PLEASE NOTE: I think many missed the point of the above video and that it was about my favorite things to dehydrate to give people ideas of what they can put up in that form but NOT an instructional video on how to dehydrate and use all the items because not only do I already have in depth videos out on many of those items, the above video would have been at least two hours long for me to go over all of that. This is why I provided the link to the full dehydrating playlist in the description box but I will go ahead and put it again here so you can find the videos I have out on most of the items I mentioned in the above video and learn how I dehydrate them and how I use them: ru-vid.com/group/PLzVtTPDzFPKGq40kbOG_h6yo9K6NDQ9_S

Heidi, I always feel optimistic and happier after watching your videos. This video is great! My grandmother (born around 1880!) down in California dried everything on metal screens out in her field, bringing it all into the shed before the dew fell on it each night. She always had a cow and chickens, garden, small orchard, all that. They were the rare family that had butter through WW2.

I recently needed some cabbage slaw for some BBQ pork that I unearthed from our big freezer. I didn’t have a fresh cabbage so I went for a cup of dehydrated. Soaked it in ice water in the fridge for about an hour or so… came back crispy and crunchy! Wonderful! I added in a bit of mayo and vinegar plus seasoning… winner. Wasn’t as good as fresh but darn close.

A couple of years ago I was looking around for a dehydrator and found a mesh made hanging one on Amazon. The one I got has 6 enclosed shelves with zipper openings. At that time it cost around $35. I can load it with 6 different herbs, etc and in a few days just take them out for putting into jars. No setting of heat or electricity needed. Super easy. Just remember to label what you're putting in it since after they're dried it can be difficult to tell the difference.

Onions and garlic are among my favorite things to dehydrate! I caramelize the onions in the slow cooker in a little bit of water. I save that broth to make soup, then I put the onions in the dehydrator. Some of that I store as slices, and some of it I use to make caramelized onion powder. Sooo good. I also make garlic powder with some of my dehydrated garlic. Also dehydrated peppers and zucchini get used in my soups.

All of the above! Although I haven't gotten to your method of dehydrating meat, yet, because I'm busy with other things. One of my favorite things to dehydrate is cantaloupe. It's SO good. Really sweet. I never re-hydrate it, so not sure how it does with that, but as a nice snack it's super. I often take it in the truck with me. I don't buy food out anymore. Since finding your channel about a month ago I have turned into a dehydrating maniac, dehydrating anything and everything from milk to hot peppers. lol. I live in a small condo, so I can't have my own chickens, but my local grocery store had organic eggs for .99 about a week ago because the "sell by" date was coming up. I bought all 11 dozen they had! I dehydrated all but 1 dozen ( I boiled the last dozen) and fit them all in 1 and a half quarts. Now I check my store every few days to see if they have them again. I've dehydrated 3 gallons of organic whole milk and the other day I got a bunch of organic half and half on sale and tried my hand at that and it turned out great! I am going to try heavy cream next! I am so thankful for you and your wisdom! God blessed me when he brought me to your channel!!!

My husband and I are on a two-week driving trip with our dog. Since we supplement her kibble with eggs, pumpkin and ground beef every day we weren’t sure how to bring all these along without refrigeration. The eggs weren’t a problem- I brought a dozen unwashed eggs from our chickens. A large can of pumpkin didn’t take up too much space but the ground beef was going to be tricky. Then I remembered the several jars of dehydrated ground beef I had made with your help - problem solved! After watching this video I guess for the next trip I can powder the eggs and pumpkin and that will be even more convenient. Thanks for the ideas about what more I can dehydrate😊

Thanks to your channel I've started dehydrating more & more things. I like it because it takes me less time to get them going than it takes to can or blanch & freeze, which is important in the midst of harvest, AND it doesn't take nearly as much watching over. I really enjoyed this content today. I dehydrated some sweet potatoes this weekend (10 good-sized potatoes became 16 oz of dehydrated bits). I contemplated canning them but didn't want to expend the time nor could I afford the space on the shelves for jars that we just wouldn't look forward to eating. We don't eat sweet potatoes except for one dish at the holidays. (The sweet potatoes were a gift and I didn't want to see them go unused or wasted). I feel I will use sweet potato powder much more effectively! Thanks for helping us all understand our food storage options better!

I love my Z powder! thank you for doing this as an experiment as it works nice in my pancake, waffles, breads. Excellent video. Thank you Heidi. I have some dehydrated kidney, black and pinto beans from 2022 and 2021. I keep wondering if they are still good and I am about to open one jar and try them. 😊They were all vacuum sealed when I dehydrated them. I am afraid I don’t know how long I can keep all my dehydrated food. I do rotate but I do have a lot. I had a very nice Pro Cabela’s Dehydrator and when we moved five years ago I gave it away thinking I would not be dehydrating anymore. What was I thinking…….NOT. So I have bought myself a cheap one now as I decided I wasn’t through with dehydrating food even though we no longer have a huge garden. Big Big mistake on my part giving that dehydrator away with all my mason jars, meat slicer, vacuum sealer, and much more. It was a very stressful move after living in the same home for 52 years. And moving from a home of 7000 sq ft to a small townhouse. Can’t think about that now….it is done.

Contrary to companies that push their freeze dryers and try to make people believe that dehydrated goods do not last long, they can last indefinitely and only a year or two is nothing compared to that so yes, they should still be good as long as they stayed dry (meaning did not get any moisture in them in storage)

How do you use dehydrated spinach in your soups etc, I place some whole spinach in my soup and I couldn't eat it because it was so tough. Thank you so much for your information.

Did you have to cook the squash first before dehydrating

Thank you for sharing all this. FYI just found out that solar gives off high EMF:/

Not surprising as most things put off EMFs including fluorescent light bulbs. Good thing our panels are outside on the roof. One should be more worried about their cell phones and keeping them constantly on their person or close to them all day.
