Started in film with no post processing, just basic develop. On switching to digital I use Raw shooter and photoshop, switched again to LR once they bought out rawshooter. Still happy with LR
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Mark, I would appreciate your showing more C1 tips as you normally show post processing steps in LR. But anyway, thanks for the valueable tips and keep up with the good work!
Interesting (and timely) vid. By coincidence, the June update of LR includes many/most of the features you seem to like most about Capture One, including the equivalent of an opacity slider for masks and presets, as well as better approaches to intersecting masks, customizing presets, etc. Nothing like a bit of competition to drive progress, benefiting us all!
Great video Mark! I started with Lightroom but switched to Capture One about two years ago. I'm aware that Lr has made some improvements recently, but C1 is so much more flexible and once you become comfortable with it, easier to use. It also doesn't lag like Lr does (or did the last time I used it). Please keep the C1 videos coming.
Great video, very clear explanation of Capture One and how t use the different adjustment tools. Your video is probably one the best I have seen on RU-vid for Capture One. Please continue creating them. Thanks. JP
I started using Capture One Pro in late November 2021. At first, I just didn't get it. But I kept going back and giving it another go. Over the past six months, I have changed my entire workflow from Lr/Ps to Capture One Pro. I feel like I get better results with less work, but without compromising my ability to really get creative. I still use Photoshop and Adobe Camera RAW occasionally, but I've deleted all of my Lightroom catalogs and don't plan to use Lightroom anymore. Even more than the better RAW conversion and the flexibility of being able to apply any adjustments to any layer, I have fallen completely in love with Capture One sessions. It is great to see you using it, as well. I would absolutely love to see more videos from you about how you are using Capture One Pro.
How great that you put this video out today. Just yesterday I looked at my computer to see if I had a good platform for an editing program. How about that. Just as I really NEEDED direction, you provided it. I'm heading over to see about getting started.! PERFECT.
Thanks for this video!I am actually using ON1 FW and based on your video, it seems to have all the features C1 is offering (except the customising of the interface). However I am very tempted to step over to Capture 1 , as I heard many positives about it and the quality of the demosaicing process.A great addition would be an intro video on the organising and cataloguing (sessions).
I watched this with interest Mark and its a great walkthrough of your workflow, but looking at the pricing of Capture One I wouldn't be tempted away from The Adobe Photography Plan, also, I`ve spent years learning LRC, buying books on it etc it would be a massive culture shock and learning experience to go over to another piece of software now. Great video though as usual Mark, I do love your easy way of presenting things.
Capture One is actually a license purchase unlike Adobe that is subscription based. If you pay Adobe's subscription year after year, you actually end up paying more for Adobe than Capture One.
@@Henry_Churches Yep I realise that now, BUT unfortunately over the years I've spent hundreds of hours watching YT videos on LCR and PS and bought numerous books on both, and bought countless magazines on both, trying to learn these programs that now I’m so far into the infrastructure of these programs it would be a big step to now go to something like Capture One. I do have free NX Studio I could move to as a Nikon shooter, or buy Affinity Photo for £49 or use one of the many free processing software’s out there, BUT I’ve still not discovered a program like LCR for its cataloguing qualities, otherwise I might have left Adobe by now.
I don't get to go out and shoot a lot so I've never felt like it was worth me paying for a subscription to any photo editing software. Several years ago I bought my first software from a company who shall remain unnamed for a one time and very reasonable price. It has worked well enough, or so I thought, although I was always putting up with some glitches. Finally, the other day I became totally fed up. I am now three days into a thirty day trial of Capture One and even though I'm learning it from the ground up I can say that there's no way I won't subscribe. I actually knew it within the first couple of hours. It's vastly superior. And yes, I would like to see more detailed videos on Capture One. Thanks for the video. It showed me several things I hadn't discovered yet and basically sold me on it even more.
I love Capture One. My favourite feature is being able to customise and save your workspace. I have one for editing my commercial work, a workspace for when I’m tethering and another for quick speed edits Brilliant
Fantastic video. Love your style. Easy going, no nosense. I'm new to CO and Fuji. Mostly birds and wildlfie. Some landscape. Having a blast. One question. When I create a mask it stays red even after I finish my edit when viewing. How do I stop that? Thanks and keep the videos coming.
Very interesting. Lightroom Classic has made huge improvements in the last year or so (IMHO) and your videos have been great to help with the learning curve. Just getting comfortable and happy with my LR workflow - what is the compelling reason to switch to C1 for a non-professional?
Hey Jim! For me Lightroom seems to have some constraints that Capture One doesn’t like the ability to apply any editing tool to gradient and radial filters. LR only allows certain editing tools to be applied where C1 doesn’t hold any back. Plus and perhaps most importantly I find C1 to be better when it comes to converting RAW files.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto I had the same question as Jim but the bit that caught my attention is that C1 lets you apply all available adjustments to filters. However, I think it is called Capture One Pro for a reason; the advanced features relative to LRC are reflected in the price point and the program is more suited to professionals or more dedicated amateurs than me. Great informative video as always. Thank you
@@RandyPollock Hey Randy. Thanks for the feedback on this. I also use Fuji (X not GFX) so that is another consideration. I think I will try the 30 day trial and check it out. Thanks again.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Hey Mark. Really appreciate the feedback. Just got back from the Grand Canyon with a lot of photos to go through. Think I will get the 30 day trial of C1 and use it to work on these. Thanks again.
Amazing video of explaining your capture one editing flow. I am capture one user for two years now and enjoying it very much but could use some more refinement. Perfect video for me! I learned a very good amount of new & useful techniques that I will definitely try out in my editing. Thanks Mark!
Great video Mark. With the addition of layers does the file size increase much? Also for exporting j-pegs do you have to merge layers or anything? Thanks
All adjustments are kept in C1's database, the RAW file will not be affected. In fact, C1 never modifies the original files. When you export an image all adjustments are applied to the resulting jpg (or whatever format you use for export). No need to merge layers.
Thank you for such an awesome video Mark, I really like all the features you pointed out that other software doesn't seem to have! This is the first time I'm learning about Capture One and I'm already interested. I was wondering though, would you consider this to be a replacement for LR?
I switched to Capture One from Lightroom about a year ago and I love it. I was excited to learn some new tricks in your video, but I've discovered that if a style or preset contains settings that can't be applied to a layer (such as vignette or noise reduction), then that style or present can't be applied to a layer. Or more specifically, C1 will offer to apply partial settings to a layer, but that messes with the overall creative intention of the preset. If there's a workaround for this I'd love to know about it!
I will be installing Capture One Pro on my laptop and desk top and I'm glad you made this video because I'm a beginner hobbiest and need all the help I can get so I can start to use the program to tether and edit my photos Thank You and Happy 2024 ( today is Jan 1 2024).
Great video as always Mark! I haven't really gotten into editing much yet, but I'm wondering about the limitations of Capture One. Can you do focus stacking in Capture One? What other things might be missing that Photoshop or Lightroom can provide? I'd really like to learn a program that will benefit me the most, and also keep costs down instead of having to have multiple programs. Thanks for any help you can provide.
If your going to be serious about focus stacking like in macro photography, you need a dedicated program like Helicon for large number of photos to stack. I haven’t used C1 but would think if your talking of focus stacking or exposure blending landscape photos, I would imagine it would even if you had to do layers. Maybe Mark or someone could clarify my guess. C1 will probably list it’s features on their web page.
Thank you for your videos Mark. Do you know if the coupon is still valid or know if C1 offers other discounts at certain times of the year. Specifically on their perpetual license.
One thing that may need to be address/corrected in the video is that CaptureOne still seems to have a limit of the number of layers you can create per image, which I believe is capped at 16 layers, which is a lot until you start doing a lot of stuff to an image. For example, just playing around in the latest version of C1, if you use different style brushes, each one will consume a layer, as will doing things like clone/spot healing (although you can usually do most cloning/spot healing on a single layer now that C1 supports defining source points for healing purposes). I still find this to be a bit of a limitation over Lightroom which allows you to have (as far as I can tell) as many local adjustment points as you want (obviously, the more you have, it may impact speed of the program, but you're not quite as limited as you are with CaptureOne. This is one thing I never quite understood about C1. I mean if they made it so you could have, say 50 or 100 layers, then I think that would be sufficient, but for heavy editing, I can see a person easily reach the 16 layer max pretty quickly especially if you're doing a lot of localized adjustments and masking.
I sure this was On1Raw, I am an older photographer and enjoy having a written tutorial to learn by. watching is great but for me a little lost. I learn about camera techniques from and others and it is great. Whether a darkroom or computer direct instruction is best for me. As always I have enjoyed your video. Thanks
I am just about to invest in a post production package. And daunted by the choice and their complexity. This was a brilliant overview and very helpful. Thank you.
Enjoyed your energy level......that slider is definitely on the far righthand side. I have a concern as I watch several of the "younger" youtubers that there is definitely a shifting away from "making a photo" in the field (e.g. highlighting the bridge) to taking a photo and "making it" in post processing. Photoghrahy appears to be the only art (versus painting, sculpting, writing, etc.) where you can post your original product and then artifically through technology, make it better.......perhaps. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Thxs.
OK C1 is a cool, stand-alone app - but to my mind it can only replace a portion of my workflow. To really entice me away from Adobe's offerings a smart company would need to develop a competitively priced, non subscription, integrated suite of software that also has DAM (Digital Asset Management) capabilities like the LrC Library Module, and also a pixel based PSlike editor to fall back on if the C1 edits weren't enough. If my wish list is already out there in software land, please let me know - I have my credit card ready.
Please make more of these. Changed 3 years ago to C1 and have looked at LR once a year since, but will stay with C1. Best RAW converter in the market and in my opinion there is no need to use Photoshop to get good results. C1 is for editing photos and Photoshop is for manipulating photos.
Hi Mark, the good news is Capture One is launching for iPad Pro by tomorrow which would be perfect as a huge improvement for next step I think. However, as I see always you are editing your photos on MacBook or iMac and I am wondering if you are satisfied to use Apple display which cannot be calibrated as well as Enzo or Benq monitors for best accuracy for printing!?
Greetings Mark. Although I came to this party late (haven't been around RU-vid for a few days) the timing of this video is spot on. I've been considering a software change/improvement. I'm a DXO Photolab user for years and have been happy with it along with Helicon Focus and Aurora HDR as stand-alones. DXO has been known for two things: Top-of-the -line RAW conversions and high ISO noise reduction. Reviewers of Capture One say the RAW conversion is even better, but not the noise reduction. I rarely shoot above ISO 400 so between that and your highly informative video, I think I'll make the switch. Plus Capture one has brand-specific software that's less expensive and perfect for my Nikons. So, yes, I would be interested in more videos on Capture One! Thanks!
This has been so helpful. I’ve been using C1 for a while but never felt comfortable with it or figured out a flow. I’m going to use this setup as a base (because I think very similarly) and adjust from there. Very helpful indeed. I would love to see more tips and tricks about C1 editing. Thanks.
Great video. I’ve thought about switching in the past but this motivates me to try it. Can you make a video on how you do file management using capture one? I’ve always thought that Lightroom is a little kludgy. Thanks!
Mark, thanks for the great video. What does your printing workflow look like? I’m still using LRC print module, so was wondering what’s typical for C1 users.
Thanks for this video Mark. I started with Lightroom 1.1 back in the mid-late zeroes and in 2015 I turned to Capture One Pro, version 7 back then. I just love Capture One, but I must admit that the learning curve is steep when you got a lot of Lightroom Muscle Memory :-D. I would love to see more Capture One related stuff here ....
New to editing and learning it all so much from YT. I have used affinity before and using LR now. Is this program a much more easier and less complex editor then LR in your opinion to edit photos, especially for a beginner?
The biggest thing for me with Lrc is the Spot Healing and Cloning. That process constantly hangs up the mac. Is Capture One quicker and better at doing this? I'd switch just because of that. Great vid....... Thanks.
Thinking of purchasing Capture One pro 23. I’m a serious amateur with some professional experience. I have used PS elements 8 for years. However just purchased the MAC book pro m1 (2021). Do you think Capture One pro is a good choice to start out with.
Great video and yes I would like more Capture One videos. Post-processing is my nemesis. I avoid it at all costs, so I will take you up on the offer of Capture One and see if I can get past my post-processing issues. Question: Do you use one primary device for editing?
I have too much time and effort invested in LR and Photoshop to switch. Plus, the pricing is a bit better. I will just focus on your landscape tutorials, which I find very helpful and informative. Thank you for all the information you present
Great video Mark! Do you use luminosity masks in Capture One too? I'd also really like to know what final adjustments you make to an image prior to exporting for printing? Thanks!
Great to hear you enjoyed it John! Yes I use the Luma Range features in C1. Based off the feedback in this video, I’ll be adding in some C1 videos into the mix as well!
Great video. I’ve thought about switching to C1 because I’m a Fuji user, but I’m hesitant to start over from LR. Do you do a C1 series from start to finish or is there one you recommend? An easy one to begin? I’m older! Do you use C1 to catalog your images, if not, why not, and what do you use? Thanks!
I really enjoyed this video so much ! I’m a Capture One user and also doing landscape photography. Please ! Make more of this helpful video on CO! Something I would like to see is how you apply (or play with) your colours inside CO. Thanks !!
Informative video Mark! Very much appreciated. I’ve used Capture One in the past but I don’t like how the importing of photos is done - I’m likely doing it wrong! But that one process is what keeps me from leaving Lightroom / Photoshop. I know… it’s stupid but familiarity is a big thing with me! I’ve been using Adobe products since 1984 and Lightroom since it’s first release. As a retired Creative Director I now want ease of use with high quality processing tools. Thanks for the videos!
Does Capture One have a channel mixer feature for swapping red/blue color channels (used for post processing Infrared images)? Secondly, would you ever be interested in doing a video on Infrared landscape photography? I have a Canon 40D which has been converted to an IR camera and really love the creative possibilities for my landscape photography and would love to see what you could do with that type of photography. Love your videos btw, I watch every week.
Great video Mark. I’m a C1 user as well. However, I seem to find myself in a situation that I can’t completely get rid of Photoshop. Do you still need Photoshop after C1? If yes, what are those use cases? Thanks in advance!
ok I see you're using lightroom and now capture one. I have one question for you, is Capture One also like a catalog software like it is Lightroom or is it just like Photoshop style kind of software? I use Lightroom since version 2 (yes version 2, a long time ago) and I loved the "catalog" system right away. I don't wanna lose that but I do wanna try Capture One to try to understand if I can do more with Capture One than with Lightroom. Please let me know
I have really grown used to LR's automask for subject and sky as it saves me a ton of time, does C1 have something similar to that? Thanks and great video!!
Started looking for a better editing platform today, so this is perfect timing, please do more on the features of C1, would like to know what composition grid options it has in crop, eg rule of thirds etc.
If you don’t mind me replying, I would recommend you check out the CaptureOne channel for their very helpful editing tutorial videos or the channel of Paul Reiffer!
Very interesting vid, Mark, but I have to go with Steve Jarvis's comment to the effect that just when I've have some grip on LRC along comes another option. Ahh, the tyranny of choice !! But I appreciate that you as a professional must keep up to date.
Best RAW files with C1, especially for Fuji. Then Levels, Magic Brush & Layers, Versatility, etc. LR is far behind… And iPad version for first editing on the go will be released end of June: Game changer when Layers will be included.
What nobody is talking about is that you can buy Capture One, from my understanding, and update as you choose when an update is available. LR is only a subscription. I just want to buy it, even if it's more $$$.
Thanks Mark! Great content as usual. So glad you don’t edit out your oopsie moments as they just add personality to your vids! While I’ve tried out and purchased almost every other editing app in the past and had settled on Affinity Photo, Exposure and the Nik collection I have to say C1 looks interesting. Mostly I like that your videos, while specific in content, are generic enough that I can use your tips in the apps I do use. Who knows - maybe C1 might be in my future too 😂
Have you abandoned Lightroom? How is Capture One for painted and auto Mask generation - sky and edge detection, in particular? How is it for External Plug-ins, like Topaz and Photoshop? How about file organization? Given a Lightroom Catalog with edits for 10k-20k files, with import presets, and file organization, how would you migrate to Capture One? I’d like to see Capture One fund a lot more videos. 😉
@@MarkDenneyPhoto I am a hobbyist in an environment where I may be able to use my images to make small turnover....I have been advised to watermark any items placed as a portfolio on social nedia....how would you go about that in Capture One...or would we need additional software to do this. Thanks forbtour consideration here
Thanks Mark - I will do some research on it. Pretty settled in with ON1 Photo Raw now but C1 does look very intuitive and straightforward. Like that narrowing customization aspect for sure!! Have to review "transfer" of data, catalogue, albums, etc. Maybe a video on that when time permits. TKS.
In '14 when Sony came out C1 was just $30 with a Sony A7, r ,s when Ps and Lr each were $800 and each full update again the same and if like a Canon user you were left with Canon's editing software. If you did night shots and followed the advice of others and not use NR you would get hot and dead pixels But when using C1 they were not there, How do not know but still that way and Lr still does not rid dead or hot pixels as well as many AI noise reducers. Also not all lenses had profiles even Lr was slow to get exp the favorite for Astro Milky Way was the low cost Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f/2.8 but it had terrible mustache and star trailing in corners C1 still does not have a profile and even Lr still has trailing stars BUT C1 has a way to make a lens profile and dust removal and color corrector all at the same time using one of two sizes white plastic square pieces, all you do is hold it in front of the lens at the time and place (for color correction) then use that image in a compare with the image that needs correction, it worked for a year before Lr had it. Also in '14 and '15 Sony had few lenses so using the C1 LP you had a file for all old Film FD lenses like at 24mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2. Also sensor cleaning was not a thing to do and only noticed maybe at f/11 when bad so a big help in post. It was and is a pro sw and a learning curve to say the least but with advances of today is like a super Lr.
Good day, yes I would appreciate a more detailed use of capture one. If you do so, please do it in smaller, detailed digestible segments. Enjoy the channel and keep it coming. Thanks, G 😊
Is there a video out there on creating custom ICC profiles and version 23? I used to be able to create an ICC profile and bring it into C1, but that process doesn't work anymore in version 23.
Looks intuitive and feature packed. I have 2 questions. Does it have cloud saves and does it work well with printers? I have a Pixma 100s for up to A3 standard prints connected to my Mac.
I've heard about Capture One but never delved into it as a potential substitute for LR/PS. Your video opened a new dimension for me and would love to see more videos regarding it. In the meantime, I'm going to read more about it. I've recently switched camera system from Canon to Fujifilm. So lots to learn. I love your video style!
I have a canon and a Fuji and a lot seem to use capture one for Fuji. I only have free Lightroom and free canon software but am a beginner with editing but love the look of capture one.
I still use LR mainly for videos are it’s the platform most folks use and can relate too, but based off the feedback on this video I’ll probably add in a bit of C1 as well. I use C1 for RAW import and most of the heavy lifting and then usually finish things off in PS.
CapterOne is so musch faster, easy and logic than LR. PLEASE do more videos on Capture One!! I have used CO before but left it for LR iPad app. But now I have switcht over to CO again becuse CO is so much better.
Mark it's very informative video but I found bit difficult with capture one. I am lightroom user capture one has great tool like level tool. But again you nail it simple way of teaching after watching tutorial first thought came to my mind can I do this. I love your style ❤️Thank you 😊 🙏
Interesting video. I guess you are a convert which is interesting as I assume most of your audience are Lightroom users. I have used Capture One since version 6 and although I have LrC 6 the last time I used it seriously was version 4. My photo club wanted me to put together a course on post processing but wanted to use LrC. I have been using it for a week or so. I don't mind the library module and that seems on par, possibly better, than C1. The editing and export modules though are inferior IMO. It's still early days on editing but I just prefer how C1 implements its layers vs adjustments. I don't fully understand which masking functions are better however it seems a bit convoluted in LrC, perhaps I just need to understand the program better. What is has confirmed though is there is no way I am going back to Lightroom.
Thanks for checking out the video Mark - great to hear you enjoyed it! I still make videos using LR however as that’s what most folks still use, but when I switched to Fuji a few years ago - that was when I started using C1👍
Not sure I would go with capture one if I were going to change from Lightroom. I really don’t care for the interface or the way tools are grouped. I have been playing with ON1 and Affinity Photo, the latter being similar to Photoshop. ON1 eliminated the need for a catalog and the interface is very comprehensive.
@@RandyPollock It’s not that simple when you consider cataloging and DAM. depending on whether or not you implemented sidecar files, it could be a lot of work to switch software.
Mark, I've got a couple catalogues in Lightroom, one for personal and one for a magazine I work with. What is involved in moving everything to Capture One?
Can you not just export the edited images? I’m asking because I have some photos in Lightroom but not all of them and I’m looking for a solution to edit and organize my tens of thousands of photos.
Does C1 allow you to create layer mask like in PS? I make the majority of my income in real estate and architectural photography almost always using multiple images to create one (not HDR blending). I do my basic edits in LR and then move the files to PS where I create layer mask and luminosity mask and C1 would be useless for me if it is not able to do the same.
