on 1 inch guns, the smaller ones want to keep creeping, the air pressure can control the bigger guns, finally I broke down and set up a torque multiplier, now,using a MICRO ADJUSTING REGULATOR, the torque can set exactly with air pressure and you can have the guns certified if you need to (bench tested).

Yeah, think of your family members out there trying to break loose lug nuts that are over tightened in the rain on a dark road some night. Fuck, just do them lugs right save someone a real nightmare. Over tightening also can crack the stud and cause the wheel to fly off in a hard turn, say like swerving to miss a deer under heavy breaking. 8-(

Great video Faye, so many people- including those who call themselves mechanics- miss the whole point of leaving that bit so when you use the torque wrench you know it’s just right. I watched the monkey at my local tyre place the other day gun my wheels up full whack, then get the torque wrench. When it clicked without moving the nut he looked surprised so cranked it another quarter turn just to be sure. The manager wondered why I wasn’t happy!

This seem like a good system :) In my testing--which only involves one impact gun used with the same 150 lb*ft torque stick, on the same lug nuts of the single truck I own...I have concluded that a full two seconds of hammering gets me closer. I admit that your way is certainly less likely to overdue it, but for now I'm sticking with 2 seconds. BTW, if you go to the torque test channel you'll see that impact wrenches (without a torque limiting stick) don't tighten bolts to their max for about 15 seconds...everything less than 15 seconds is less than the maximum torque.
@RollsCnardly
@RollsCnardly 2 года назад
Give me a link to this Video on the torque test channel that says 15 (fifteen seconds). You must mean 1.5 seconds. 15 seconds is an awful lot of uga dugas ! ALL the lug tuds would be waaay stretched out by then, I guarantee it - unless you are using an junk impact or one with a Dead Battery . . .

My old shop used to use them incessantly. I switched to a Milwaukee Electric Impact, and it's different power settings allowed me to forgo picking up a stick set to go along with a pnumatic impact gun. You can pick a max torque value which the gun will not exceed (60/100/800ft/lb). Still do the last bit by hand though, that's key.
@ericb5273
@ericb5273 4 года назад
Went to a tire shop. On the rack the professionals used the impact to get them taught. Then they got it on the ground and used a torque wrench. They would get it to click, then after the click the guy went another half turn. I tried to tell him that's not how you do it. He rolled his eyes at me, then proceeded to do them the same way on all the other wheels. When I got home, I had to get my impact out, loosen them up, then torque them down properly. I know it's just installing lug nuts but if how someone does the simple tasks will determine how careful they are when the tasks get more difficult. Well done!! For what it's worth, I have an electric torque wrench for doing my own rotations. I use a conventional socket and release the trigger about a 1/2 second before I am taught. It spins its way to a stop. From there, I usually have one rotation before I click with the torque wrench. With that, I have little use for the torque stick. I but if I used that high torque pneumatic unit like yours, I'd probably use the sticks

What are your thoughts on using a cordless impact instead of air on torque-stick accuracy? I've used air before just found that cordless tools are really getting to be more efficient in a flat rate position.
@JohnSmith-ys4nl
@JohnSmith-ys4nl Год назад
There's youtube videos about this. The air guns are more accurate with the sticks because they generally have lower impacts per minute (IPM). Those electric guns from Milwaukee (etc) have too many IPM and affect the accuracy of the sticks. Of course, it's possible there are newer sticks out there designed for these higher IPM electric guns.

You can send it all the way with the torque stick and it will never over torque a lug nut. The extended body of the stick is precisely made to lose torsional load at the rated torque. The more torque you apply the more twist the stick will have, preventing over tightening. And yes, it is imperative to use a torque meter to complete the job. Torque sticks are just a tool to speed up labor.

Cute chicken. My neighbors chickens like to hang out at my house but I don't mind. They eat the bugs and are funny.

I am a hobbyist, so don't know what is right, but that looks fine by me. Honestly, I use a low power electric impact and then manually torque it up; my Dewalt top ends at 60lb/ft, so I just drive it on with that first. 🤷‍♂️

I do the exact same thing so it's nice to see a real mechanic confirm it.

Looks about right. DIYers might not be able to afford every tool so you can just give the lugs a good set by hand and then finish off once the tire is back on the ground.

I was never convinced about 'Torque Sticks' before due to different impact wrenches ext.... but that settles it. Just a handy pretensioner, right.... Awesome Thank you Faye. 😎👍
