I love 3-defender formations but those three have to be mobile and smart, imo. A lot of times, it's a struggle for me until I find (or develop) those players. Until then, I have to be content holding teams to 1-3 goals and using the offensive numbers to generate 3-5 as much as possible. I also like them to not commit to attacking an offensive player too often but instead be alert to picking off passes to them. If the ball is on the foot of a fast winger, AMC, or forward, we've failed as a defense already. And without that mobility - we'll not have a chance to recover. I get the rationale of why you want defenders to be good in the air but a 12 speed, 18 jumping player isn't going to do a thing against a burner that can pass on the ground to a partner that's as fast. Gotta cover ground and get in the pass lanes. It can work and certainly gets me a lot of "entertaining soccer" points with the supporters. Since I love versatile midfielders and 5 in the center-mid level to create a lot of confusion and opportunity, I'll take it. Win's a win. 5-4 or 3-0, it's 3 points all the same.

Could mean you're dominating matches in honesty therefore you naturally won't have as many, which I was so that's why I checked the winning possession one more thoroughly

Maybe use a 3-4-3 formation with a counter attacking style. In the front three could use the strikers like wingers and the attacking mid like a false 9 then in the mid four you could put two defensive wingers and one box to box and another dlp or bwm and in the back three a libero and two bpd might do it. You're an expert in my eyes you could tweak this into even something better

I've thought about doing that. 3 defenders, 4 in the central space, 3 forwards with one, likely the central forward, being a F9 or CF (they'll often play as a F9 or a secondary winger, especially if you do pass into space and the opposition doesn't defend sideline-to-sideline and you play the whole width of the field on offense). Kind of like dump-and-chase tactics in hockey. The CF can be the one to go get the ball or move across levels to be available and exploit the defense if they decide to chase the ball also.
