Sam, you are so spot on with using a cane. I have had star guards since the age of 8. I was very vain in my younger years and did not want anybody to know that I was legally blind. Once I embraced using the cane to identify myself as not being able to see you, I may run into you, it changed my world! As you call your cane, moses, take it to Disneyland, no joke, you will part the seas. For those that are partially sighted, it is very hard to keep the smile off your face when moms are grabbing their 2-year-old out of your way as if you are going to crush them, LOL thanks sam!

Lol thanks John, this comment totally made me smile! I completely agree with you on everything, especially being too proud and stubborn when younger. Also, what you said about the moms is grabbing kids, it’s so true, lol!

I just received mine from NFB. Very light fiberglass , perfect for my height. I don't walk much, but went outside recently and it was very frightening to walk in yard. Couldn't see the ground....all green blur. Bushes blended. Now I think I feel safer and less likely to trip. A few steps more each time...getting stronger. My goal is to walk out in yard this spring ....by myself!

I used to have the standard white and red cane, and people didn’t seem to know what it was for. I got asked very frequently what it was or why I had it, because, you know, I don’t look blind. Now I have a hot pink one that I like a lot better because it’s more fashionable and I live by the motto look good feel good. And I haven’t really noticed a difference of how people interact with me with either cane.
@theblindlife

That’s great! The more I think about it, the more I think maybe I would get a different color cane. Maybe take it out on those days that I just want to stand out and look cool!
@CaylawithaC
@CaylawithaC 6 лет назад
The Blind Life I say go for it! I also think that the colored canes are beneficial to people who are reluctant about using a cane. They may be more likely to use a cane if it’s their favorite color. And that’s the important part, whatever will make them feel more comfortable using it

I am visually impaired from glaucoma and my other eye conditions and I use a ambutech white cane around my college and surroundings. It is one of the best a long white canes I've ever had and I heard it's a really good quality. I've been using folding canes for a long time. I like it way better than the nfb long white cane.

Hello! I just got the no jab cane I saw in one of your videos today! My friend at work ordered it for me. My co workers (2nd family ) couldn't have been more supportive-. I can't believe I finally got a cane- I have denied needing one for far too long. I finally understand this cane is for my safety as well as others. I tried not to look like a person who has a vision problem, that is not fair to myself. Quite honestly its exhausting! I have very low vision in my remaing eye. I might have saved myself alot of pain and grief- and embarrassing moments -had I done this a long time ago. It is not fair to the people who don't know, they have no way of knowing that I can't see no more than a undefined human shape. I can silently tell them now. I owe a debt of gratitude to the you tubers who put themselves out there, and the knowledge of the people who comment. I probably wouldn't have gotten my cane had I not found these videos. Thank you 😁

Thank you! I know I need professional training wit it. It is not as easy as it looks. I get to my job an hour early, I take a bus and the 530a is far less crowded. I am getting the feel of my cane, taking some time to learn what concrete, asphalt, rocks and grass feel like. I am trying to hold and swing the cane properly and gather all this info at the same time. Its definitely something one should learn from a o and m person. No jab was the right decision, sidewalks are not completely flat and the tip catches that.

Hi all! O&M instructor here. I can't emphasize enough that you get properly fitted and trained and on cane use. I have seen far too many people that buy canes on their own before training and end up with one that is too short. There is so much more to O&M training than just moving a cane. We teach individuals orientation knowing where you are in your environment. We also teach street crossings, GPS, using transit, self-advocacy and campus orientation. Every state has a department with certified instructors that teach O&M. If services are not available in your area, your state rehabilitation agency can guide you on where to obtain training.

Thanks for this video. I was beginning to think I was the only “VIP” who still had navigation vision. I have similar vision issues to you. great video. I have the white cane. it sure helps. In most cases I don't use it like 90% of the time. I only use it in public or at places I never been before. its great. because I would notice folks would move on the other side when they see me. giving me a clear path to move on. lol. doing so gives me plenty of time to get things done in a much smoother way.

I agree with Cayla with a C. I had a white and red cane, and it was not recognized by others. I just ordered myself an all-white cane for identification only, and I got a navigation cane that has pink instead of red with a cork handle rather than the golf club one. I like the pink as it tends to be more of my style, and the handle is strictly preference. I am not a fan of the bulky golf club ones.

Thank you for this video. I'm considering using a cane for identification purposes. I have enough useful vision that I probably don't need it for "navigation" but it would make my life easier if I had some way for others to be able to readily be aware of my situation.

Really good information! I have been visually impaired for almost 9 years but never had a cane because of my living situation and no one will take me downtown to get the training. I finally got one on eBay and not sure exactly how to use it LOL I'm going to travel soon and thought it might help people see me but I don't have the smaller cane that you showed which might be better for me since I do have some sight. I learned a lot from this video thank you!

Hi there Sam we have the same name I'm coming up on one year of using a white cane no formal training at least on Cane travel I've had General Mobility training not focused on Cane travel. I started off with just an ID cane I do use it the same way as you do fried edification and those steps and curbes however I have switched to just a regular full navigation cane for the reason is I didn't want to have to be stopping at every seam in the sidewalk or every time I text her changes just to probe and investigate I want to be able to do that seamlessly as I navigate and I feel that the regular full Mobility cane allows me to do that. One other thing I like to is the heavier durability which of course and IDK mean does not provide because they are a lot more flimsy. I have an issue that I seem to realize that I have is with depth perception.

I use a navigation cane because even though I can see most things in front of me, I have almost zero depth perception, so if there is a small dip in the road, or a curb I fall, I also have some blind spots starting and processing problems from a brain tumor. So like if there is alot going on I can't always recognize where something is or how close I am too it if that makes sense 😅

My cane is purple where the red part usually is... Because CA law says it only has to be "mostly" white. My handle and marshmallow tip are pink like Casey's. No one makes a fuss about the color. I used to help teach a summer class for young VI kids, and one little boy wanted a Spiderman cane, so Drew webbing patterns and stuck stickers all over it, then sprayed each section with some heavy duty resin, and he LOVED IT!!! I see it this way, if a person can customize their wheelchair, and it works for them, why shouldn't I be able to customize my cane?

As far as I know, there is no actual standard on canes. White is definitely the most common and best recognized signal for a visual impairment, though there are some countries where yellow is the standard. This also holds true for the red parts. Some area's seem to have some meanings tied to the amount and placement of red parts... but again, no international standards. Over here it's typical to see one or two small red bands on the cane, but there is no standard on what they actually mean. The most important thing when it comes down to aesthetics, is that you can be recognized as having a visual impairment. In that sense, having a cane be mostly white works best for most people. Also, traffics laws over here explicitly state that someone with a white cane, with one or more red rings, ALWAYS has right of way. Ignoring a blind person who signals with his/her cane he/she wants to cross can lead to a rather hefty fine, even if they are not crossing at an actual crossover. This also goes for all other occupants in traffics, such as bicycles... the true threat of this country, lol.

Awesome, love your cane choices. I did have one question, Ambutech or revolution. I personally prefer a revolution canes, but I’ve been having a problem lately. I outgrew mine, ordered the right size, and I’ve been waiting for over a month now. Do you know how long they take to come in? Also, I had a great sure idea. You should have two new shirts in the rotation of shirts. One that says proud to be blind, and another that says proud to use a cane. The phrases could be written in print and braille on the shirt.
@theblindlife

Thank you! I’m afraid I don’t know how long it takes to get the cane. Perhaps the delay is due to the virus. Those are great ideas for shirts, thank you. I actually do have a blind and proud design but still have not turned it into a T-shirt yet. Will do that soon.

I have a pink cane because I have CVI (cortical vision impairment) and bright colors are easier for me to see, but I primarily use my cane for navigation, not identification. But people have still recognised my cane for what it is. Also it's two red stripes to indicated deafblindness or both vision and hearing impaired. (I'm deafblind and have the stripes on my cane although I have no idea if anyone has noticed that yet.

Yes, it’s the same here in the states. You have to complete an extensive session of mobility training with the cane before you can get your guide dog. I apologize for the lack of international shipping on the T-shirts. I wasn’t aware of that when I started the process of selling through Amazon. I’m hoping they will offer that in the future or I’ll have to start looking at other options.

I have two telescopic canes that I recently bought off Amazon. One is Ambutech and built tougher than my first cane from ILA (Independent Living Aids). The ILA one does not have the red segment but the Ambutech one does. They are a little troublesome to collapse but are easy to deploy. I have been self teaching at home with the side to side/tap method as that is what I have heard is the "standard". Now that I know how you use your cane, that is the same reason I have mine, I feel better about using it. Knowing I do not have to have it out in front all the time. Also, why did you not show the telescopic canes in this video? I have also ordered 2 shirts. I can't wait for them to come in.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 6 лет назад
I actually recorded this video twice before and for one reason or another wasn’t able to use it. In one of the previous versions I talked about my telescopic cane but it didn’t make the cut in the final video. I actually broke my telescopic cane while I was collapsing at once. Either I close that with too much force or it got bent and snapped.
@muleman1701
@muleman1701 6 лет назад
Sam, I a sorry to hear that your telescopic cane got damaged. They can be a hassle to collapse but I just let it do what it does, I let it collapse how it wants to instead of forcing it. I know one day I might be in a hurry and accidentally force it but those things happen. On the upside, if you get the exact same cane you now have replacement tips for it.

@theblindlife
@theblindlife 6 лет назад
I’ve actually done a few presentations for elementary schools talking about vision impairment. I always take a cane and talk about how people use the cane differently for different levels of vision loss. We talk about how if someone has a guide dog, you’re not supposed to Pat the guy dog while they’re wearing their harness. Harness on equals the guy dog is working and shouldn’t be touched. Harness off equals that it’s safe to pet the dog and play with it as long as the owner gives permission. We also talk about how blind people are just like everyone else and how they shouldn’t think of them as scary or strange. Also if they want to ask them how they became blind that that’s totally OK. How most blind people are happy to talk about that. I love doing those presentations, the little kids are so cute and love to learn about it!

Could you possibly add a little piece about giving directions and acting as a sighted guide too? The children at one of our local schools do a class like this and have a great time. They all got to take home a card with their names in braille letters last time too - so proud of themselves.

Are used to have one but it broke. I really liked the idea of the telescopic cane but they all suffer from the same flaw. They collapsed way to easily while you’re walking. In fact once while I was closing it, it broke.

Ha. I have a black cane. It's so cool. I decided to change the color for safety reasons. When I live, divers are strange. And people don't have a lot of respect for the visually impaired. I wanted a cane that wasn't so noticeable to the people around me while still being functional. I haven't used my canes for a long time. But I know I really need to.

@BG-gz7gt
@BG-gz7gt 6 лет назад
I was told that it should come to just under your armpit but it might be an idea to talk to your local visual impairment people or the cane supplier for advice. Things like your walking speed and reaction times can make a difference.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 6 лет назад
Yes, that’s exactly right. Just under the armpit is a good gauge for the link. But as BG said, if you’re a fast walker you may want it a little longer or vice versa. Armpit or collarbone is a good starting point though.
@MM-yh2mi
@MM-yh2mi 5 лет назад
Depending on how fast you walk, you can get it as tall as you are. The longer the cane, the more information you receive before you hit it. Three steps is a good guide. If you put a cane out in front of you with the tip touching a wall and walk towards the wall at a typical pace, you should be able to take three steps before you hit the wall. If it’s too short, you could step off a curb, hit a wall or something because you don’t have enough time to react.

One struggle I’ve had with folding canes is the string was too tight when I receive them. Also, the string breaks & I don’t know how to fix it.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 6 лет назад
You’re right, that can be annoying. I recently threw a cane away at work because the string broke and there was no way for me to fix it. Very frustrating.
@schoen208
@schoen208 5 лет назад
I know on the identification style canes, or at least mine, there is only one string versus two strings on bigger folding canes. On this style cane you have to pull each segment way apart and then fold it, if you don’t the string will definitely be too tight. Not sure if that’s the issue on yours but it definitely is on mine. Sam, I am an RP guy and just today found your channel. Man very cool bud, love it! I am going to buy some of your shirts, though first I am going to try and figure out how to message you with a question.

I'm legally blind, (20/200 vision acuity,) and will be traveling to Europe, (specifically Croatia,) net summer with a college Christian ministry. I currently use a white folding cane with red. However, I was unaware that totally white meant additional hearing los, which I do have. In short, my question is this: what version of cane will I need to have with me, and are there any different laws/cane techniques I'll need to be somewhat comfortable with using? If anyone is watching from Southern Europe, any input would be of great value to me!
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 5 лет назад
That’s great Lucas! It seems that here in the states there isn’t any hard or fast rule about the color combination. Most people don’t realize that a red stripe or even multiple red stripes means anything different. I think that isn’t the case in Europe though, they seem to be more educated but I’m sure whatever you take will be fine. Maybe someone in the comments here can get more advice than that. Either way, have a great trip!
