A few tweaks can work wonders when it comes to setting up your art space. In my latest video, I take you through my current art table setup and all the little things that help with creating an inspired workflow. You'll see how I have adjusted my workspace layout and organised my supplies for maximum accessibility. This setup has been working so well for me and has me happily arting away, creating paper pieces, and filling up my sketchbooks. I hope it provides inspiration for your own creative space.

I love your videos. This one was so helpful! I often felt bad for having my things all on the surface of a table. It is so nice to see that you work in this way. I also love seeing everything that I have, so I can get into, rather than putting things away and bringing them onto again. Thank you for this inspiration!!! I loved your Mixed Media course. :)

I've recently created a sketchbook that's just for my paint swatches. It has 100% cotton cold press watercolor paper in it. I also have another sketchbook that I swatch out pencils and markers and write notes in, that has lighter hot press paper in it. I don't mind using one of my good watercolor sketchbooks for swatches and mixes as I was doing these throughout my normal sketchbooks anyway and probably repeating things in different books. I'm finding it so much easier having everything in those two books instead of, like you said, searching through various finished sketchbooks trying to find painting notes, ideas and swatches. They also seem to have cleared my workspace of little scraps of paper with partial meaningless notes on them.

This is such a great idea, beginning to wonder why I didn't do that 🤔 Though, I do quite like being able to look at different sheets at once. I might end up swatching them all in one single sketchbook too. More swatching days ahead I reckon 🎨🤣

@@LauraHornArt Swatching is fun 😆 I've swatched by color not brand so all my greens are together, all my blues etc. Some colors feature twice through the book like transparent yellow oxide. I have it in with the yellows and also with the earth colors. Cascade green is a granulating color which shows as both green and blue so it's in with my greens and turquoises. My quinacridone burnt orange is in with the oranges and also the earth colors because I use it as my burnt sienna.

I decided a while ago that I wanted to "live in an art studio." I'm in a cabin far from town, but in a tiny hamlet with a population of about 16. I rarely get visitors, and painting is what I do most days, so my living space now has 2 chairs for sitting in one small corner, there is 1 wall of kitchen, and the rest is art studio! (I do have a separate bedroom.) I'm still trying to figure out the best layout as the room is a little awkward, and natural light only comes from one area, but I keep fine-tuning and visualuzing possibilities. So every video like this helps me think of ideas. This was helpful! Thanks, Laura!

I do art in a small spare bedroom, so I always like it to look tidy, but I found I was just too tired to drag everything out I might want to work with, so I just wasn't doing art. I can't keep it on my art table because of too much Arizona sun exposure, so my happy medium has been in neat-ish stacks on the floor next to the art table away from the sun. I do like the idea of a trolly though for more vertical storage. That could be an even better solution.😊

This is heavenly, Laura! I have trouble with ‘out of sight out of mind’, when I have packed things away, trying to be tidy. That just doesn’t work for me. I’ve just lost everything when my storage shed (and 130 others) burnt down 5 days after I moved house….. It will take time to build up my collection again, but a friend gave me a big blank (generic) book, and I’ve bought some graphite pencils, a sharpener and eraser, so I’m starting again, and will draw trees, after starting a monthly subscription with Mike Sibley, an extraordinary realistic graphite artist in England. This will also serve me when I get back into painting. Having a permanent table set up like this is heaven! I’m also a swatch person, and love adding to them when I buy new paints. I want to watch this video often.

Glad you enjoyed seeing the space and thank you for being in my class community. I recently tested out St. Petersburg White Knights Watercolours and was impressed with the vibrancy. They are much more transparent and like typical watercolour. Winsor & Newton Cotman and Royal Talens Van Gogh are also good student grade options.

I can vouch for the Winsor Newton Cotman student grade set. I really love the quality of the paint and portability of my pan set. I have noticed WN dries more matte than the Kuretake does, but both have beautiful vibrant colors. Kuretake is also a little more opaque and WN more transparent like traditional watercolor.

Easy access to supplies is so helpful. It was confirming for me to hear how you keep your swatch sheets because as a hobby artist who only does art here and there, I found having my swatch sheets put together and handy at my work table was key to really knowing the colors I want to work with. I also find it handy to just grab my swatch sheets when I go shopping for new supplies to determine what I really need and avoid duplicates. A quick glance reveals gaps in colors. I did put mine inside sheet protectors for the added strength and protection. I slip them in back to back and attach them to a bull clip. I can add swatches as my collection grows. I am also enjoying the vibrant opacity of the Kuretake Gansai Tambi water colors. Thanks for sharing your space with us. Always enjoy your videos.

You are welcome. All my trolleys are from IKEA, though you can get similar things from other homewares stores and places like Amazon. As far as neck pain, I don't really have a solution. I just try to limit my time in one position and often move around from my table to my floor, to an easel, and back again. If I spend too long at any one thing I do suffer with neck pain and headaches. It's hard to avoid, just have to keep moving!
