I've started 3 days ago. Still researching the correct path to take to self educate. Found your page and 3 others and a couple of blogs to gain inspiration from.Doing a beginner course in Data Aynalitcs and studying how to code as of the last 3 days. Is it better to maybe work to become a Data analyst first and continue your studies to the point where you can take on the role of a Data Scientist? Or just go straight for the Data Science role?

I think learning the theory before learning to code can be a really tedious way of learning data science in general. There is so much to learn in statistics, linear algebra, ML etc even on their own and if you try to learn this before even getting to code yourself and implement things you run the risk of burning out before doing "anything". I tried and failed to get into data science properly a few years ago because I tried to go through the route of theory first, through Andrew Ng course etc. What really helped was just looking at the typical go-to projects that we've now all seen on Kaggle and working through those, learning the theory as and when you need it. Learning to code gradient descent from scratch is nice but if you just want to see the fruits of your labour and understand what the typical day-to-day of a data scientist is you need to get your hands dirty by looking at data ingestion, cleaning, EDA and then modelling. Bit of a ramble but hope I made some sense :)

Thanks so much for clearing it out. I am learning data science on my own. I started learning statistics few months ago, almost done. I was a little confused and restless if i made the right choice by learning statistics first. I read a lot of comments on quora where people said that coding should be the first step, it didn't make much sense to me. Now its all clear and i have gained confidence after watching your video. I have a similar road map to what you just said. Thanks so much for inspiring and giving us so much info. All the best and really looking forward to watch your future videos.

Thanks for the video Sundas! I still struggle to know what data science role I want to do. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on picking direction when you don't yet have experience. There's a big gap between the skills I have now and some of the positions I am interested, but I'm hoping that I can still move around in the field as I learn more. My data science journey started last year during the pandemic when I was locked out of my PhD lab and needed to do something productive. My process so far 1. Data Science in R series from Harvard on Edx 2. Reading practical statistics for data science with a bookclub 3. Python programming course Pre4. Learned some linear algebra, calculus 4a. ML course 4b. Data science fellowship with DS4A Now. Learning SQL online! Always. Engage in DS community and attend talks to learn about various topics Next. Applied Machine learning class to do some project work and also I should finish my PhD this semester!!

Hi, David¡ I am an accountant in a similar situation. I have worked for 15 years as an internal auditor and eventually ended up focusing on data modeling by pulling data from SAP ERP. I think our experience is a good approach. Right now, I'm noticing there are posts for data analyst auditor positions, which means there are now members of the audit team who are only focused on producing data models for the rest of the team. In my case it is a good opportunity to take advantage of my experience and apply it to Data analytics. Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope my comment helps you.

Hi Sundas! I have a career in auditing and over time I ended up focusing on producing data models by pulling data from SAP ERP. These days, this work is often done by data analysts. It requires knowing the data base and handling analytics tools (SQL, Script, Python, etc ...) I am learning Python and I am preparing for the CAP (Certified Analytical Professional) certification, to learn the methodology and accredit my qualification. After listening to you I think I should prioritize statistics. With my experience I think that I should orient myself towards business data analytics. Thanks for the info.

Data Science/Machine Learning/Data Engineering/Data Analyst roles are incredibly overhyped and actually are not very rewarding. The competition is insane and getting a job takes almost 18 months of grinding to break into the industry. Plus you need a masters in Data Science to actually be considered for most roles. To add on top of that, there are insanely long hours and crazy work pressure, but relatively low pay in these fields,, You must choose your field smartly for the future - Java and Cybersecurity roles along with, network engineer, VLSI, and networking roles are always hiring. So are, product management, Salesforce, and PPM type of roles. Core fields are great but they just aren't that much in demand. Always choose IT or CS or Electrical/Networking and learn to code in Java or Javascript. You are pretty much guaranteed to get a high-paying job.

I am so overwhelmed with the thought of maths, as I am from a non CS background. Could you suggest the essential topics in Maths that I should focus on?

Start easy... Learn what a vector is, how to add and multiply matrices... Probability and stats are important but you can start without them. However linear algebra is something that is needed... For that mather you only need small subset of linear algebra and it is more important to learn how to implement adding or multiplying matrices in python them to learn some distant and obscure things from it.

Sundas states in this video that she would learn concepts before any coding. Learn at the theoretical level or at least close to it. Mathematical Statistics: If you want to parallel a college course use textbooks- college courses typically follow a textbook as a guide. Book: Mathematical Statistics by Larsen and Marx Videos: MIT open courseware (choose a probability and statistics class) Linear Algebra: Khan Academy and MIT open course ware are my favorite resources for this. When you are done, learn to implement Matrices in R and Python. Learn to Program, I recommend R because it's easier to implement Statistics right away. This is just to reinforce Statistics concepts. Do a Statistics path on datacamp. You are still learning statistics here. Then Start Python. DataCamp is a good place for all things datascience. Supplement that with the math I mentioned before.

Hey Khalid, I'm 16 years old and interested in learning data science. Can I learn data science the way you said and start freelancing instead of interviewing? (Which I probably can't right now). So that I can improve the data science knowledge and also be good at it even more.

Would you get a master's in it? Does a master's make up or replace that experience required for so-called "entry-level" jobs?
