I have a disabled daughter, she has high muscle tone and requires a higher calorie/carbohydrates/nutrition. I dehydrate to add ALOT, and add small amounts to her meals, small amounts(1/2 to 1 teaspoon) to a meal of a variety of things, will not change the taste of her food, but it does increase the content of her food, as well as her meals are pureed, so in some cases it thickens her food to the right consistence for her to eat, I also do the vitamins like Heidi, as well as in dehydrating fruits, adding small amounts to water, give me a flavored water, so on the days I'm really don't want water, flavor water helps with what I need for a daily intake, THANK YOU HEIDI FOR SHARING YOUR VIDEOS AND TIME

Perfect Scripture verse at the end to accompany this video. Thank you for taking time to search God’s Word for that finishing touch to whatever you’re teaching us. Finally, although this video is a sidebar to your other preservation instruction, it serves a greater purpose for me in that it saves experimentation time and money when developing recipes. I use my dehydrated greens in “dump” casseroles. . A jar of meat, a jar of vegetables, a can of cream soup and at least a 1/2 cup of dehydrated greens. Throw it in the oven for 1/2 hour and you’ve got dinner. Easy after a long day at work.

That greens powder is the bomb! I add a tbsp to every meal just right on top of my plate. I put it in all my dressings, gravies, dishes. When I am asking, I just tell the picky ones it's just seasoning and my foodie/health concious ones I tell the truth and make them promise to keep my secret lol. We still have kale coming in, even though we're in the mid south, so I am still dehydrating it. Thanks so much Heidi, I am healthier and more energetic since finding your channel and implementing many of your ideas! You are a true blessing!

I powder my freezer dried fruits too. My husband has CKD and can’t have the store bought dehydrated fruits...but he used to love the fruit flavored oat meal packets for breakfast. He had to give those up. So now, I make up my own oatmeal mix. There are tons of recipes on the web and all I do is add in powdered freezes dried blueberries...his favorite. When we evacuate for hurricanes, I often take a lot of dehydrated or freeze dried foods with us so that we don’t need to eat out as much. We usually go to the grocery store while there and try to get a place to stay that at least has a kitchenette. I can make tomato sauce, honey, so many things....just by adding water or broth. I don’t take jars though. I have a hurricane batch of foods that are ready to go into a backpack. I think that the only thing that I wasn’t thrilled with was corn....but I think that I didn’t rehydrate it long enough. We were in a hurry and were trying to hurry the process.

not much of a soup person - guess I might have to get used to it though if things get tougher. My favorite dehydrated or freeze dried veggie is spaghetti squash. I can take a portion out, reseal jar and add what ever I want for supper (or lunch, or breakfast) I can use chicken broth to resoften if I am going to fry for breakfast, add some dried bacon bits, put in hot iron pan and then add an egg and walla a nice meal. For supper, I use some of my spaghetti sauce or any kind of sauce I have made and add to the spagetti squash and add whatever else you want - mushrooms, cheese, even dried shredded carrots, etc. So easy - takes less than 5 mins and you can sit down to a meal that is not only tasty, but fast and needs little - just heated up usually for any kind of a pasta (except spaghetti squash) dish that one likes. I just dehydrated hash browns with just potatoes - so if I want to have for breakfast - real easy and for casseroles add whatever one likes and walla a simple dish and ready pretty quickly.

I’ve been dehydrating a few yrs. As I write there is my harvest of carrots that I pulled yesterday and their tops. Which I like to add as nutrition in soups and stuff and even smoothies. I like to dehydrate tomatoes for all kinds of stuff and some I leave as tomatoes some I grind for tomato powder which is awesome for tacos and sauces even meatloaf. I also make my own garlic powder so much better than store bought. I recently followed your video for orange and lemon powder and oh my I love it! I’m going to attempt the hamburger as you advised. I’ve been hesitant but what a great way to preserve hamburger and free up much needed freezer space. I finally have my lid sealers being shipped after two mos of waiting so I’m also excited about that! Wish i could afford my own freeze dryer but maybe some day! Thank you for all your wonderful ideas and instructions! Watermelon btw is delicious dehydrated! 🍓🌽🥕🍊

Do you have a video on dehydrating hamburger. I’m very interested in this method. I’ve been dehydrating fruit and veggies for about 40 years. Never tried meat. Didn’t think it could be done safely. I looked in your playlist for a how to video on this and couldn’t find one. Please consider making one on hamburger would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of meat in my freezer I worry I’ll loose if power ever goes out which in California lately has been an issue of them turning off power randomly. Fire season is just around the corner and I’d like to take care of this. Love your videos.

Great vid Heidi. Love all the ways you use the racks. Those racks would be great to put on top of an electric stove while baking various things as well. As you know, I'm not off grid & don't have a woodstove. Not by choice though. But on bread baking day and crackers and such would be a great time to be dehydrating on top of it too. Just put some "feet" on those 2 sides to raise it off the "eyes". As you know gf baking can be time intensive so that way the heat would be being used twice. I occasionally do a baking day of my stuff & freeze or vacuum seal them in jars to keep them good till I use them up. I've actually stopped eating a lot of things I like because the costs are too much, including wasted electricity. This, however, would make that more efficient.
@ms.anonymousinformer242
@ms.anonymousinformer242 3 года назад
Thanks for this tip. So do all heat related electrical things together in the same day will save on energy costs 🤔 ?
@edieboudreau9637
@edieboudreau9637 3 года назад
@@ms.anonymousinformer242 by using the electricity all at once there's no preheating time costing money for each item. Having 1 ready to go in right behind the other saves that time & if dehydrating on top of stove it will use the "lost" heat at no additional charge. So yes in that particular case. If your rate is based on high demand times do it on low demand times to save there too. Note: not all electric rates are the same all day/month long. Some charge double or more during high demand times like on 90*f days during hours of noon to 9 pm. If that is the case where you are... Do most baking after 9pm To save on costs.

I am going to try dehydrating the tomatoes. I always hate using tomato paste, because most recipes use only a tablespoon or two, and then I have the rest of the can left, which I have to freeze, even with the small cans. Now I'm thinking I could dehydrate the rest of the paste as well? I am also going to try the ground beef. We bought a whole cow last year, and still have a ton of ground meat left, but I need my freezer space for my garden produce.

I dry them whole but when I go to put them in the jar, I break them up into little pieces. Not only do I use such herbs flaked anyway, I can fit more in the jar. I do not think they would dehydrate up as well as a topping because how thin they are but mine always go in my sauces

Wow, so much great information in this video. I am going to fire up my dehydrator this week. I don't know why I find it scary. I son'r have any of those mats and would like to do some fruit leather, is there something else I can use? I see pickled eggs sitting back there...........are you going to do a video on those? Hopefully yes!!!!!
@marthaadams8326
@marthaadams8326 4 года назад
Yes, get some parchment paper at the grocery store - the silicone mats you can wash, the parchment you throw away and repurchase. So after a while, you will buy the silicone on Amazon or from the dehydrator company. Nothing scary about a dehydrator. My only rule is, I either put it on lowest heat for over night - or turn it off. You can over dehydrate (just like overcooking). I have no timer on mine - so I keep an eye on it by setting an alarm to go and check it. It will not burn or explode or any of those things, just over dehydrates. I would not dehydrate pickled eggs - doesn't sound right. Anyone else? To get started, I would just buy a bag of frozen veggies at the grocery and dehydrate them. When you see how easy it is and the space you save in the freezer - you will dehydrate as much as you can out of there.

@RainCountryHomestead

Not sure if that was meant to be a question but when adding to soups, there is no need to rehydrate first, nor to grind them, just toss them in. That is what I do with all dried veggies I am adding to soup. They will rehydrate while they are cooking.

I watched this video in several sessions, so perhaps I missed it, but it looks to me like you did not mention steaming, which is a natural complement to drying. A traditional 3-decker stovetop steamer can prepare an entire meal--for example, fish or meat dumplings in the bottom, veggies & potatoes in the second layer and steamed dessert in the top. Steaming is healthy in two ways: it reduces the amount of fat used, and it cooks at a lower temperature. High heat produces heterocyclic amines (HCA's) which are carcinogenic.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 года назад
I did not mention it because this is how I use dried foods, not anyone else. However, good to know, still won't be my choice though

I think they mean if you open a #10 can of meat, you need to use it up. I have resealed a lot of meat that I purchased commercially in canning jars and sealed and they are still good.

I wondering if you contacted the local extension office about dehydrated meat in a jar, they told me not to put dehydrated meat ever! Because the dehydrator leaves part of the meat moist thus can cause botulism. Dehydrating meat dose not kill bacteria and parasites plus you not sealing it correctly.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 года назад
Yet, people eat dried meat in the form of jerky that is only sealed in plastic bags all the time. And many people dehydrate COOKED ground beef (which is what mine is) all the time and they use it. That is not a new practice.
