The impression I get is that you don't want to play pokemon, just minmax a simple battle system for quick games. In other words, rather than an RPG adventure, its a roguelike with some creatures as flavor. Why not commit to what you're creating, and just make it so? Maps and trainers and catching don't sound like what you're worried about, you should just make a Battle Factory Sim, pick a team, face an opponent, see the next team you're facing and swap your pokemon team with the defeated opponent's team accordingly to the next one. You'd need to design a room at most (if full battle factory), just a display screen of whats in store next if you don't want to make a room (see: balatro) and then you can focus all your time and brains on developing movesets, team synergies, monsters types and so on, to flesh out the part of the game you seem to be most interested on.

Adding on to the "personalities" idea, it would be cool if depending on the personality, the picopals would say different things. A yellow pico pal could say "ua UA!" but a red one could say "A A UUU!" Or you could pull an undertale and make the creatures talk, i don't know-

As for Game Maker: Every time you close a room view, the grid resets to the default. You can change the default in the game settings. I love the art style!

On the name input screen at 0:30, the column for G and Q is offset a few pixels to the right. And the last column for J and T is too far right.

Just curious how your colour-wheel system would work for people who are colour blind? Will you have options to change the colours to accommodate colour blindness?

@@ryan_nein there's a platformer game called Hue that allows the player to individually change each color in the palette to whatever they want. idk how difficult this is to program because i've never used it in my games, but since you have a nice limited it might be feasible. Alternatively, you could just have a letter or two next to the creature's name for what color it is (G for green, YG for yellow-green, etc.) and then have a color wheel the player can pull up that includes the letters. Also, this game looks really cool! I've always liked the idea of a creature collector game, but i've never really enjoyed pokemon. Good luck with the project!

@@cctoad You could also perhaps have each colour slightly change the physical appearance of the creature. I'm not exactly sure how you'd do it with such an abstract type system, but, for example, if there were a type system where yellow was electric, you could visually show that by making the creature look more electrified, or a water type could look more wet. I think in the video its mentioned that colours roughly correspond to personality types, so maybe there's a way to visually portray types using that.

bloom is fine but its a bit too harsh. a softer bloom will look better

I didn't even notice the bloom until I read this, so I'd say it's fine at this level. Could you add a slider in the in-game settings to adjust it up/ down for people to choose their preference?

I can't say for certain whether or not I like all of these ideas yet, but I've always wanted to see more pokemon-esque games (was really happy to see a game like pal world succeed), so I'll definitely check this out when its released. :-)
