I really needed this tutorial at this time 🙂 Thank you 🙂 I am creating a course and this is a much better way of presenting my writing notes and speaking to the camera. This is a massive help and solution for me 🙂
🎯⚡💪🏽Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. 05:07 Don't know about iPad, but if your tablet screen records sound as well: 1. turn screen record on with sound...then turn on the camera. 2. While both are on, make a loud noise or clap before you start talking. This will cause a spike in the recording's "audio visual". 3. Use the spike in the audio visuals on both the screen recording and talking head to sync them in your editor. 4. Turn off, delete, or turn down the audio for the tablet/iPad recording in your editor. Do this (2 - 4) for every segment of the video you will be using.
One always learns something new everyday! Thank you for this wonderful and informative video! Hope to see you next week with another one of these bangers! 💙
If you record the audio n the iPad well, you will find it easier to match up the two clips. It’s easier to line up the clips by looking at the audio spikes.
Your video literally saved my bachelor thesis product. I was planning to incorporate this style of drawing in my video, but it just would not work in premiere. Then I was notified about your upload, watched it, downloaded the Final Cut Trial and spent the night editing everything in Final Cut. The results were perfect! Thank you so much!
First of all: Yes, Premiere also had additive blend modes, although they are names differently (linear dodge). Secondly, have you tried doing this in Premiere with an iPad recording? The problem is not the blend mode, the problem is due to some color space mismatch that happens. There are lots of articles about it and no easy fix. Black on the iPad recordings will have a purple tint. Therefore, the blend mode will not 100% work.
@@LukeBares oh cause premiere is bad at handling variable frame-rates, the screen records on apple devices using the native screen recorder are not recorded using fixed frame rates, i normally run them through the adobe media encoder first or handbrake if you prefer that, then use it in premiere
Great vid. Little Editing tip for Samuel. Once you put the screen recording above the primary timeline, highlight it and hit Command+G, which will make it a secondary timeline. This will make it just like the magnetic timeline so you don't have to cut, drag etc. Just blade and delete and the gaps will fill automatically 👍
Wow, Samuel! I just did it on my iPad Pro using iMovie app and it worked! - screen shot my note taking using the black template - added the video on my existing video as CUTAWAY - highlighted the video (note taking) and then clicked OVERLAYS then I added volume on STRENGTH and voila! It worked just like how you present it!
Great video! I have two tips to further improve your workstream: 1. Screen record your iPad with Mic on (long press record button to activate). This allows you in Final Cut Pro to sync the two clips perfectly. 2. When you change the blend mode to Add, simply change the Opacity below in order to bring back the black background. This will save you time by adding the extra screenshot. You are welcome ;) Tom
Can this be done if the editing software has no blend mode as well? Would it work by placing the ipad recording and simply changing the opacity? Wouldn't that also dim out the text, though?
For the Premiere Pro brothers out here, Premiere is kinda bad at handling variable frame rates so it’ll look glitchy, and with artifacts while the screen recording on apple native screen recorders are not recorded in fixed/constant frame rates, you can use the Media Encoder or handbrake to convert it into fixed/constant frame rate then use it, which is normally how i do it. Hope it helps out the other Premiere Bros here!
Thanks for this. Any tips for using Premiere Rush on iPad Pro? Just started playing around with it & hoping i can use it … or another app you’d recommend on iPad? Gratitude.
Thank you so much for making these videos, Samuel! It’s amazing to get a glimpse into your creative process! I love your eye for the little things, I would really love to see more of this! Something like the process of designing a presentation would be great, or even how you plan a video! Keep up the phenomenal work, its always super inspiring :)
hello .. I need ipad pro ..do you know any one give it for free actually I dont have money to buy it but I need it because it will help me in my medical study...thank you all
Hey man that was really amazing if you planning to do such videos more often than i would request you to make a video about how you add normal texts in the video like you did in 5:31 also how did you zoom in, in the FCP screen recording, how to do transition between two shots, how to keep the audio seperate from video , etc 🤘🏻
Nice tutorial. One suggestion - instead of a screenshot of a black image, you could also use an adjustment layer (google to download) and add gausian blur and a color board (reduce highlights). This adjustmeant layer takes up less space on the timeline (looks the same as a title effect), and is much more customizable.
Samuel, sorry for the question not on the topic of the video but do you use(did you use) A3 portrait paper in Goodnotes?Crucial to know, would be happy to get your reply
This is awesome! Can't wait to try it. Seem like it would also work if you use a green background and then use the keying effect in FCP to remove the background?
Oooooh thank you so much for this! I have always struggled with how to add visual elements to my videos to illustrate certain concepts. This is amazing and it helps answer so many questions.
This is great. Black paper is a must have, but, for anyone that wants to use white paper, it should still work the same exact way, except, instead of pressing "add" for the blend mode, do "multiply" The reason this works is because a black pixel is basically "0" and anything + 0 is the original number (so the pixels underneath-your facecam, in this situation-remain the same where there's black) A white pixel is basically "1" and anything times 1 is the original number if you want to draw in black instead of white over your video, this is how you would go about that Again though, black paper is the best paper, lol
Great video. Nice work! If you enable recording audio on the iPad through its built in mic, FCP will sync the clips for you based on the audio. Aligning them manually is pretty easy, but it’s even easier if you just select the two clips and create a synchronized clip using audio to sync. Best regards!
Oh wow, this will definitely come in handy. I tried this on my phone. Using inshot app and the sketchbook app. Understanding the blending options, help me achieve this. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for the awesome tutorial and information! This is such a simple, production-lite way to add illustrative graphics without lots of post-production.
Hi Samuel. New subscriber here! ❤️ I just watched your video on how to make notes and when I saw your notes I was blown away. I just want to grab your notes and use it to for my nclex study. I am more of a visual learner. If i get your notes for free that would be a huge blessing but if you have it somewhere for sAle please let me know where to find it. I understand how much effort and time you put into making those gorgeous notes of yours. Im eager to pass my nclex exam and help the sick and weak. Thank you for sharing your tips and strategies on how you made your beautiful notes. You helped a lot of people including me. 😊🤩💕💕💕👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️
How can this be done on pre-recorded video? Draw while while editing & before sharing w/ others, say, like w/ how I do my advanced scouting reports & film breakdowns for a well-known college athletics dept's football program (no,NOT Michigan. Not now, anyway 😂)... I don't usually prefer FCP for my ipadm4 due to time constraints, so I just use the screen record function but I want more options & a professional look w/o sacrificing too much speed & flexibility... I love video Pencil and have bounced ideas back & forth with Michael since he began, but truthfully, between the time zone difference & my initial email problems, I wasn't close to the help I wanted to be... Any ideas?
Maybe you can make a video about project management. With my friends I want to do something more for our society (in Poland). Last year we created podcasts. I'm the project leader and your advices will be very helpful.
Excellent Video !! - But 'Lazy' of you - you could have just said 'ADD' - then edited the 'Audio'... @5:55 ( Why not spend the time - to make something that is so good - to Perfect ) - instead of 'Sticky Tape' a Quick Fix over the Mona Lisa... ? Anyway - Great Video... I'm thinking of copying this video - but doing it with Davinci Resolve. to give people a 'Free' option.
For people on a budget (for free): Krita PNG files with no background + for better results drawing tablet 50 bucks like Xp-pen Phone Camera (same) Davinci Resolve
Awesome thanks. I was just wondering if you have any ideas how to use the drawing and talking idea for live chats. I'm thinking in terms of online tutoring where you spend time with a student and have no idea what problems they might want to discuss and yet be able to communicate on the screen with your student. This isn't about creating videos of course just increasing my ability to communicate visually to explain something on the screen in real time using my ipad and apple pencil along with my webcam on facetime etc.
this isn't fancy and overlaying the main image, but it works for live tutoring: 1) zoom (or whatever) with your student using your laptop 2) mount a webcam above your desk pointing down at an ipad/tablet on the desk (mine is on an old mic stand I had kicking around) 3) toggle between cameras in your meeting app (in Zoom, use the ^ beside the camera icon to choose the overhead webcam or the laptop camera) depending on whether you want to show what you're doing on the ipad, or whether you want your face on camera. However, you could also just Zoom on the ipad and use the collaborative whiteboard feature?
I created intros and outros in almost the same way. I open my drawing app and have the canvas on full screen. Background white and I start a screen recording. Than I start drawing for example from the center and go round and round until the whole screen is filled with 'ink'. Than I stop de screen recording and edit the start and end to delete unwanted parts and I end up with only the recording of the white background with the ink from the middle to the outer corners. In my video editing app I upload this video and in the settings I make the used ink color transparent. That video I put on top of a real video recording and you first will see a white background and than suddenly from the middle you will see the video playing. You can make your own intros/outros just by creating other screen recordings. For example on a white bg you start from the top left corner and draw to the right top corner. Than go a bit lower and you go from right to left, from left to right and so on until the screen is fully inked. It's great fun to use special brushes with great effects. Your fantasy is the limit 👍
Thanks for Share ! This is too much simple write on black paper and use opencv to make aplha channel to black pixel and then make gaussian blur of same size on top of that black paper after and after put anywhere you want to put ot add aduion in video use pydub or ffpeg or sound .. This for Python Developers Only
Samuel, have you tried the Muse app? I thought of your videos instantly when I started using it. It’s an endless whiteboard that supports a bunch of different rich text. Totally seems like something you’d enjoy!
I love Samuels videos! He makes learning exciting. Does anyone know what type of lighting he is using? I like how it illuminates him but keeps the background dark.
You are very nice guy. When I saw your video about "own your Learning' for first time, it astonished me. Your facial look like an Islamic boy. I pray that Allah bless you with His guidance and you will accept Islam.(Ameen)
Nice content and nice topic. I am also thinking about this idea. I quickly watched the video to get the overal idea. I didnt listen the whole script. It is an old content but if you are still receptive to new ideas why not put a glass between you and camera and write directly on the glasses then mirror the image to make it readable by followers. Make the image inside of the edge of the glasses for "writing on the air" illusion. Put the light between you and glasses not between the glasses and camera to avoid reflection. And use a microphone not to make the glasses block your voice. you might orient one light from the top to the handwriting just to make your hand writing more visible and clear.
I tried to do something like this in Camtasia. I screen-recorded on my iPad in Good Notes using a black background with a white pen. But when I remove the black bg colour using the colour picker, the white is also removed along with the black.
This is great!! I'm assuming that you use a similar technique when you do graphics on top of your videos as you did in your "How I Study and Learn - My Digital Note Taking Process (feat. Notion)"? I guess you would use Keynotes for the graphics or words? A tutorial on that kind of overlay would be great too! Thank you so much for what you do honestly!!
Thank you. So useful. Since I’m fairly new to videography and editing, can I use pre recorded and pre edited video. Play my video back to myself on my iMac while I record a new iPad screen record and draw my content, then follow your steps. Only because I feel I would trip over my words while I’m drawing and writing.
Nice video.. I also want to record some videos for my students.. I have ipad and windows laptop. So which editing software should I use to get this blend feature. Thanks
I have a iPhone Max 13 and I do NOT have the ICON like you describe to do the screen recording, my question is HOW do we install the app to get that icon.
Hi Samuel, A Big fan bro. A request from me is that may be u can provide the music used in the video making in the discription because as you know some of the viewers are get attracted to the background music as like me. Towards the end can i think that you can rectify in the upcoming videos !!??
Cool but think it maybe better if you were not centred in the frame but were offset and to the right, then do the illustrations on the left, for dramatic effect you could occasionally point to parts of the illustration. So you could remain better lighted and making sure the left of the screen was dark and moody in preparation for the overlay. Just a thought.
